Search for New General Director to Begin Immediately

CINCINNATI, OH—Cincinnati Opera today announced news of a major transition to come in 2020: Patricia K. Beggs, The Harry Fath General Director and CEO, will retire at the close of the company’s 100th anniversary season, after 35 years at the company. A national search for a new general director will begin immediately, to ensure a smooth transition.

“I’ve had a dream job for almost half of my life,” Beggs said. “To go to work at one of the most iconic buildings in the country, to be inspired daily by the glorious music being created in Music Hall, to learn from the best and brightest people who make up the Opera’s staff, Board, Guild, and volunteers, as well as my arts colleagues, and finally to sit in glorious Springer Auditorium on Cincinnati Opera’s opening night, and know that I played a small role in making the magic happen. The best job ever!”

Patty Beggs began her tenure at Cincinnati Opera in 1984 as marketing director, following a successful corporate career. Her creative marketing campaigns helped effect Cincinnati Opera’s remarkable turnaround in attendance in the late 1980s and 1990s, becoming a leading industry standard for new approaches in audience development. She took over management of the company in 1997. Since then, the company’s operating budget has increased from about $4 million in 1997 to $9 million in 2019. Fiscal responsibility has been a hallmark of Beggs’s administration; the company has posted a balanced budget for 21 of those 22 years. Beggs has also led the charge to increase the endowment, which has doubled during her tenure to approximately $30 million. Beggs is committed to developing meaningful partnerships in the community and the belief that collaboration is fundamental to the success of arts organizations.

Cincinnati Opera’s highlights during her tenure are innumerable. The company moved to the Corbett Opera Center, a new, custom-built administrative headquarters in the north wing of Music Hall, in 2005. In 2007, Cincinnati Opera and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music formed the first official program between an opera company and a conservatory in the U.S. with the founding of Opera Fusion. In 2013, Cincinnati Opera launched the Opera Campus initiative, expanding the company’s reach beyond Music Hall and into additional venues in Over-the-Rhine, including Washington Park and the Corbett Theater at The School for Creative and Performing Arts. In the past several years, Cincinnati Opera has presented two world premieres and a U.S. premiere, all to critical acclaim, with three more commissioned new works to premiere in 2019 and 2020.

Beggs has served as treasurer on the national board of OPERA America, and was awarded its national service award, BRAVO, in 2010. In 2008, Beggs and the Opera were honored by the NAACP for their extraordinary efforts in building connections to the African American community. Recognized frequently as a distinguished leader, she was a member of Leadership Cincinnati’s Class XVII, and was named a Cincinnati Regional Chamber of Commerce WE Celebrate Woman of the Year-Non Profit in 2015, Woman of Over-the-Rhine Story of Success in 2007, 2006 YWCA Career Woman of Achievement, Woman of the Year by the Cincinnati Enquirer in 1999, and Woman of Distinction by the Great Rivers Girl Scouts in 1992. She is listed in Marquis Who’s Who in America, and is a member of Cincinnati Women’s Executive Forum and Cincinnati Woman’s Club.

“Patty Beggs has been a pillar of American opera, helping guide our art form and industry into the 21st century with the highest artistic and managerial standards,” said Marc A. Scorca, President & CEO of Opera America, the national service organization for opera companies. “Her passionate dedication to Cincinnati Opera, skill as a general director, commitment to the larger opera community, and unflagging grace have been an inspiration to me personally and a model of informed leadership across our field.  We salute her and thank her for her tremendous service.”

“Patty’s tenure at Cincinnati Opera has been extraordinary,” said Gary T. “Doc” Huffman, President of the Cincinnati Opera Board of Trustees and Chairman and CEO of Ohio National Financial Services. “During her time here, the company has commissioned seven world premieres and presented 33 company premieres, including the U.S. premiere of Another Brick in the Wall, which set a new record for ticket revenue. The endowment has more than doubled. Music Hall is revitalized. And—thanks to Patty—we have one of the most highly regarded teams of senior managers in the opera industry. We will be sad to see Patty leave, but we are profoundly grateful for her work.”

