Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s THE BIRDS recognized by LCT for its sound and lighting design.

THE BIRDS is an adaptation of Daphne Du Marier’s short story which was also the inspiration for Hitchcock’s classic film. For reasons unknown, the birds have turned against man, attacking them maliciously and relentlessly. In a small seaside cabin, a group of strangers find themselves thrust together, each seeking sanctuary from the savage avian menace. But as the situation becomes increasingly dire and the tension between the survivors inexorably grows, it isn’t long before the atmosphere turns ugly, and they discover that the horror hovering outside is nothing compared to that which lurks within.

Panelists praised Andrew Hungerford for lighting design and Doug Borntrager for sound design: “Lighting and sound contribute to the sense of menace and claustrophobia while the actors continue to open and close the shuttered doors and windows between waves of the bird attacks. The lighting is especially dramatic when leaking through the barricaded windows and the continuous sounds of the birds reminds the audience of the outside threat.”

CSC’s THE BIRDS runs through November 8th. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.cincyshakes.com/

Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT party in the summer.

“Girl Singer Comes Home in Playhouse’s Production of TENDERLY: THE ROSEMARY CLOONEY MUSICAL Nov. 15-Jan. 11

“GIRL SINGER” COMES HOME IN CINCINNATI PLAYHOUSE IN THE PARK’S PRODUCTION OF
TENDERLY: THE ROSEMARY CLOONEY MUSICAL,
 NOV. 15 – JAN 11. 2015

PIP_Tenderly(CINCINNATI) – No matter where in the world her voice and fortunes took her, Rosemary Clooney always came home. And that’s the case yet again with TENDERLY: THE ROSEMARY CLOONEY MUSICAL, which debuts Nov. 15 through Dec. 28 in the Playhouse’s intimate Thompson Shelterhouse Theatre.

Due to continued demand for tickets, the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park has added a second extension to its popular production of TENDERLY: THE ROSEMARY CLOONEY MUSICAL, which celebrates Cincinnati’s legendary “girl singer.” The show, originally set to close on Dec. 28 and then extended through Jan. 4, now will run through Jan. 11, 2015.

The extension adds eight new performances: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6; 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7; 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8; 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9; 4 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10; and 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11.

For Artistic Director Blake Robison, who is directing TENDERLY, bringing Rosemary “home” to the Tristate is particularly significant. “Everyone I’ve met in Cincinnati feels a special kinship with the Clooney family,” he says. “Rosemary is a local treasure. She’s one of us.”

TENDERLY’S hometown roots extend to its co-authors as well. Written by Cincinnati playwrights Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman, TENDERLY was first featured at the New Works Festival 2010 at the Human Race Theatre in Dayton, Ohio. It had its stage premiere in a Broadway Series production at Dayton’s Victoria Theatre in 2012. The Playhouse version is new, explains Robison: “Mark and Janet have expanded the piece to two acts. There are more classic songs and more scenes from her life.”

Those songs, 17 in all, include her signature hits “White Christmas,” “Tenderly” and “Come On-A My House” (the latter of which she almost refused to record — and which, ironically, rocketed her to fame).

Rosemary Clooney was born in Maysville, Kentucky, shortly before the Depression. She began her singing career at age 16 with her younger sister Betty on WLW radio in 1945, which then became a launching pad for the sister act to tour the country with the Tony Pastor Band. At 21, Rosemary went solo, and soon a star was born.

Her voice also brought her to movie fame — she appeared in a handful of films, including the iconic holiday classic White Christmas. In the midst of her burgeoning career, she married veteran theatre and film actor José Ferrer in 1953 and gave birth to their five children between 1955 and 1960. The decade that followed brought a divorce from her stormy marriage, an increasing dependency on drugs that helped to fuel an emotional breakdown and a decline in her career.

But that was far from the final chapter. In succeeding years, Rosemary reinvented herself with therapy, the renewal of an old love affair and a new focus on a jazz and American songbook repertoire that resonated to the end of her life.

