POV: A Dance Exploration of Poverty, Homelessness, and Over-the-Rhine

Embark on a journey with Pones Inc. as we explore our city with a new perspective.

Pones logoOn the heels of its sold-out Fringe production, Shelter, Pones Inc. brings a new piece to Cincinnati audiences which investigates the dynamics of poverty in the Queen City. POV (previously titled ConverseNation) was presented at the CrisisArt Festival held in Arezzo, Italy in 2014, and premiered in Cincinnati in October 2014 as a demonstration of the powerful effect art can have on social change. The work was incredibly well-received on both international and local platforms, with audience members sharing how they “now question their own ideas of privilege,” and calling the work “A beautiful crescendo that invited me to play” and “Powerful, meaningful, sensual, poetic. Very good use of space, the best show I have seen in a long time.”

Through technology and careful listening, Pones company members interviewed a range of people, recording as many interviews as possible and creating POV as a dance piece with a documentary video component. The work is site-specific, taking the audience on a tour of Over-the-Rhine’s lesser-seen corners, using both natural and constructed spaces. “[The show] is visually striking and wonderfully innovative – taking the audience on an evening walk through the neighborhood that is the focus of the show, historic and diverse Over-the-Rhine.” Audiences begin at Washington Park and journey throughout OTR, seeing multiple dance vignettes and stopping off in various indoor spaces, such as NAST Community UMC, to view documentary video. The production involves collaborators such as the Young Professionals Choral Collective, local musician Preston Charles Bell III, Chicago’s hottest spoken word artist J. Evelyn, and local flash mob theatre collective Queen City Flash. Embark with us on this conversation about the economic inequality of our city, as we explore its manifestations with a new perspective.

Performances will take place September 11, 12, and 13 from 8:00-10:00 p.m.

Reservations can be made online, https://ponesinc.wordpress.com/productions/pov/ and tickets will be $15 per person, payable at the beginning of the performance via cash, check, or credit card.

Pones Inc. provides artistic opportunities for community growth by creating engaging new ways for audiences to experience dance.

Founded in 2008, Pones Inc. has collaborated with over 200 artists and 100 art and service organizations. The company creates site-specific performances through a fusion of movement and dance with other art forms. Pones Inc. performers use their bodies to speak their minds and uses its signature pedestrian-inspired movement to spark collaboration, connection, and community. Pones Inc. believes that art creates powerful change.

Music Hall Open House and LEGO® Scale Model | August 5-9 | Music Hall

CAA_Lego Music HallMusic Hall Open House
During LumenoCity Week

Open House Includes Mini-Tours and
LEGO® Scale Model of Music Hall and Washington Park

August 5-7 • 4:00-6:00 PM
August 8-9 • 3:00-6:00 PM
Music Hall

CINCINNATI, OH – How many LEGO® does it take to build the façade of Music Hall and Washington Park?  Bring your family and find out for yourself when a 1/50 scale-model LEGO® replica of these iconic Over-the-Rhine landmarks goes on display in the Music Hall Foyer this Wednesday-Friday, August 5-7 from 4:00 PM-6:00 PM and Saturday-Sunday, August 8-9 from 3:00 PM-6:00 PM.  During these times, guests can also take advantage of a Music Hall Open House and tour many of the venue’s interior spaces.

Both events are FREE and open to the public.

The Music Hall and Washington Park scale model was built by local LEGO® enthusiast, Mark Clark.  According to Mark, “The Music Hall building alone in its original full form took 900 hours to build over 7.5 months.  Washington Park took a few months to build while the OTR brownstones have been sporadically built over the last year.  I wouldn’t even venture to guess how many bricks are in it now!”

The Music Hall Open House, created to enhance the LumenoCity guest experience, will include:

  • Free history-themed mini-tours by the Society for the Preservation of Music Hall
  • Free ghost-themed mini-tours by Cincinnati Research & Paranormal Studies

MAIN FOYER:

  • LEGO exhibit by local model-maker Mark Clark (see bio below), whose original model included the façade and auditorium of Music Hall. His most recent project (which is quite large at 10’ x 18’) has modified that model, retaining the façade, losing the auditorium, and dramatically expanding the areas surrounding Music Hall to now include Washington Park, Elm and Race Streets, streetcars, and a model of the Albee Theatre.
  • Information from the City of Cincinnati about the streetcar project, which will run along Elm Street in front of Music Hall (and along Race Street across Washington Park) in the near future.

CORBETT TOWER:  Display of historic art-carved decorative panels from the original Music Hall pipe organ, accompanied by a documentary by local film maker Melissa Godoy about the restoration of the panels.

