CABARET May 10 – 22, 2016

Award®-winning production of CABARET.
Audiences are welcomed to the infamous Kit Kat Klub, where the Emcee, Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd––and to leave their troubles outside. But as life in pre-WWII Germany grows more and more uncertain, will the decadent allure of Berlin nightlife be enough to get them through their dangerous times? This show includes some of the most memorable songs in theatre history, including “Cabaret,” “Willkommen” and “Maybe This Time.” CABARET is John Kander, Fred Ebb and Joe Masteroff’s Tony-winning musical about following one’s heart while the world loses its way.

NKU_logoHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – The Department of Theatre and Dance at Northern Kentucky University is proud to announce its 2015-2016 Academic Season.

MOON OVER BUFFALO
By Ken Ludwig
September 24 – October 4, 2015 | NKU Corbett Theatre

George and Charlotte Hay, fading stars of the 1950’s, are on a tour through Buffalo, New York, playing Private Lives and Cyrano De Bergerac in rep. On the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by George’s dalliance with a young ingénue, they receive word that they might just have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee, and if he likes what he sees, he might cast them in his next big feature. Unfortunately for our leading players, everything that could go wrong does go wrong—including hilarious uncertainty about which play they’re actually performing. Will the pair pull themselves together in order to give the performance of their lives?

THE WINTER’S TALE
By William Shakespeare
October 20 – 25, 2015 | NKU Robert and Rosemary Stauss Theatre

Tragic, romantic, hilarious, and uplifting, this genre-bending masterpiece is one of Shakespeare’s most elegant and haunting plays. THE WINTER’S TALE leaps from darkest tragedy to lighthearted romance and a truly magical conclusion. This enchanting classic celebrates redemption, reconciliation, and the mending of broken hearts. Princes and princesses, disguised identities, jealous kings, oracles, pickpockets, and one ravenous bear—if you haven’t seen THE WINTER’S TALE before, don’t miss this opportunity!

SEUSSICAL
By Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty
November 12 – 22, 2015 | NKU Corbett Theatre

Bring your whole family to see the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss come to life on our stage this November. The Cat in the Hat is our host and emcee as Seuss’ most beloved stories find themselves intertwined in an epic adventure, in which the power of imagination and the most miraculous “think” ever save the day! The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant. SEUSSICAL is fun for the whole family — It’s Dr. Seuss like you’ve never seen him before!

ONCE IN A LIFETIME
By George S. Kaufman Moss Hart
February 18 – 28, 2016 | NKU Corbett Theatre

The first of many collaborations between the legendary writing duo, Kaufman and Hart’s ONCE IN A LIFETIME is a laugh-out-loud extravaganza. Indulge in this wickedly funny tale of three on-the-skids vaudeville troupers—Jerry, Mae, and George—who decide to take advantage of the latest craze, “talkies,” by heading to Hollywood and posing as voice experts. There they find absurd silent-film starlets, insane movie studio executives, crazy gossip columnists, desperate cigarette girls, dim witted stage mothers, and jaded studio hands. This delectable sendup of the excesses of Hollywood will keep you on the edge your seat through every hilarious twist and turn.

PYGMALION
By George Bernard Shaw
March 29 – April 3, 2016 | NKU Robert and Rosemary Stauss Theatre

PYGMALION—written over a century ago—continues to provide hilarious entertainment and sharp social commentary that resonates today. A chance encounter between Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl, and Henry Higgins, a world expert on speech, inspires a bet that he can transform her into a lady. As Higgins strives to do the impossible, Shaw employs his trademark wit to examine issues of class and independence. Later adapted into the hit musical My Fair Lady, Shaw’s original tale is not one of romance, but of transformation and self-identity.

INTO THE WOODS
By Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine
April 21 – May 1, 2016 | NKU Corbett Theatre

In this timeless musical, your favorite fairytales are flipped upside down… and given a hefty dose of reality to boot. You might think you know the real stories of Little Red, Cinderella, Jack, and Rapunzel, but when a Baker and his wife learn of the curse placed upon their house by the witch next door, their quest to break the spell will cause fairytales to collide. As expected, wishes are granted and dreams come true, but in this modern classic, ‘happily ever after’ is not always what it seems: wishes have consequences, princes have flaws, and giants seek revenge.