“Rosemary’s story is remarkable and inspirational,” Robison says of Clooney, who “saw herself as a ‘girl singer.’ This production captures the ups and downs of her career in an honest, celebratory manner. It has an incredible song list of her greatest hits, and the scenes are packed with stories of her home life, family, her time in Cincinnati and her life in Hollywood. I’ve been inspired by the depth of her talent, the longevity of her career and her personal resilience.”

Susan Haefner, whose Broadway credits include State Fair, Thoroughly Modern Millie and 42nd Street, makes her Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park debut as Rosemary Clooney. Michael Marotta, who was seen in last season’s Playhouse production of Cabaret as Herr Schultz, portrays The Doctor. The creative team for TENDERLY includes music director Scot Woolley, set designer Bill Clarke, costume designer Bill Black, lighting designer Phil Monat, sound designer Jeremy J. Lee and choreographer Dee Anne Bryll. Jenifer Morrow is the production stage manager, and Becky Merold is the stage manager.

TENDERLY is sponsored by Clark, Schaefer, Hackett & Co. and Moe and Jack Rouse. The Geiler Company is the design sponsor, and the Morse and Betty Johnson Family is the Rosemary Clooney artist sponsor. This production honors the support of Lee Meyer.

Ticket prices for TENDERLY start at $30. Prices are subject to change, and patrons are encouraged to buy early for the best seats at the best prices. Teen and student tickets are $30 each. The show is recommended for adults and teenage audiences.

Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturdays, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sundays.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have awarded Falcon Theatre’s production of THE WOMAN IN BLACK a 4.5 (out of 5) star recommendation, calling it “master storytelling.”

One of the longest-running plays in London, this classic Victorian ghost story is set in a theater. The two actors, Matt Dentino and Jay Dallas Benson, both highly commended by the LCT Panel, play multiple roles. “This is a spooky, layered, labyrinthine story,” one panelist said. “Benson and Dentino do a good job of telling the story while portraying multiple characters with different dialects.”

The LCT Panel also praised the lighting and sound design as well as direction, all three by Ted Weil and Tracy M. Schoster. “Technically, the show is spectacular,” a panelist said. “The direction, lights and sound are what bring this show to life.” According to a panelist, “This show is perfectly timed for the season and one of the most entertaining productions this region has seen in some time.”

Falcon Theatre’s THE WOMAN IN BLACK runs Oct. 24-25 and Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at www.falcontheatre.net or 513-481-9042.

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have awarded Ensemble Theatre’s production of AN ILIAD with a 5 star recommendation.

In AN ILIAD, the ancient thrilling tales of the Trojan War and the modern world collide in this captivating theatrical experience as we explore the psychology of passion and rage. Cincinnati actor Bruce Cromer embodies the Greek classic’s famous characters Achilles, Hector, Agammemnon—even the beautiful Helen of Troy–in a one man performance. This lean, muscular, tour-de-force performance conjures the fury of the gods as it delves deep into mankind’s unshakeable attraction to violence, destruction, and chaos.

Panelists raved about the production: “Every element of it worked beautifully, from the versatile, ‘meta’ setting design, pacing, and, finally, Bruce Cromer’s riveting performance as the poet. I rarely find a production so flawless, but this one sweeps the audience away, emotionally and intellectually.” Bruce Cromer “is stellar; his mercurial shifts into different characters, from gods to heroes to warriors and their women, his wonderful physicality, the agility with which he owns and uses the stage is just mesmerizing…this may be the best performance by an actor that I’ve seen In Cincinnati.” Director Michael Haney “did an excellent job of keeping the story clear and highlighting the complexity of human nature from the Greeks to the 21st century.” Technical aspects of the show, including Brian C. Mehring’s set and lighting design, and Matt Callahan’s sound design, were also singled out, all “masterfully planned and executed”. Overall the panelists said the show was “not to be missed—whether you know The Iliad well or not at all.”

ETC’s AN ILIAD runs through November 2nd. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.ensemblecincinnati.org.

Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT party in the summer.
