CINCINNATI, OH—The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) presents nine eclectic and electrifying productions as part of its 150th Anniversary Studio Series of Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre and Opera. This annual series of performing and media arts events features CCM’s acclaimed “stars of tomorrow” in a collection of scaled-down stagings set in the Cohen Family Studio Theater and other intimate performance spaces.

The 2017-18 series opens in October with the musical revue Sondheim on Sondheim, which showcases the songs of legendary musical theatre composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim. In November, CCM proudly presents The Earth is Flat, a touching coming-of-age story written by CCM alumnus Todd Almond (BM, 1999) and set in UC’s Calhoun Hall. November also sees the return of the 48-Hour Film Festival, which showcases 10 student-created short films produced over the course of a single weekend.

The series continues in early 2018 with productions of the operas Trouble in Tahiti, The Telephone, Tale for a Deaf Ear and Ariodante. CCM’s popular Dance Student Choreographers’ Showcase and TRANSMIGRATION Festival of Student-Created New Works both return in March. The 150th Anniversary Studio Series concludes in Spring 2018 with the unconventional and moving musical drama The Theory of Relativity (directed and choreographed by CCM alumna Katie Johannigman) and the debut of an original 60-minute play created by CCM Acting for the 71st Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Studio Series is just one part of the yearlong CCM Sesquicentennial Celebration, which includes world premieres, guest artist performances, a series of off-campus concerts and a one-of-a-kind alumni showcase event. For an initial overview of CCM’s 150th anniversary programming, please visit http://ccm.uc.edu/about/villagenews/notations-ovations/sesquicentennial-celebration.

The complete 2017-18 Studio Series lineup is listed below. Titles and dates are subject to change.

Far from the typical song cycle, Sondheim on Sondheim has massive theatrical potency, as well as inarguable staying power. The CCM Opera d’arte Series of undergraduate productions proudly presents a triple bill of one-act American operas! Featured works include Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, a one-act opera that candidly portrays the troubled marriage of a young suburban couple. Dayton Native’s World Premiere MR. JOY Comes to Playhouse Sept. 23

MR. JOY reflects on the power of maintaining hope and faith through tragedy

CINCINNATI—Dayton native Daniel Beaty’s inspiring play MR. JOY will run from Sept. 23 through Oct. 22 at the Shelterhouse Theatre. In this contemporary drama, a single actress plays all nine characters, whose stories remind us of the power of community.

MR. JOY tells the compelling tale of a Chinese shoe-shop owner in Harlem who falls victim to a sudden and violent attack. Though the audience never meets Mr. Joy, they meet nine neighbors and area residents affected by the tragedy.

Beaty drew inspiration for the stage drama from real-life experiences. While living in New York as a struggling actor and artist, he used to take his shoes to a Chinese-American shop owner for repairs.

“He worked magic,” Beaty says. “I’d take my one pair of fancy, beat-up shoes into his shop, and they’d come out like new. One morning I woke up and the shop was boarded up and there was caution tape around the outside. I asked my neighbors what happened and people said, ‘You know, we think somebody attacked him.’ I never saw anything in the newspaper but it lived with me for a lot of years. I eventually wrote this play that asks the question, ‘What happened to Mr. Joy?’”

Beaty sets out to answer that question through the lens of characters who have different worldviews and personal experiences. In this way, Beaty invites the audience to explore the idea of how individuals are connected in the face of social and cultural forces.

“Most of my work deals with themes of race and class in America, and this was a Chinese-American man who had a shoe repair shop for many years in a largely African-American neighborhood,” says Beaty. “The possibility and the gift of artistry is to put those ideas in flesh and blood, in a character that’s dimensional in human form, and then create a well-crafted story that has humor, that has a lot of humanity, that sees the characters’ relationships with one another, that sees the characters fighting to overcome obstacles.”

All nine characters are portrayed poignantly by Debra Walton, whom audiences will remember from Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park productions Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Beehive. Skillfully and stirringly, Walton portrays adolescents and adults who span the spectrum of age, gender, ethnicity, class and identity.

Directed by Nicole Watson, MR. JOY weaves a sense of mystery into a series of personal narratives that lead up to understanding exactly what happened to the beloved community member. MR. JOY reminds us that there are always invisible ties that bind us together.

Beaty’s work returns to the Playhouse after he wrote and performed Through the Night in 2012. He is also a singer, filmmaker, poet, performance artist and activist who uses art as a tool for healing and social transformation.

Opening Sept. 28 (with public previews starting on Sept. 23), the production runs at the Shelterhouse Theatre at the Playhouse through Oct. 22.

