Knox Rocks Free Children’s Concert Features Grammy-Nominated Singer Zak Morgan

KNOX_Zak Morgan promo

(August 7, 2017) – Children throughout Cincinnati are invited to a free concert featuring award-winning and Grammy-nominated children’s singer Zak Morgan on September 9, from 4:00-6;00pm on the lawn of Knox Presbyterian Church, 3400 Michigan Avenue, Hyde Park.

The second annual “Knox Rocks” concert will also feature a variety of lawn games, food and other family-friendly activities, including plenty of sing-along and dance-along time.

Morgan’s CD “When Bullfrogs Croak” was nominated for a Grammy, a rare feat for an independent artist. When he is not writing and recording, Zak performs family concerts throughout the country. His live performances are always filled with laughter and warmth as he encourages children to read, imagine and believe in themselves.  Morgan has released three critically acclaimed records and one DVD, with lyrics often that are both gently humorous and meaningful—and often compared with Shel Silverstein.

Morgan currently resides in Cincinnati, OH and is working on his fourth record.

“Knox Rocks” attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.  Free food and drinks will be provided, and indoor restrooms will be available.  In the event of inclement weather, the concert will move indoors.

By 1991 he had released two singles that were played on over two hundred radio stations.  Morgan’s second CD, When Bullfrogs Croak,  was nominated for a Grammy, a rare feat for an independent release. www.zakmorgan.com

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Opens The Otto M. Budig Theater with A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

The company announces casting for the new theater’s premiere production.

CINCINNATI, August 9, 2017 – The Otto M. Budig Theater, the new custom-built home of the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company in Over-the-Rhine, opens on September 8 with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The production runs through September 30 and is directed by Producing Artistic Director Brian Isaac Phillips. The cast features longtime resident ensemble members Matthew Lewis Johnson as Bottom, Giles Davies as Oberon, Associate Artist Miranda McGee as Titania, and Associate Artistic Director Sara Clark as Puck. The production is sponsored by Bartlett & Co, LLC. The season is funded by ArtsWave and the season sponsors are The Otto M. Budig Family Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council.

Hermia (Courtney Lucien) loves Lysander (Crystian Wiltshire). Lysander (Kyle Brumley) loves Hermia. Demetrius loves Hermia. Helena (Caitlin McWethy) loves Demetrius, and no one loves Helena. When this convoluted love quadrangle flees from prying parental eyes to the forest, they run straight into an ongoing bitter dispute between Oberon (Giles Davies) and Titania (Miranda McGee), the King and the Queen of the Fairies, and magical interference turns all their relationships topsy-turvy. Meanwhile, a troupe of enthusiastic but inept thespians likewise falls into magical mayhem as their leading man, Bottom (Matthew Lewis Johnson), finds himself the butt of a fairy joke when the trickster Puck (Sara Clark) swaps his head for a donkey’s – an alteration that Titania finds a distinct improvement.

Producing Artistic Director Brian Isaac Phillips offered the following thoughts on why he chose A Midsummer Night’s Dream to be the inaugural production of The Otto M. Budig Theater: “As our company is in the process of transforming from what it was on Race Street to what it will be on Elm Street, I wanted a play that was all about transformation, and the transformative powers of love. The lovers experience transformation as they leave Athens and enter the forest – itself a place of transformation – and even a foolish human can be transformed into a magical half-donkey creature.” Featuring a design that marries theatrical magic with high-tech accents, this production is sure to enchant audience members of all ages, and will be great fun for families.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ was selected to receive support from The National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest presenting Shakespeare in American Communities. Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is one of 40 professional theater companies selected to participate in bringing the finest productions of Shakespeare to middle- and high-school students in communities across the United States. Cincinnati Shakespeare will be welcoming hundreds of students to the new Otto M. Budig Theater throughout the month of September for Educational Matinees of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.  This production is also collaborating with the Cincinnati Museum Center to welcome student groups to see the First Folio on display at Union Terminal before or after they attend a production!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream runs September 8-30, with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2:00 PM, as well as Saturdays September 9 and 30 at 2:00 PM.  The performances on the opening weekend Saturday Sep. 9 and Sunday Sep. 10 will have open house events before and after performances for added celebration of the opening! These events are free and open to the public.