“There’s just no one like her,” said Harry Fath, past President of the Board of Trustees. “She’s devoted, tireless, and forward-thinking. She’s built an amazing company—one of the best opera companies in the nation. While I was President, there wasn’t anyone more delightful to work with than Patty Beggs.”

“ArtsWave salutes Patty Beggs, whose 34-year tenure at Cincinnati Opera has shaped the nation’s second-oldest opera company into also one of its most forward-thinking,” said Alecia Kintner, President & CEO of ArtsWave, the nation’s largest community campaign for the arts. “Patty’s leadership has helped bring boundary-busting projects to life, such as the recent productions of Fellow Travelers and Another Brick in the Wall. Her commitment to inclusion and accessibility has manifested itself in innovative ways, such as Opera Goes to Church and the one-of-a-kind Opera Express mobile theater. Her collaborations with Music Hall neighbors, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Ballet, and her mentoring of smaller groups like concert:nova and ROKCincy, have made for exciting mash-ups across disciplines and inside nontraditional performance spaces. Patty has positioned Cincinnati Opera well for its second century of impact in the Cincinnati region and beyond.”

Evans Mirageas, The Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director of the company since 2005, has renewed his contract through the 2022 season. Mirageas recently stepped down as vice president of artistic planning for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, a position he had held since 2012. Mirageas’s varied career in classical music has included radio production with the nationally renowned WFMT radio station in Chicago, Artistic Administrator to Seiji Ozawa at the Boston Symphony, and Senior Vice President of Artists and Repertoire for the Decca Record Company. In addition, he is an award-winning record producer, lecturer, interviewer, presenter, and awards panelist.

“It is an honor to have the privilege to continue serving Cincinnati Opera through and beyond our 100th anniversary,” said Mirageas. “Our first century established us as the premiere summer venue for grand opera in the USA. Our second century builds on that legacy, and moreover sees us already positioned as a leader in the creation and presentation of new works that thrill audiences here, and what’s more, go on to nationwide fame. Patty Beggs has been so much a part of making this company what it is today; she is our fearless leader and a cherished colleague, and I will miss her dearly.”

Longtime Opera board member Liz Kathman Grubow, Vice President and Managing Creative Director at worldwide brand and innovation consultancy LPK, has been voted President-Elect of the Opera Board of Trustees. Grubow’s contributions to the company began decades ago, when she worked with Patty Beggs on the highly successful marketing campaigns of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Over the past decade, Grubow has been a dedicated supporter of the company’s outreach to young professionals, both through sponsorship of YP events and contributing to the development of a young professional level of Board membership. Grubow will take on the role of President of the Cincinnati Opera Board of Trustees in September 2019, and current Board President Gary T. “Doc” Huffman will step into the role of Chairman.

Founded in 1920, Cincinnati Opera presents a thrilling season of opera every June and July in multiple venues, including the recently renovated historic Music Hall. The company’s repertoire includes beloved classics and contemporary works brought to life by some of the world’s most dynamic performers and creative teams.

Cincinnati Opera’s 2019 Summer Festival runs June 13 through July 28, featuring Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Charles Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet, Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, the world premiere of Blind Injustice by Scott Davenport Richards and David Cote, based on true stories of the Ohio Innocence Project, and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess. Cincinnati Opera’s 2019 Season Presenting Sponsor is Huntington Bank. The 2019 season is also made possible with support from ArtsWave, Ohio Arts Council, Macy’s, The Louise Dieterle Nippert Musical Arts Fund, and many generous individuals, corporations, and foundations.

Cincinnati Opera’s mission is to enrich and connect our community through diverse opera experiences.

Playing Weekends March 30 – April 14

(COVINGTON, KY) – When the beats of a big band start playing it’s hard to keep still. Toes will be tapping along to the music in the Otto M. Budig Theatre during The Carnegie’s production of SWING!, featuring the RL Little Big Band, weekends March 30 – April 14.

High energy beats and fast-paced dance moves are hallmarks of swing music, which exploded out of pre-war Harlem’s hotbed of youth culture and became a worldwide phenomenon. The genre crossed racial and cultural barriers to bring us popular dances like the Lindy Hop, the Jive and more. SWING! celebrates this remarkable diversity to the beat of the most exhilarating songs of the period. But as this enthralling song-and-dance show makes abundantly clear, swing was never a time or place – it has always been a state of mind.

