Rising Star awards are supported in part by the Theatre Artist Project through The Greater Cincinnati Foundation.

Dr. Sandy Osher
A Cincinnati OB/GYN, when Dr Sandy Osher is not traveling the world teaching surgeries he helped pioneer, he can be found in theaters across the city. Sandy has been a part of the Rising Stars program from the beginning 7 years ago. “I’m new to all this!” he says with his infectious grin and bubbling with enthusiasm. On his theatrical experience he says with typical humility and good humor: “I acted……poorly, in Mrs. Shreive’s 4th grade drama class and am JUST recovering from the trauma!” which might explain his appreciation for the talent and work these young rising stars do. At a recent LCT gathering at Red Tree Gallery, Sandy was honored by the League for his contributions to the Rising Stars. “No one I know is more committed to our young professionals than Dr. Osher. His enduring support and enthusiastic advocacy for the new guard of professionals is unbounded!” –Cathy Springfield, LCT President

There are 5 Rising Stars this year; typically 3 are awarded. (Sandy is a persuasive committee member and advocate!) “These young professionals have provided the region with exceptional work and will enrich the craft of theatre for many years to come. We applaud them all and will look forward to following their bright and promising careers!” —Sandy Osher, Honorary Producer for The Rising Star Awards.

Centers Earns LCT Award for RAPUNZEL! RAPUNZEL!

David A. Centers Earns a League of Cincinnati Theatres Award for Children’s Theatre Production of RAPUNZEL! RAPUNZEL!

(CINCINNATI, MARCH 27, 2012)– David A. Centers, scenic designer for The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati, has been recognized with a League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) Award for the company’s production of RAPUNZEL! RAPUNZEL! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale. Centers received an LCT Award in the same category earlier this year for his work on the company’s production of Disney’s MY SON PINOCCHIO JR.

Centers scenic design for the show was described as “simple and very well executed in a style that was great for the play.” In addition to the show’s signature tower, the set also boasts a forest that “wasn’t too dank, dark and dismal, but instead had personality.”

RAPUNZEL! RAPUNZEL! is a world premiere musical that offers numerous new twists on the classic fairy tale thanks to its playwrights/composers, the local team of Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman. Still front and center is a beautiful princess with extra long hair, locked by the evil Lady Zaza in a tower guarded by a 17-foot dragon. Lady Zaza aims to keep Rapunzel from her rightful place as ruler of the kingdom, until the arrival of a handsome suitor who’s not entirely certain for what he’s searching.

Performances for RAPUNZEL! RAPUNZEL! continue through March 31. Ticket information is available at www.thechildrenstheatre.com.

TIGERS BE STILL Earns LCT Award for Sound Design

Vincent Olivieri Earns League of Cincinnati Theatres Award for Sound Design in Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s TIGERS BE STILL

(CINCINNATI, MARCH 27, 2012)– Vincent Olivieri, sound designer for the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s production of TIGERS BE STILL, has earned a League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) Award for his work. According to LCT panelists, “Olivieri set the tone, mood and memory through a deft and specific soundscape.”

Written by Kim Rosenstock, TIGERS BE STILL is billed by the Playhouse as a darkly funny and moving new comedy about a young woman juggling the excitement of her first job with even bigger challenges at home: a depressed mother who won’t get out of bed and a sister who won’t get off the couch.

Panelists described Olivieri’s sound design as key to the show’s success. “On a very small stage, scenes took place in a school gym, drugstore, office, closet, outdoors and in the living spaces of two houses. Except for the main set, capturing the essence of these scenes was limited to a couple of props and pieces of furniture — and the sound!,” said one LCT panelist. “The sound effects were so believable that I was in that school gym with the scratchy microphone, in that store with the scanner, watching the movie with the characters — and I knew there were dogs behind that basement door. Bravo.”

Olivieri also created the sound design for TIGERS BE STILL director Rob Ruggiero’s previous productions of HIGH and LAST TRAIN TO NIBROC at the Playhouse. Locally, he’s additionally worked frequently at Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati.

TIGERS BE STILL continues through April 15. Ticket information is available at www.cincyplay.com.

(CINCINNATI, MARCH 22, 2012)– Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati’s (ETC) production of Donald Margulies’ Tony-nominated play TIME STANDS STILL has earned four awards from the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) for its design and acting ensemble, as well as an award for local premiere of a new work. The timely drama explores the relationship between a photojournalist and her foreign correspondent partner as they adjust to the realities of life outside the war zone.

The cast of four — which includes Bruce Cromer, Buz Davis, Mallory Hawks and Jen Johansen — earned an ensemble award for the character-centered play. One LCT panelist praised the “remarkably nuanced and spot-on performances from one of the best ensembles this season at ETC.” Indianapolis-based actress Jen Johansen additionally was singled out with an award for leading actress in a play for her portrayal of Sarah, the photographer recovering from injuries sustained during a roadside bombing in Iraq.

ETC’s resident designer Brian c. Mehring picked up his fifth LCT Award this season for the show’s set design, described as “a loft space that felt like it was actually lived in.” According to one panelist, “The detail work was unbelievable. Brian Mehring is one of Cincinnati’s most consistent set designers. What he is able to do at ETC is nothing short of brilliant.”

TIME STANDS STILL continues through April 1. Details and ticket information are available at www.cincyetc.com.

(CINCINNATI, MARCH 13, 2012)– Panelists from the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s production of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG with five awards for its ensemble, set design, musical direction and orchestrations.

MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG is directed by John Doyle, using the same actor-musician technique he employed in the Playhouse’s Tony Award-winning production of Company. The show, a musical fable of friendship and the price of success, moves backward in time, tracing the relationships of a jaded composer and his two closest friends from their estranged ending to idealistic beginnings. The following awards were given:

  • Outstanding Ensemble, described by one LCT panelist as “full of remarkably talented individuals who could sing, move, act AND play musical instruments — extraordinary.” The cast of Broadway veterans includes Becky Ann Baker, Matt Castle, Matthew Deming, Ben Diskant, David Garry, Malcolm Gets, Lee Harrington, Daniel Jenkins, Jane Pfitsch, Leenya Rideout, Fred Rose, Bruce Sabath and Jessica Tyler Wright;
  • Becky Ann Baker, as featured actress, for her “nuanced and very real” performance as Mary Flynn;
  • Scott Paskfor his scenic design. As one panelist stated, “The use of sheet music and manuscripts, the elements that started and held together the friendship of the three main characters, was incredibly inventive”;
  • Matt Castlefor “coaxing this great vocal and instrumental performance from this cast” through his musical direction; and
  • Mary-Mitchell Campbell for her new orchestrations of the score, which “made it possible for a full sound to be derived from a group that are primarily actors and singers.”

MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG continues through March 31. Tickets are available at www.cincyplay.com.