The theater is now located at 1195 Elm Street in OTR, adjacent to Washington Park. Single ticket prices range from $27-$52. If available, $14 student rush tickets may be purchased thirty minutes before a show with a valid student ID. This production is a part of this season’s subscription package. Visa, Discover, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted. Ticketing fees may apply.  Discounts are available for students, seniors and groups as well as AAA members. To purchase tickets or for more information, call the CSC Box Office at 513.381.BARD (2273) ext. 1, or go online at www.cincyshakes.com.

98° will support Let It Snow with the 98° at Christmas tour, a 31-city trek that starts November 10 in Larchwood, IA and concludes December 23 in Primm, NV. Preorder Let It Snowhttps://UMe.lnk.to/LetItSnow

Recording Let It Snow was an easy decision. “As a group, our favorite record, hands down, is [This Christmas],” says Drew. “We’re proud of the music, the harmonies, the production. It’s a Christmas record that every year people can put on and enjoy.”

“We have primarily a female audience, but we’ll have guys come up to us and say, ‘You know what? I love the Christmas album; my mom bought it for me.’ It’s bro code that the Christmas album’s allowed,” Timmons jokingly added.

Let It Snow features 12 Christmas songs such as the title track, “Let It Snow,”  “What Christmas Means To Me,” originally recorded by Stevie Wonder, “Little Saint Nick,” and “Run Rudolph Run.” Each track was personally selected by each member of the band. The full-track listing and song premiere will be released in the coming weeks.

2017 also marks the 20th anniversary of the group’s debut self-titled release. “It’s a special year for us – it’s the 20th anniversary of our first release on Motown Records,”  says Nick. “So, it just seemed like the perfect moment to revisit This Christmas and do a Volume Two.”

All four members have enjoyed other careers outside of music, but love to get back into the studio and sing together. Nick appeared on TV shows both as an actor (The WB’s Charmed and One Tree Hill ) and a host (VH-1’s Big Morning Buzz Live). Drew was crowned season two winner of Dancing With the Stars and has been on Broadway, and both brothers opened Lachey’s Bar (A&E). Timmons joined members of Backstreet Boys and ‘NSYNC for VH-1’s Mission Man Bandand Nick Carter’s Sci-Fi feature, Dead Seven. Jeffre is involved in various media- and cause-related projects stemming from his foray into politics as a mayoral candidate of Cincinnati.

Gamers and Their Avatars Compete to be the Lord of LEGENDALE at The Human Race Theatre Company

American Premiere of fantasy musical comedy comes alive to open The Race’s 31st Season, September 7 – October 1, 2017 at the Loft Theatre

(Dayton, OH) —The Human Race Theatre Company (HRTC) proudly launches its 2017-2018 Eichelberger Loft Season with the American Premiere production of Legendale. Created by Andrea Daly (music and story) and Jeff Bienstock (words and story), this new musical follows a 30-year-old IT manager named Andy, whose favorite way to escape his miserable job and humdrum life is the online game Legendale. He dreams of victory in its new tournament and winning the grand prize to become “the Lord of Legendale,” but is stuck competing as a lowly milkmaid. When things in the online world suddenly take a strange turn, Andy and his avatar must both discover their inner warrior. A blend of romance, adventure and virtual reality with a pop-infused score, it’s an inspiring tale like no other that’s sure to delight.

John Simpkins (Off-Broadway’s Bloodsong of Love: The Rock and Roll Spaghetti Western, The Bus, ReWrite, The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks), Head of Musical Theatre at Penn State University, returns to direct and choreograph The Human Race’s production of Legendale after helming the world premiere at the Fredericia Teater in Denmark. Resident Artist and Music Director for Wright State University’s Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures Scot Woolley (Crowns, Next to Normal, Tenderly, Harold and Maude among many others for HRTC) is the production’s music director and conducts it seven-member band.

The preview performance of Legendale is Thursday, September 7. Opening night is Friday, September 8.