“SWING! is just a really fun way to close out our season,” said Carnegie Theatre Director Maggie Perrino. “It’s a celebration of movement and music that can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages.”

Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, SWING! features popular songs like “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If it Ain’t got that Swing),” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “I’ll be Seeing You,” and “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree.”

Providing the instrumentals for those iconic songs are members of the RL Little Big Band led by Randy Linville.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Announces the 2019-2020 Season at The Otto M. Budig Theater, The Season of the Woman

CSC_logo

Women take center stage in Cincinnati Shakespeare’s new season

CINCINNATI (March 6, 2019)– Cincinnati Shakespeare Company (CSC) announced the titles for its 2019-2020 Season at The Otto M. Budig Theater in an event on March 6.  This season will feature Women, on stage and off, in The Season of the Woman.  CSC’s 2018-2019 Season is generously sponsored by The Otto M. Budig Family Foundation, The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile Jr. Foundation, The Shubert Foundation, Ohio Arts Council, and ArtsWave and all productions will feature Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s Resident Company of Actors.

From June of 1919 to August of 1920, these United States passed and ratified the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. In commemoration of this centennial, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company will shine the spotlight on the Women of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, both onstage and off, as they join organizations across the city to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage with “The Season of the Woman.”

Beginning in July, they will present the Regional Premiere production of Miss Holmes, which adapts the classic mystery series and reimagines the iconic Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson as two women solving crimes in Victorian England. They will examine the relationships of women in politics in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, with the title character re-gendered as a woman. Audiences will watch two women win the day over infamous trickster Falstaff through their own uniquely feminine wits and wiles in Shakespeare’s hilarious comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor set directly in the era of suffrage. And audiences will bear witness to Shakespeare’s searing depiction of both female power and violence against women in his bloodiest tragedy, Titus Andronicus.

Cincinnati Shakespeare is thrilled to welcome female playwrights and female authors to their stage as they present a fresh adaption of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice by Kate Hamill. They will tell the story of a family in turmoil centered on a powerhouse matriarch in the modern classic August: Osage County by Tracy Letts. And they will close the season with the Regional Premiere of the heartwarming story behind the friends who saved William Shakespeare’s plays from disappearance in Book of Will by Lauren Gunderson, the most produced female playwright in America.

CSC will showcase its first commission from a living playwright in over a decade. In 2017, the top two most produced playwrights in America were William Shakespeare and Lauren Gunderson. Producing Artistic Director, Brian Isaac Phillips says, “We can’t ask Will. So we asked Lauren. And she said yes! In 2020, CSC will feature a developmental reading of a brand new play by Lauren Gunderson: a contemporary, female-focused sequel to Shakespeare’s Hamlet.”

And finally during the season, because the passage of the 19th Amendment, while worthy of celebration, did not in fact guarantee voting rights for all, Cincinnati Shakespeare will be presenting All The Way by Robert Schenkkan. Set in the tumultuous 1960s, this modern classic tells story of LBJ’s fight to enact the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company continues to offer audiences great value with affordable, flexible subscriptions that include flexible tickets that can be used in any combination for any performance. Subscription packages start at $284.  All subscriptions are currently on sale now and may be purchased through the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company website http://www.cincyshakes.com or box office by calling 513-381-BARD (2273) ext. 1.  Single tickets for all shows will go on sale Monday April 1, 2019 but the recommended way to get the best price and first access to seats is by becoming a subscriber!  There are also discounts available for students, seniors, local residents, and community partners.

The 2019-2020 “Season of the Woman” at The Otto M. Budig Theater is as follows:

Miss Holmes*
By Christopher M. Walsh
Based on characters by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
July 19 – August 4, 2019

When a young newlywed suspects her husband, a high-ranking investigator at Scotland Yard, has murdered his previous two wives, she fears she has nowhere to turn. But the game is afoot when her case is taken by two fiercely intelligent and independent women who refuse to be contained by the conventions of their time: Miss Sherlock Holmes and her stalwart companion Doctor Dorothy Watson. This clever reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic characters pits its heroes not only against cunning criminal masterminds, but also against the rigid and restrictive rules of Victorian society and the roles in which it is bent on casting them.

