Video Auditions Announced for Several Roles in NEWSIES at Commonwealth Artists Student Theatre

CAST_logoCommonwealth Artists Student Theatre (CAST) is holding open auditions for roles needed in their upcoming production of NEWSIES.

NEWSIES: New York City, 1899. Jack Kelly and his ragtag team of newsboys make a meager living selling newspapers on the city streets. But when the prices of “papes” are hiked and the newsies are hung out to dry, there is nothing left to do but “open the gates and seize the day!” Led by charismatic Jack and independent, young newspaper reporter Katherine Plummer, the Newsies form a union and organize a strike against the greedy publisher of the New York World. Can a group of idealistic newsboys win against a foe as powerful as acclaimed publisher Joseph Pulitzer? Inspired by the true story of the 1899 Newsboys Strike, Newsies is an ebullient, joyful, and entertaining musical capturing the strength that young people have when they join together and stand up against injustice. With a funny, poignant book by Harvey Feirstein and stunning music by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman — including the show-stopping Seize the Day, power ballad “Santa Fe” and lovely new songs like Katherine’s “Watch What Happens — Newsies is a classic with the power to inspire.

We are accepting video auditions for vocal/acting and dance.  Video submissions are due by Friday, May 29th by 5pm.

Audition requirements

  • For NEWSIES, you need to recite a memorized 45 second to 1-minute monologue and sing a 32-measure excerpt from a Broadway show similar to Newsies that showcases your vocal talents. You will also need to learn a dance audition that will be found at https://tinyurl.com/CASTDance20

CAST_logo

Here is a message from our Artistic Director, Jason Burgess, about auditions and crew interviews for tomorrow.

“Greetings Auditionees and Interviewees: I wanted to give you an update on auditions and crew interviews for tomorrow, Saturday, March 14th.

Both events WILL be taking place. Because these events are basically individual to individual interaction events, we feel safe and confident continuing them. We will be practicing “social distancing” of trying to remain 6 feet away from each other and advise others to do the same.

If you are not confident in this approach and would prefer to submit a video audition, then we are completely fine with this. You may email us a video audition by 5pm on Saturday, March 14th to jasonburgess@caststages.org. If you are unable to meet this deadline for the video submission, please email us and let us know and we might be able to make other accommodations.

As far as crew interviews are concerned, if you are not confident in this approach and would prefer to do a phone interview, we are completely fine with this. Please email us at jasonburgess@caststages.org and we will set up a time to do a phone interview with you.

As far as callbacks are concerned for PUFFS and NEWSIES, the production teams are working right now to figure everything out and we will have a definitive plan by the end of auditions tomorrow, Saturday, March 14th. At this moment, we plan on still holding callbacks next Saturday and posting all cast and crew lists on Tuesday, March 31st.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns at all, please do not hesitate to reach out and email us at jasonburgess@caststages.org.

Sincerely,
Jason Burgess

SPRING AWAKENING is set in Germany, 1891, a world where the grown-ups hold all the cards. The beautiful young Wendla explores the mysteries of her body and wonders aloud where babies come from… until Mama tells her to shut it and put on a proper dress. Elsewhere, the brilliant and fearless young Melchior interrupts a mind-numbing Latin drill to defend his buddy, Moritz – a boy so traumatized by puberty that he can’t concentrate on anything… not that the Headmaster cares. He strikes them both and tells them to turn in their lesson. One afternoon, in a private place in the woods, Melchior and Wendla meet by accident and soon find within themselves a desire unlike anything they’ve ever felt. As they fumble their way into one another’s arms, Moritz flounders and soon fails out of school. When even his one adult friend, Melchior’s mother, ignores his plea for help, he is left so distraught that he can’t hear the promise of life offered by his outcast friend, Ilse. Naturally, the Headmasters waste no time in pinning the “crime” of Moritz’s suicide on Melchior to expel him. And soon, Mama learns that her little Wendla is pregnant. Now the young lovers must struggle against all odds to build a world together for their child. Advisory: SPRING AWAKENING deals with strong language and mature situations. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
