The Social Cycle brings a sword fight to a winery, laser tag with aliens to a mall and more

CINCINNATI– Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park announced today its 2019-2020 Off the Grid series of interactive theatrical experiences. Called The Social Cycle, the new season combines social events at popular venues around Greater Cincinnati with classic literary stories reimagined for modern day. The immersive theatre experiences include the opportunity for optional audience participation. The first event takes place Oct. 17, with alien fighting and more at THE WAR OF THE MALLS at Tri-County Mall, followed by BEAUTY AND THE BOURBON TASTING on Friday, Nov. 8 at the New Riff Distillery.

“With The Social Cycle, we want to meet people where they like to hang out and spend their time with friends,” explains Daunielle Rasmussen, director of education and community engagement, who created the concept of Off the Grid and The Social Cycle. “By staging a sword fight in a winery, fighting aliens at laser tag or taking a yoga class with Mr. Darcy, our audiences will experience familiar stories in unexpected ways in fun environments.”

Later in the season, The Social Cycle presents:

  • THE COUNT OF MONTE PESTO, Feb. 25-27, 2020, at Kate’s Catering and Personal Chef Services
  • PRIDE, PREJUDICE AND YOGA, March 14-22, 2020, at Oakley Crunch Fitness
  • NANCY BREW AND THE KILLER BAR CRAWL, April 16, 2020, Mt. Adams Pavilion and other bars
  • THE BRIE MUSKETEERS, May 16, 2020, Vinoklet Winery & Restaurant

“The Social Cycle takes the interactive and immersive experiences we’ve developed over the past three seasons of Off the Grid to the next level,” Rasmussen continued. “Each experience will be unique to the venue and story that is being told. Our audiences can be a part of it as much or as little as they feel comfortable participating.”

Off the Grid is supported by the generosity of the thousands of young professional contributors to the ArtsWave Campaign.

Fact and Fiction Collide in THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT

PIP_Lifespan of a Fact promo

Promotional photo by Tony Arrasmith/Arrasmith & Associates.

Critically acclaimed Broadway play comes to the Marx Theatre on Oct. 19

CINCINNATI – Witness the ultimate showdown of fact vs. fiction when Moe and Jack Rouse and Randolph Wadsworth present THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT beginning Oct. 19 at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. This whip-smart comedy will run through Nov. 16, with opening night on Oct. 24.

Based on real-life events and people, THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT tracks the controversial publication of an essay that was written by acclaimed nonfiction author John D’Agata and fact-checked by Jim Fingal, then an intern at The Believer magazine. When Fingal points out factual inaccuracies and problematic embellishments throughout the essay, D’Agata fires back rationale as to why he took certain creative liberties– all of which creates tension for the publisher, Emily Penrose.

Written by Jeremy Kareken, David Murrell and Gordon Farrell, this entertaining, contemporary comedy explodes with timely relevance and lightning-fast pace. The character’s verbal tête-à-têtes onstage about storytelling and truth promise to engage audience members in conversation long after leaving the theatre.

The Playhouse’s production of THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT is helmed by award-winning director Wendy C. Goldberg. She is one of the Playhouse’s Associate Artists, and her work has been seen previously at the theatre in Leveling Up, Circle Mirror Transformation, Durango and Doubt. Goldberg is the current Artistic Director of the National Playwrights Conference at The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. Under her leadership, the O’Neill received the Regional Theatre Tony Award in 2010.

“What’s great about the play is that you’re never quite sure where it’s headed,” says Goldberg. “It’s so well-constructed that the audience never gets ahead of it and never knows where the twists and turns will lead. It’s so satisfying in that way.”

Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Ohio’s only two-time Tony Award-winning theatre, boasts productions that are both nationally recognized and locally crafted. The 2019-2020 season includes productions featuring actors, directors, and designers who regularly work on and off Broadway and at other leading professional theatres across the country. All productions are presented at the Playhouse’s iconic Eden Park setting.

EVENTS
PLAYHOUSE PERSPECTIVES: THE CURRENT STATE OF THE FACT
Monday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Playhouse

“I’m not interested in accuracy. I’m interested in truth,” states John D’Agata in THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT. How do media writers — whether they’re a journalist, essayist or critic — interpret the word “fact,” especially in a time when facts and opinions are often considered interchangeable? Join Cincinnati Magazine Editor-in-Chief John Fox and a panel of media experts as they dissect and discuss the definition of “fact” through their own professional lens. This event is free, but registration is required by calling the Box Office at 513-421-3888 or visiting cincyplay.com.  Playhouse Perspectives is made possible thanks to a generous gift from Barbara and Roderick Barr.

THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park
Oct. 19-Nov. 16
Marx Theatre [Eden Park]

Directed by Wendy Goldberg

A critically acclaimed 2018 Broadway play, this fast-paced story explodes with blistering comedy and timely relevance. Facts become blurry when they’re twisted into fiction in the high-stakes world of publishing. Emily Penrose, the demanding editor-in-chief of a high-end magazine, hires a determined millennial fact-checker named Jim Fingal to work on a groundbreaking essay written by the famous author John D’Agata. The deadline is tight, the essay is dense, and everyone must make a good faith effort in telling the story honestly. But the overly eager Jim takes his fact-checking way too far, creating the ultimate showdown of fact versus fiction. THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT is suitable for adults and older teenage audiences. Characters lock horns in a debate of fact vs. fiction, and they drop some F-bombs in the process. Their explosive tête-à-têtes feature other mature themes, including discussions of suicide.

THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE Will Tour Cincinnati This Fall

PIP_EdwardTulane

Playhouse’s 2019-20 Off the Hill series opens Sept. 28

CINCINNATI – Children and families are invited to join Edward Tulane on a courageous adventure when Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park brings THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE to life at community centers throughout the region. The show is part of the Playhouse’s Off the Hill series and runs Sept. 28 through Nov. 1.

Based on the beloved book by Katie DiCamillo, this tale of love and loss follows the life of a conceited china rabbit, Edward Tulane, who is accidentally thrown overboard while on an ocean voyage with his owner. On a quest to get back home, Edward must learn the meaning of love during an extraordinary adventure that takes him through the hands of many owners around the world.

This theatrical tour-de-force, directed by Playhouse Director of Education and Community Engagement Daunielle Rasmussen, is performed by a small ensemble of actors from the Bruce E. Coyle Intern Company that portrays over 25 characters.

“THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE is a beautiful story about learning how to feel empathy for other people and what it means to love,” says Rasmussen. “Edward learns to appreciate and ultimately love each person that he comes in contact with throughout his journey. Just as Edward learns more about himself, we can learn from Edward how important it is to see things through other people’s point of view to better understand them.”

The production features live music played by the actors and a transformative set depicting a train boxcar during the Dust Bowl era.

“It’s going to have the feel of an old Vaudeville hall,” describes Sound Designer Trey Tatum. “Expect guitar, ukulele, washboard, plus whatever other quirky instruments we can think of to fit into an actor’s hand.”

The Playhouse’s production will journey all over greater Cincinnati, from Oxford to Cheviot, from Union to Covington and many places in between. THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE is the first of three Playhouse Off the Hill productions for the 2019-20 Season, which also will present Stuart Little and Dragons Love Tacos.

Off the Hill is sponsored by The John C. Griswold Foundation and KeyBank. Seasonal support of education and outreach programming is provided by The Robert and Adele Schiff Family Foundation. The Bruce E. Coyle Acting Intern Company is supported by Jerry and Betsy Shroat, as well as Ron Bunt and Wei Sun.

The Playhouse is supported by the generosity of almost 40,000 contributors to the ArtsWave Community campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation.