TICKETS
Prices for MR. JOY start at $35 depending on seat location and performance day and are subject to change. Tickets for teens and students are $30. Student tickets are $15 on the day of the show. Sunday is College Night, with tickets to all 7 p.m. performances just $10. OTRimprov Presents 4th Annual Improv Festival of Cincinnati

OTRi_IF 2017 logo4th Year of Festival features improv veterans from 9 different cities

OTRimprov proudly presents the 4th Annual Improv Festival of Cincinnati (IF Cincy). IF Cincy again features national improv talent from Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, San Diego, Atlanta, Detroit, Nashville, Ann Arbor, and from right here in Cincinnati. The festival runs September 6-10, 2017 at Know Theatre of Cincinnati in Over-the-Rhine.

Headlining the festival are:

  • Heyday comprised of veteran improvisors seen with Second City, Upright Citizens Brigade, LA, Westside Comedy Theatre, and a current cast member on Comedy Central’s Drunk History.
  • Big Ol’ Show featuring Amber Nash, best known for her role as Pam Poovey on the Emmy winning animated show Archer and Matt Horgan, the Associate Artistic Director at Dad’s Garage in Atlanta.
  • Matt Damon Improv featuring all women of color, their shows invite a special guest white male improv veteran who can only speak when repeating things the women of Matt Damon Improv have already said in the show – forcing them to really listen and take a baby step in a woman of color’s shoes. They have performed at many Chicago theaters and the Chicago Improv Festival (CIF)

IF Cincy makes its home at Know Theatre of Cincinnati again this year thanks to Know Theatre’s Jackson Street Market, which also fostered OTRimprov’s success in establishing a sustainable, professional improv company offering a variety of shows, corporate training, and classes.

Last year’s festival saw an increase in representation of diverse voices and perspectives on stage. The trend continues this year with women representing half of the performers in the festival as well as troupes comprised entirely of women or people of color. The producers of the festival chose to accept submissions for this year’s festival and expressly sought out diverse groups. “We know how important representation is on the stage. And it’s working: last year we highlighted women on our stage and in our classes right now, around 50% of our students are women. We want to make sure we are sustaining and working to increase our diversity. By highlighting some incredibly talented improvisors who also are women and people of color, we hope we can diversify
our audience and continue to diversify the improv performers here in Cincinnati ,” says Kat Smith, co-director of OTRimprov.

National improv performers traveling to Cincinnati are Heyday (Los Angeles), Matt Damon Improv (Chicago), Pick and Roll (San Diego), Geisha Gravy (New York City), Red Pill Players (Atlanta), Big Ol’ Show (Atlanta), Lady Parts Detroit (Detroit), Brother Jacokes (Detroit), Edith Head (Los Angeles, Nashville, Cincinnati), and League of Pointless Improvisors (Ann Arbor).

Cincinnati’s improv scene has exploded in the past few years and more and more groups
performing regularly around the city. We are proud to showcase this growth and wealth of local talent. Cincinnati troupes joining the line-up are producer OTRimprov, Two Sketchy Dames, Highly Improvable, Family Bunker, …and then cannibalism, Killer B’s, Hot MIC, Act One, and CS6001.

Many of the performers taking the stage in the evening will also be hosting workshops over theweekend, giving Cincinnatians a rare opportunity to take classes from the impressive and diverse range of visiting national talent. Workshops will be offered by: Members of Heyday will teach their take on The Harold, a classic improv long-form piece; Matt Horgan of Big Ol’ Show will focus on giving students the tools to consistently tell solid, effective stories in 3-5 minutes; Yoshee Sodiq of Red Pill Players students will leave his workshop with practical things you can do to play at a performance based level and have audience wanting more; Members of Matt Damon Improv will lead workshop participants through exercises and coached scenes that will help improvisers recognize their character status habits, grow within the scene, and empower their character; Edith
Head will help students in committing to the character. Including a extended town-hall style meeting in character, this will be a great way to learn new skills.

Passes are available for taking in multiple evenings of improv, whether you want one, two, or three, four, or FIVE days of improv. The All Access Pass allows entry to all performances Wednesday – Sunday for $90, the Weekend Pass allows entry on Friday and Saturday evening’s performances and Sunday’s matinee for $75, and a One Night Pass is available for entry on either Friday or Saturday evening for $35.

Committing to the Character
Led by Nathan Ray Clark of Edith Head
Sunday September 10th
10am – 1pm
Know Theatre Mainstage
As improvisers, we all have the tendency to play the same characters over and over. While great in developing specific characters, the drawback is we limit ourselves creatively by playing it safe. The objective of my workshop is to get improvisers to focus on exploring, creating, and committing to original characters on stage. First hour, the students will space walk with specific instructions through movement, sound, and other unique ways in order to cultivate/create new characters. Halfway through the workshop the improvisers will create a character inspired by a friend or loved one. Once they’ve embodied that character we hold a town hall meeting with them for roughly 30-45 min, expecting them to hold their character the entire time. Throughout the town hall meeting they’ll be interacting with each other, and giving their opinions on a wide variety of topics (from politics to pop culture). After the meeting is over everyone will drop their character and discuss their experiences. Note: this is 3 hour workshop.

About the Artists
(Troupes listed alphabetically. For lineup, see above.)

