LCT Awards PO 11259 SINCERELY YOURS Top Prize in CCM’s Transmigration Series

CCM_logoPanelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized PO 11259 Sincerely Yours. as the best production at the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music’s TRANSMIGRATION series, the Drama department’s annual presentation of student written and produced work. Panelists awarded second place to The 17th Annual Snipes, Arkansas Harvest Festival, and honorable mentions to Dreams R Us: Tonight’s Answers to Tomorrow’s and Complex: A Structure of Sound, An Organism of Vibrations.

The sixth -annual festival allows the audience to experience half-hour works produced by small groups of Drama majors, who create and design all aspects of their productions from start to finish. The festival is an exciting event for both guests and the presenters, as audiences get the opportunity to see up to four very different pieces of new theatre in a single night and the students premiere works that are entirely their own. This year, six shows were presented.

PO 11259 was praised for being “funny and poignant” and “a cool concept”, while The Snipes, Arkansas Harvest Festival allowed its actors to show “a lot of dimensions in a short play”. Dreams R Us was described as “creative” and Complex was noted for an amazing soundtrack and “an absence of text that really allowed some beautiful, true communication and honesty from the actors.” Overall, the panelists were impressed by TRANSMIGRATIONS this year, with “a lot of energy, good dancing, clever use of audio and sound, and interesting plot angles.” As one panelist remarked, “It’s always interesting to see how well young actors can work together to create art and all the pieces certainly demonstrated much talent and effort.”

Falcon’s THE STORY OF MY LIFE Earns 4 Star LCT Rating

FT_The Story of my LifePanelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized the Falcon Theatre’s “Fourth Wall” production of THE STORY OF MY LIFE with a 4 Star Rating.

THE STORY OF MY LIFE is a moving musical that follows the friendship of Alvin and Thomas, two men from a small town. These lifelong friends are reunited after Alvin’s mysterious death. In the abstract world of his mind, Thomas struggles to write Alvin’s eulogy while recounting the many turns their lives have taken since meeting as children. The show was praised as  a“surprisingly touching and wonderful offering from the Falcon Theater.. a direct result of the strength of the two stars of the show [Zach Huffman and Brandon Fox] to create a world and make us believe in it.”

Clifton Player’s THE IRISH CURSE Measures Up to a 4.5 Star LCT Rating

THE IRISH CURSE, size matters to this small group of Irish-American men who meet every Wednesday night, in a Catholic church basement, at a self-help group for men with small penises.

Panelists praised the THE IRISH CURSE as “a hilarious and touching show…I was completely captivated. Considering the subject matter, I didn’t expect what I got: emotional depth, laser-quick dialogue, and electric chemistry between characters.” The entire cast was commended for their work: “the perfect epitome of a great ensemble. the chemistry between these actors was palpable…Each of these actors in their own way gave their own bravura performance.”

Cathy’s Springfield fine direction was also singled out: “she deserves kudos for having kept this powerhouse ensemble in check, letting them fly at critical moments,” maintaining a perfect pace and “just the right balance of humor and pathos.”

CCM’s LES MISERABLES Receives 5-Star Rating

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized the College Conservatory of Music’s production of the long running musical classic LES MISERABLES with a 5 Star Rating.

Panelists praised the production as “Spectacular…an outstanding and phenomenal production…Bravo for everyone involved for taking a musical I have seen multiple times and making it as fresh, exciting and powerful as the first.” Director Aubrey Berg was praised for his “seamless” direction: “Aubrey Berg said he had waited over 20 years to direct this musical at CCM and he could not have done it more effectively, with some masterful choices.” Musical Director Steve Goers also was commended for his “direction of these fine voices and in the outstanding orchestral accompaniment”: he did a “wonderful job with taking a beast of a show and making it sing beautifully”.

The panelists were impressed by the entire ensemble: “the show absolutely showcased the incredible depth of CCM’s students..the talent level continues to amaze.” Blaine Krauss, as Jean Valjean, “gave a sensitive, true portrayal of the character…his voice was moving…he should go directly to Broadway.” Panelists also singled out Colin Kessler, as Javert, for his “outstanding” performance and “remarkable voice”, as well as Matthew Paul Hill’s portrayal of Thenardier: “hilarious in an evil and unctuous manner. He almost stole the show.”

LES MISERABLES runs through March 9th. Tickets can be obtained through the CCM box office at their website, http://ccm.uc.edu/boxoffice.html. Note: this review was based on the opening night cast. On alternate nights, the roles of Jean Valjean and Javert are also played by Julian Decker and Noah Ricketts, respectively.

ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD Recommended by LCT with 4 Stars

The League of Cincinnati Theatres recommends Tom Stoppard’sROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, produced by the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. Panelists gave the show 4-Stars, and applauded the performances of Billy Chase, Justin McCombs and Jim Hopkins.

“This absurdist play was skillfully made coherent (and parts memorable) for an audience who may not know and love absurdist plays,” stated one panelist.

“The acting of our two leading men was flawless,” as the panelists heaped praises on Rosencrantz (McCombs) and Guildenstern (Chase).

“The Player King was haunting, imposing, ridiculous, desperate, and surprisingly a good ‘actor’ for the death scene,” stated another panelist regarding Jim Hopkins’ portrayal of the lead Player.

ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, which plays until March 9, explores the backstory of two of Shakespeare’s lesser characters in “Hamlet,” of which a phenomenal production CSC closed last week.
