PINKALICIOUS THE MUSICAL presented by The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati, is recommended with a 4-Star Rating. League of Cincinnati Theatre (LCT) Panelists commended Emma Parks for her role as Pinkalicious and David A. Centers was recognized for his scenic design.

On Emma Parks’ performance, panelists noted “Pinkalicious herself was a bundle of energy and carried it throughout the show,” and “Parks as Pinkalicious was stellar– brash and loud and had a nice mix/belt to match.”

Also, “The set held surprises for the kids and got ooh’s and ah’s when the turn table revealed Pinkalicious’s bedroom, the glow in the dark cupcake dreams, and more.”

According to LCT panelists, “The play held the attention of all the little girls, moms, dads and grandmas” with a great story, “and a great message.” “Pinkalicious the Musical” is based on the popular children’s book of the same name by Victoria and Elizabeth Kahn, and tells the story of a girl who turns pink after she eats too many pink cupcakes. At first, she loves being her favorite color, but discovers that there are problems (including being mistaken for a flower and being attacked by delightfully musical bee and bluebird puppets). She resists the remedy (spoiler alert: eating green foods).

LCT recommends you bring your favorite youngster to find out if she ever returns to normal.

Limited tickets are available for the run, which continues through February 22 at the Taft Theatre. For tickets, go to their website: http://www.thechildrenstheatre.com or call 513.569.8080 ext. 10.

Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

Amy Herzog’s play, 4000 MILES, has earned 4 Stars from the panelists of the League of Cincinnati Theatres. Panelists described it as a “delightful, lovely play” intersecting “youthful tragedy with the struggles of the elderly as friends die off.”

Panelists raved, “The acting is stellar. The costumes were spot on…The set was home. It’s Herzog’s language that gives us such a ride. Double thumbs up.”

Another comment, “a beautiful little jewel …It felt as if Herzog had invaded my personal memories and stolen actual conversations I have had with my great-aunts, my grandmother. Her characters are so finely wrought that I wept with recognition… It’s fantastic across the boards.”

The panelists singled out the performance of Rosemary Prinz as Vera, stating her performance “is untouchable” and “phenomenal in her role as a 91-year old leftist in Manhattan, weaving comic charm with tragic moments in a moving, powerful manner.”

“4,000 Miles” continues through March 9 at the Shelterhouse in Cincinnati’s Playhouse in the Park. For tickets and more information go to cincyplay.com or call 513-421-3888.

Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized the College Conservatory of Music Drama Department’s Metamorphoses with a 4 Star Rating.

From a simple, rippling pool of water, Metamorphoses conjures Ovid’s myths into gorgeous theatrical imagery, provocative moments and magic. The winner of two Drama Desk Awards and one Tony Award after its Broadway run in 2002, this entrancing series of vignettes offers breathtaking storytelling and an escape from the ordinary that dares to brush with the divine.

Panelists praised Metamorphoses as “a rare, exemplary experience to behold in a theater. The pool, lighting, use of space, direction, transitions, performances and the stories–Myths of Ovid–were compelling, touching, sad, hopeful and even risky.” D. Lynn Meyers was commended for her direction: “In her hands, Ovid’s dreams “were magically realized and lushly furnished with a vision as tender as it was daring.” Dana Hall, for scenic design, and Wes Richter, for lighting design, were singled out for designs that were “beautifully evocative, integral to the story-telling, and well-executed”. Finally, the entire ensemble was lauded for their work: “Bravo to the cast who cast a spell upon this audience member.”

Metamorphoses continues through Sunday, February 9th. Tickets can be obtained at the CCM Box office, http://ccm.uc.edu/boxoffice.html

FT_Seminar

Michael Shooner and the cast of SEMINAR.

LCT Panelists have recognized the Falcon Theatre’s production of  SEMINAR with a 4 Star Rating.

SEMINAR was praised as “a delight and a high point for Falcon. They had everything moving and going in the right direction with this production.” Panelists praised the entire ensemble for making their characters “endearing and amusing”. Michael Shooner as Leonard and Ian Kramer as Martin were particularly impressive. Shooner was “outstanding as the writing seminar teacher. He is like a bull on stage, running over the student’s egos”. Kramer was “equal parts sardonic, rebellious, and naïve–he perfectly fit the part.”

SEMINAR is a tightly written character study by Theresa Rebeck, filled with biting humor, which follows four eager students as they vie for the approval of a writing professor with a reputation for being incredibly demanding.

SEMINAR continues through February 15th. Tickets can be purchased at www.falcontheater.net.

ETC’s TRIBES Earns 4.5 Star LCT Rating

Dale Dymkoski as Billy & Kelly Mengelkoch as Sylvia

Dale Dymkoski as Billy & Kelly Mengelkoch as Sylvia

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Ensemble Theatre’s production of Tribes with a 4.5 Star Rating.

Tribes centers around Billy, the deaf son of a fiercely outspoken family obsessed with self-expression. He has adapted brilliantly to his family’s unconventional ways, but they’ve never bothered to return the favor. However, when he finds a new family in the deaf community, tensions reach an all-time high in this touching play about membership in your tribe.

Panelists described Tribes as “an important play…another coup for the Ensemble theatre and I am sure people will flock to this excellent production.” Actors Dale Dymkoski, as Billy, and Kelly Mengelkoch, as Sylvia were praised in their leading roles: “They were able to convey such emotion with few or no words and I was just mesmerized in their comfort level… Mengelkoch is an actress at the top of her game, giving a wonderfully nuanced and delicate performance.” Panelists were impressed with Michael Evan Haney’s direction: “Great ensembles are not created by accident. No matter how talented the individual actors may be, it takes a skilled director to blend and mold an ensemble of this caliber. Michael Evan Haney once again proves that he is one of the best directors in Cincinnati.”

Panelists also singled out Brian Mehring for his scenic design and Fitz Patton for sound design. “Brian Mehring’s set and lighting turned a normal house into something spectacular… meticulous to detail and creative.” “The sound design was intriguing, especially in conveying the silence that Billy hears, or the buzzing of his hearing aids….exceptional, real and believable.”

Tribes continues through February 16th. Tickets can be purchased at www.ensemblecincinnati.org.