Act One (Cincinnati, OH)
Matthew Jent and Tracy Connor will perform an improvised one act play in which the opening and closing night happen at the same performance. This indie duo is patient, confident, emotionally resonant, and delightfully funny.

Big Ol’ Show (Atlanta, GA)
From deep in the heart of Georgia and Atlanta’s Dad’s Garage Theatre, comes Big Ol’ Show! Starring Amber Nash (the voice of Pam Poovey in FX’s Archer) and Matt Horgan (Associate Artistic Director at Dad’s), Big Ol Show is a completely improvised antebellum tale of lust and love during the American Civil War! Marriages will be forbidden, bodices will be torn open, mint juleps will be sipped, mustaches twirled, cannons fired and Yankees shot! It’s like “Gone With The Wind”, but three times as long. To give the show an even greater ring of authenticity, Amber Nash is a Georgia native while Matt Horgan hails from Ohio. Xavier University Theatre Opens Season with World Premiere Drama CANNIBAL GALAXY: A LOVE STORY

XU_logo(CINCINNATI, Aug. 21, 2017) — Xavier University Theatre launches its 2017-18 theatre season with a world premiere play about the relationship between science, spirituality and violence and the struggles we face to find meaning and beauty in a chaotic world.

Performances for Charise Greene’s CANNIBAL GALAXY: A LOVE STORY will take place Sept. 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Xavier’s Gallagher Student Center Theater.

CANNIBAL GALAXY focuses on a group of Washington, D.C., Science Museum employees confronting a random act of workplace violence during an otherwise typical workday. While trying to move on and face their vulnerabilities in a post-traumatic environment, they’re also fighting to rediscover their identities, search for connections and make sense of the senseless world around them.

Xavier University Theatre will present the first full-scale production of CANNIBAL GALAXY, though students already have a history with the show. In 2015, as part of a professional collaboration with off-Broadway’s Fault Line Theatre, Xavier students participated in a local workshop of the script. According to Greene, “Being with the students’ voices for a week was illuminating. The actors at Xavier taught me so much about the play and led to some wonderful changes that deepened the story.”

Charise Greene was inspired to write CANNIBAL GALAXY following the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. “I visited the Marian Koshland Science Museum in D.C. shortly after hearing the news,” says Greene, “and as I walked through the various exhibits, I was grappling with this impossible event, trying to make sense of the senseless. I rushed off to write 20 pages and then, like most playwrights, I got stuck.

“But then another senseless act of violence happened in our country. And then another … and another. I was working on a television set, and the play started to write itself in my mind. I would rush home at wrap and write more. I think it was part coping mechanism, part love letter to those we have lost to violence as well as mental illness.”

An actor, coach, director and playwright, Charise Greene serves as an associate artist at two New York City theatres, Blessed Unrest and Fault Line Theatre. As an actress, she’s appeared on stage at Signature Theatre, Theatre for the New City, Ensemble Studio Theatre and The Flea Theater. She recently served as a dialect coach for Anne Hathaway
in Grounded at The Public Theater and for Dominic West and Ruth Wilson on the first two seasons of Showtime’s The Affair. She holds an MFA in acting from Brown University/Trinity Rep.

The cast for CANNIBAL GALAXY includes Donald Burns (Vadim), a senior theatre major from Forest Park, Ohio; Cassie Delicath (Jo), a junior theatre major from St. Louis, Missouri; Henry Eden (Chet), a senior theatre major from Jackson, Wyoming; Taylor Maas (Eloise’s Mom), a senior theatre major from Cleves, Ohio; Katie Mitchell (Claire), a senior theatre major from Hyde Park, Ohio; and Hannah Sgambellone (Eloise), a junior theatre major from Lexington, Ohio.

The show is directed by Tiffany Greene. Tiffany Greene earned her MFA from Brown University/Trinity Rep. Her previous directing credits include productions at the New York International Fringe Festival, MCC Theater Youth Company, Hollywood Fringe Festival, The Lark new play development series and Soho Rep Director Lab, as well as assistant credits at Signature Theatre and Dallas Theater Center. She was a finalist for the Drama League Classical Directing Fellowship for Artists of Color in both 2012 and 2013 and is a past participant of the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab and Soho Rep Director Lab.

Other members of the creative team for CANNIBAL GALAXY include Joe Leonard (set designer/technical director); Joe Beumer (lighting designer); Jessica Pitcairn (costume designer); Kelly Markle (props designer); Lily Dennstaedt (sound designer/assistant director); and Stephen Skiles (producer). The stage manager is Emi Suarez. Assistant stage managers are Ellie Conniff and Meaghan Vaders.

Tickets for CANNIBAL GALAXY: A LOVE STORY are available now through the Xavier University Theatre Box Office. Tickets are $17 each for adults and $12 each for students, as well as Xavier faculty and staff. To purchase tickets, visit www.xavier.edu/theatretickets or call 513-745-3939.
