PETER AND THE STARCATCHER
NKU School of the Arts
Dec. 2-11
Corbett Theatre [Highland Heights]

Directed by Corrie Danieley

A young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training. They find a mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin containing starstuff, a powerful, celestial substance. The journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure when the ship is taken over by pirates determined to claim the trunk and its treasure. Tony-winning Peter and the Starcatcher is a coming-of-age adventure story about how a nameless orphan became the strange and celebrated hero that is the Boy Who Would Not Grow Up.

MIRACLE AT THE BAYOU BOWL Runs Dec. 2-11

SSP_Miracle at the Bayou Bowl logoMIRACLE AT THE BAYOU BOWL
Sunset Players
Dec. 2-11
The Arts Center at Dunham [West Price Hill]

Written and Directed by Bob Kelley

MIRACLE AT THE BAYOU BOWL takes place on the 24th of December 1959.  One month after the poorest excuse for a hurricane “Mavis” had flooded the area around the Bayou Bowl. The whole town has been without power for weeks. So today, Christmas Eve, a lot is going on. Electricity will be turned on, there is a ceremony to honor Uncle Cletus (of all people) for bravery. The Christmas show which was canceled at the school is being performed here. Crazy Captain Aunt Addie is putting on a wildlife show with her “triplets” and some unexpected guests also drop by.  All the while, Bo Dupree is lost at sea and hopefully Aunt Maddie won’t put a curse on the whole thing. God help us!

THE DINING ROOM Runs Dec. 2-17

TCP_The Dining Room logo

THE DINING ROOM
Tri-County Players
Dec. 2-17
Bell Tower Pavilion [Evendale]

Directed by David Roth

Cast: Rachel Brzezinski, Robert Buchtman, Trisha Coopet, Abby Farmer, Tess Greweling, Brandon Hester, Max Metsch & Clayton Schmohe

The play is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembled daily for breakfast and dinner and for any and all special occasions. The action is a mosaic of interrelated scenes—some funny, some touching, some rueful—which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP. The actors change roles, personalities and ages with virtuoso skill as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, and from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids. Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother’s infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn’t recognize her own sons at Thanksgiving dinner; a daughter, her marriage a shambles, pleads futilely to return home, etc. Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately, into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor and abundant humanity.