August: Osage County
By Tracy Letts
Pride

This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning family drama centers around Violet, the pill-addicted and scathingly manipulative matriarch of the Westin family. When her husband disappears, the rest of the clan is brought together for an unexpected reunion where old wounds are reopened and buried secrets brought to light. By turns vicious, funny, harrowing, and heartbreaking, August: Osage County is an American classic in the making.

CSC_Titus Andronicus 6 promo

William Shakespeare’s
Titus Andronicus
October 11 – November 2, 2019

This Halloween season, murder, mayhem, and mutilation abound, as Shakespeare’s bloodiest play descends on the CSC stage. Roman general Titus Andronicus returns victorious from 10 years of war, his archnemesis Tamora Queen of the Goths in tow and in chains. But when Rome’s rash and impetuous new Emperor decides not only to free her, but to marry her and make her his queen, she embarks upon a remorseless course of revenge. As she and Titus engage in an escalating cycle of violence and vengeance, the body count rises and Rome threatens to fall.

William Shakespeare’s
The Merry Wives of Windsor
November 15 – December 7, 2019

The bawdy, bombastic, and chronically cash-poor Sir John Falstaff has been raising hell in the quiet town of Windsor. When his massive bar tab outstrips his meager means, he needs to raise some cash—and quick. He hatches a plan to seduce two of Windsor’s most wealthily married women, but when they catch wind of his salacious scheme, they turn the tables on their would-be wooer, joining forces to teach him a lesson he won’t soon forget.

Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!)*
By Michael Carleton, James FitzGerald, and John K. Alvarez
December 13 – 29, 2019

CSC’s holiday smash hit Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!) is back! What begins as another annual production of A Christmas Carol soon devolves into a slightly irreverent look at all of our favorite “beloved holiday classics,” including It’s a Wonderful Life, Frosty, Rudolph, Charlie Brown, and more! Three actors (with the help of Santa) send up everything from Dickens to Dr. Seuss in 90+ minutes of high-octane jollity and frivolity.

All the Way
By Robert Schenkkan
January 24 – February 15, 2020

1964. In the wake of an assassination that shook a nation to its core, a larger-than-life figure is propelled into the national spotlight. Faced with civil unrest at home and an unpopular war abroad, accidental president Lyndon B. Johnson struggles at the eleventh hour to get the hotly contested Civil Rights Act across the finish line, and to keep an already divided country from tearing itself apart. Don’t miss the professional regional premiere of this epic political thriller.

Pride and Prejudice
By Kate Hamill
adapted from the novel by Jane Austen
February 28 – March 28, 2020

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” One of the single most beloved stories of all time returns to the CSC stage in a fresh new adaptation which critics are calling “delightfully different,” “fizzy and festive,” and “unlike any adaptation of Jane Austen one has seen before.” Sweepingly romantic, with a good dose of the tongue-in-cheek, Pride and Prejudice follows the affaires de cœur of the witty and willful Elizabeth Bennet, as she finds that the path to true love can lead to the most unexpected of places.

CSC_Hamlet 2 promo

Sara Clark as HAMLET. Photo by Mikki Schaffner Photography.

William Shakespeare’s
Hamlet
April 10 – May 9, 2020

The mysterious death of a king is followed by his brother’s unconventional ascension to the throne. The Queen’s bed casts young Hamlet, usurped heir to the crown, in the role of reluctant avenger. Incest and intrigue, murder and madness, triumph and treachery all combine to paint one of the most complex and compelling portraits in all of English literature.

The Book of Will
By Lauren Gunderson
May 22 – June 14, 2020

This funny, irreverent, and irresistibly charming tale shows us just how close we came to losing the legacy of the most influential writer in Western civilization. Three years after the death of William Shakespeare, John Heminges and Henry Condell, former colleagues and friends of the Bard, contend with egotistical actors, bootleg knockoffs, and a ticking clock to ensure that the First Folio gets published, and that the works of William Shakespeare don’t end up on the trash heap of history.