Daly and Bienstock began writing Legendale in 2013. That same year, the pair attended a two-week residency at Goodspeed Musicals’ Writers Colony in East Haddam, Connecticut, where the play had a first, informal reading of its first act in February 2014. Its first full-length reading was presented in New York City in November of that same year. In October 2015, HRTC President & Artist Director Kevin Moore attended the National Alliance of Musical Theatre’s (NAMT) Festival of New Works – the highest attended showcase of new musicals in the country. One of the eight new musicals in the festival was Legendale. After seeing a 45-minute presentation from the work in progress, Moore began a dialogue with Daly and Bienstock, asking questions like, “What is your next step for the show?” and “What do you need?” Their answer was clear – time to work on the show and the ability to see and hear it. After Legendale progressed through a series of 29-hour workshops in New York and Los Angeles (Moore attended two New York readings), The Human Race, Denmark’s Fredericia Teater and the writers presented at the 2016 NAMT Fall Conference about their collaboration and the trajectory of the show. HRTC hosted an extended two-week workshop in Dayton in December 2016, where Legendale received a staged reading, to help the writers prepare for their March 2017 world premiere at the Fredericia. After receiving great critical and audience acclaim in Denmark, the musical now returns with its writers in tow to The Human Race, where it will use some technical and artistic elements from its Danish production.

“I’m beyond excited to be producing this show,” says Moore. “There is nothing else like it on the American musical scene today.” While the plot centers around online gamers and their avatars, he is confident about Legendale’s appeal to a much larger audience. “Jeff and Andrea have created this unique virtual world, for sure. But you don’t have to know anything about video games or supernatural warriors to relate. The story’s true theme is about the power of fantasy, and it speaks clearly to anyone who has ever dared to dream.”

CAST AND DESIGN TEAM
Legendale’s cast consists of only eight performers, most of whom will be new to Human Race audiences. Featured in the lead role of “Andy” is Max Crumm, who television viewers will remember as a contestant on the NBC competition series Grease: You’re the One That I Want!, eventually winning the role of “Danny Zuko” for the 2007 Broadway revival of Grease. Crumm’s other New York credits include Disaster! on Broadway and The Fantasticks and Brooklyn Crush Off-Broadway. Abby Church (Broadway’s How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and White Christmas) is “Andy’s” Legendale avatar, “Zelayna/Cow Maiden.” Rachel Flynn (Off-Broadway’s Heathers, the Musical) plays “Beth” and “Dr. Gamer.” Jesse Sharp (Chasing Rainbows at Goodspeed Musicals, tours of The Addams Family, Elf and Grease) is making his first appearance at The Human Race in the role of Legendale creator “Jansen.” Green Bay, Wisconsin native Travis Mitchell (tours of Rock of Ages, Elf, Catch Me If You Can) is “Andy’s” overbearing boss, “Steve.” Recent Wright State University graduate Nathan Robert Pecchia (HRTC’s Sweeney Todd and Spamalot! at Short North Stage) returns to the Loft as gamer “Sir Sarcasm.” Wright State University students Cody Westbrook and Colin Hodgkin round out the cast as gamers “Fanboy” and “Newbie.”

Scenic designer Michael Schweikardt (Off-Broadway’s The Bus, Gates of Gold and The Black Suits) makes his HRTC debut, tasked with merging Legendale’s virtual realm and the real world on the Loft Theatre’s thrust stage. Costume designer Ayn Kaethchen Wood (HRTC’s The Glass Menagerie and Under a Red Moon) combines existing costume pieces from the Fredericia production with new elements to outfit both humans and avatars. New York designer David Bengali (The Last Ship, Dear Evan Hansen and Amélie on Broadway) serves as the projections designer. Human Race Resident Artists John Rensel (lighting designer) and Jay Brunner (sound designer) round out the design team.

Biographies on the cast and creative team can be found on The Human Race Theatre Company’s website.

The Human Race Theatre Company’s production of Legendale is sponsored by the New Works Fund, the Mary H. Kittredge Fund and Beth and Alan Schaeffer.
