Will Rogers was a unique American who, though he died almost sixty years ago, remains a beloved figure remembered for his humor, his wisdom, and his just plain common sense. At the heart of his populist philosophy was his most famous statement: “I never met a man I didn’t like.” Rogers became the biggest, most popular, and highest paid star of every existing medium of his time–stage, screen, radio, newspapers, and public appearances. In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that he was the greatest star this country has ever produced.

CCPA’s THE SUNSHINE BOYS Earns 4 Star LCT Rating

Covedale Theatre’s production of THE SUNSHINE BOYS is a crowd pleaser, earning 4 stars from The League of Cincinnati Theatres. It is running at the Covedale Theatre until June 29.

Panelists call it a “Great rendition of what is considered Neil Simon’s funniest play.”

“Herb DuVal (Willie) and Dave Roth (Al) delivered their lines like they were written for them,” said one panelist. “Their keen sense of timing and delivery told the story of these two cantankerous men who spent years working together in Vaudeville.” The team broke up due to a forgotten disagreement. “Down deep, they actually care for each other,” the panelist continued. Another added, “DuVal’s portrayal of Willie Clark was top notch. He was able to be both funny and compelling at the same time.”

Panelists also praised the set designed by Brett Bowling, “It was delightfully rich and intricate. It looked like a seedy hotel that an old actor would stay in. The photos on the wall of old celebrities were marvelous and it was great that a photo of the actor playing Al Lewis was pinned to the dart board and had drawn-in devil horns.”

League of Cincinnati Theatre panelists evaluate productions on a 5 star scale and recommend shows at either a 4 star or 5 star level. Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.

Cast: Herb DuVal as Willie Clark, Dave Roth as Al Lewis, Brandon Holcomb as Ben Silverman, Burgess Byrd as Registered Nurse, Afton Shepard as Burlesque Nurse & Steven Marck as Eddie, The TV Assistant

The story focuses on characters Al Lewis and Willy Clark, a one-time vaudevillian team known as “Lewis and Clark” who, over the course of forty-odd years, not only grew to hate each other but never spoke to each other off-stage throughout the final year of their act. The stubborn Clark, who was not ready for retirement, resented the wiser Lewis for breaking up the act when he opted to leave show business. It is now 1972 and CBS is inviting the team to reunite for a special on the history of comedy, with the pair representing the vaudeville era at its best. Clark is convinced by his nephew Ben to revive one of the old routines one last time. Much of the humour is derived from efforts to get the two cantankerous actors into the same room for a rehearsal, their differences of opinion once they reunite, and their shenanigans on the actual broadcast.

CCPA’s HELLO DOLLY Earns 4 Star LCT Rating

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized the Covedale Center for the Performing Arts’ production of “Hello Dolly!” with a 4 Star Rating.

HELLO, DOLLY! is an ebullient and irresistible story of the joy of living, glittering with happy songs, shining with loving scenes, alive with the personality of one of the most fabulous characters on the musical stage…Dolly Gallagher Levi.

Panelists called the show “a pure delight!”  About the ensemble, they said, “We, the audience, cannot help but cheer them all on.” Lesley Hitch was recognized for her work as Dolly, and Justin Glaser (“Cornelius Hackl”) and and Kalie Kaimann (“Minnie”) were both praised for their work as well.

CLP Seeks Prince/Wolf for INTO THE WOODS

CLPCincinnati Landmark Productions is seeking one male performer for our fall production of INTO THE WOODS.  This is the 2nd production in the Covedale’s 2014/15 season.

Requirements:  handsome, charismatic actor with an athletic to muscular build.  25-35 age range, preferably taller than 5’11” (but not a must).  Must be comfortable being shirtless on stage.  Must be a strong legit baritone/bari-tenor (A2-F#4).

This is a paid gig.

Audition date:  Tuesday, June 17th.

Audition appointments include:  6:30pm & 7:00pm