BALLROOM:  The “Mighty Wurlitzer” pipe organ from the Albee Theatre will be on display. This spectacular instrument has been fully restored to its original glory, and is at home along with the many other architectural artifacts of the Albee Theatre.  NOTE:  The Ballroom will be closed on Saturday for a private event.

“We’re excited to have Mark Clark’s amazing display back at Music Hall, and extend our thanks for his efforts in creating something as unique as the building itself,” said Scott Santangelo, Director of Operations, Music Hall. “ We’re also grateful to the Society for the Preservation of Music Hall and the Cincinnati Research and Paranormal Studies groups, who will have volunteers on hand to welcome visitors and share stories about this National Historic Landmark, one of the country’s most recognizable (and apparently haunted!) theaters. Music Hall belongs to our community, and we look forward to our guests stopping by for a visit!”

MARK CLARK
Born in Western Kentucky in 1967, Mark moved to Cincinnati in 1972, attended Princeton schools from grades K-12, and graduated in 1985.  He attended The Ohio State University for three years, where he majored in aerospace engineering, and transferred back to the University of Cincinnati, where he finished his degree in computer systems engineering.  Mark lives in Mason with his wife Mary and daughter Ashley, and has been involved in Cincinnati technology, consulting, and various start-ups since 1993.  His love for the hobby of building with LEGO® was rekindled in 2012 with two LEGO®-kit Christmas gifts from his mother and his wife, and he has been hooked ever since.  Mark joined a local LEGO® User’s Group (OKILUG: Ohio Kentucky Indiana LEGO® User’s Group)  to learn and share with other like-minded LEGO® enthusiasts and builders.  Mark first discovered the magnificence of Music Hall at the age of six, when he attended Cincinnati Ballet’s Frisch’s Presents The Nutcracker.  He has been touring and showing the model for two years and has talked to thousands of people about the building’s history and heritage.

Voices of Indiana Presents MARY POPPINS

VOI_Mary Poppins logoLawrenceburg, IN – Voices of Indiana presents a Voices of Broadway production: MARY POPPINS.

Friday, August 7th and Saturday, August 8th at 7:00 p.m. in the Lawrenceburg High School Auditorium.

VOI was awarded a 2015 Summertime Kids Grant through the Greater Cincinnati Foundation to be used toward VOB and this production of MARY POPPINS.

Drawing talented performers from throughout the area, the cast includes youth participants in grades 4-12 and adults.

Directed by Susan Herrick and Jennifer Eliason, this presentation of MARY POPPINS is a family-friendly staging of the West End musical. With music and lyrics by the Academy Award-winning Sherman Brothers (with additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe) and a script by Julian Fellowes, the musical is based on the similarly titled series of children’s books by P. L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film, and is a fusion of various elements from the two.

Admission is $10 for adults or $5 for students; tickets are available at the door (cash or check accepted).

The title role is played by Bryssa Helton, a student at East Central High School. “This is a role in which I can just come alive as an actor. The stage is my home, and this opportunity is what I’ve been working toward since the beginning!”

Mary Poppins is the story of the Banks family who live in a big house in London on Cherry Lane. Things are not going well for the family, the children, Jane and Michael, are out of control and are in need of a new nanny. Jane and Michael have their own ideas about what sort of caretaker they should have, while their parents—and in particular Mr. Banks—are insistent on someone strict for the job.

When a mysterious young woman named Mary Poppins appears at their doorstep, the family finds that she’s the answer to their prayers, but in the most peculiar way. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones she has a profound effect upon. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “anything can happen if you let it.”

An Education that Sings: Voices of Indiana was formed in 2001 by current Creative Director Susan Herrick, under the Dearborn Highland Arts Council, and became an independent organization in 2006. Featuring nearly 100 young people from the Tri-State, ranging from second grade through high school, Young Voices is the flagship program of Voices of Indiana. VOICES OF BROADWAY (VOB) is a summer program that seeks to build upon the foundations of the music education at the core of our program within the format of learning and performing a Broadway musical. A key objective of VOB is that it is inclusive; productions are chosen that have the option of flexible casting, and although roles are auditioned, all interested participants have a part in the production. VOI was awarded a 2015 Summertime Kids Grant through the Greater Cincinnati Foundation to be used toward VOB and this production of MARY POPPINS.

Voices of Indiana is a recognized 501c3 not-for-profit educational organization. Young Voices seeks to educate children through learning and sharing the gift of music by nurturing a singer’s heart, mind and soul. www.VoicesofIndiana.org.www.facebook.com/voicesofindiana.

Theresa’s second book titled “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” was released in September 2014 and debuted at #9 on the NY Times Best Seller List. Her first book titled “There’s More to Life Than This” debuted in the fall of 2013.
