Auditions Announced for WILLY WONKA JR! at Voices of Broadway

VOB_logoVoices of Broadway is excited to announce auditions for their summer 2021 musical, Willy Wonka Jr.!  Please note: this VOB production is open to all ages (per COVID-adjusted licensing agreement with MTI), but emphasis will be on a youth-centered cast. Cast will be selected – not all that audition will be invited to participate.

Voices of Broadway is an educational program, offering a fully-staged theatrical experience, with instruction for both what goes on onstage and backstage. There is a $100 fee to participate. Cast members will receive a show t-shirt (included in the fee). Limited tuition assistance and scholarships are available. $25 minimum deposit as a script fee upon acceptance of role. Cast members keep their script book for this show.

Auditions and rehearsals will be at Firmly Rooted Ministries, 495 Ludlow St, Greendale, IN 47025 and Community Fellowship Church, 505 Bielby Rd, Lawrenceburg, IN.

For your audition, please prepare 16-32 bars of a song that is NOT from the show. Bring your sheet music for the accompanist, as a cappella singing is discouraged. (No pre-recorded tracks, either.) An accompanist will be available.

Auditionees will be asked to read from the script. No dance audition required. No call backs.

Bring a resume, if you have one, and a list of known conflicts from May 17 through July 17.

Production dates are July 8-10.

Show synopsis:

The delicious adventures of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory light up the stage in this captivating adaptation of Roald Dahl’s fantastical tale. Featuring the enchanting songs from the 1971 film, in addition to a host of fun new songs, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR. is a scrumdidilyumptious musical guaranteed to delight everyone’s sweet tooth. Now in the updated Binder format!

Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR. follows enigmatic candy manufacturer Willy Wonka as he stages a contest by hiding golden tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars. Whomever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats, but the fifth is a likeable young lad named Charlie Bucket, who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather. The children must learn to follow Mr. Wonka’s rules in the factory — or suffer the consequences.

Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR. has a flexible cast size with many featured and ensemble roles, including the singing and dancing Oompa Loompas.

The Hughes Project: CCM Partners with High School Students on Light Show

University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) Theatre Design and Production students are working with Hughes STEM High School art students on a light show that will be projected onto Hughes’ beautiful and historic façade on Friday, April 2, 2021. Themed around Afrofuturism and visions of the future, the installation is made possible by the generous support of Prestige AV, Vincent Lighting Systems, Lightborne Communications and UC Forward. 

The collaboration began when CCM Lighting Design and Technology Professor Sharon Huizinga connected with industry colleagues to discuss how to make careers accessible to those who may dream of working in the arts, but don’t know where to begin. She wanted to connect with young students and show them that a career in the arts is possible for a wide variety of personalities and goals.

“I thought, ‘maybe I could ask for access to middle school and high school populations who might not know how many different career options there are in the arts’,” Huizinga says. “I have the sense that people think of theatre and they think of something that doesn’t feel like a viable or secure career choice.”

There are a variety of career paths both on stage and behind-the-scenes that students can explore and pursue.

“Your favorite music artist — or your favorite awards show, play, major sporting event and so on — has whole team of people working to create those shows,” she says. “There are production managers, technical directors, tour managers, lighting directors, sound designers, costume designers, hair and make-up artists, lighting vendors, equipment manufacturers, and more — all who represent a broad spectrum of career options.”

“In lighting design and technology, there are artistic jobs and technical jobs,” she adds. “There are jobs that are freelance, jobs that are salaried and 9-5, jobs that include travel and ones that are fixed in a single place, as well as everything in between.”

Huizinga attended a Cincinnati Public School Board meeting in the summer to pitch a collaboration with CCM and interested public schools. Several people reached out, including Mary Green, the Visual Arts Coordinator at Hughes STEM High School. Hughes’ location at 2515 Clifton Avenue is walking distance from the CCM Village.

“It sounded like a perfect fit, since we are in such close proximity,” Green says. “I had no idea that UC had a Theater Lighting Program, so the partnership is just as exciting for me as it is for my students!”

Since moving to Cincinnati last year and attending the BLINK Festival, I dreamed of doing a project with my students to light up the tower. Little did I know that we would be able to realize such a dream through the UC partnership!”

Green’s 7th grade students are submitting artwork for the CCM students to project onto Hughes STEM High School. The building is “one of the premier examples of Tutor architecture in the country” and boasts a 145-foot Tudor tower designed by J. Walter Stevens that can be seen for miles.

CCM students working on “The Hughes Project” include majors from the college’s Lighting Design and Technology, Technical Direction and Stage Management programs. CCM students will project the artwork onto the building’s 145-foot tower using two 30,000 lumen projectors from Prestige AV and will light the rest of the building with LED lights provided by Vincent Lighting Systems.

The light show is the first step in CCM’s collaboration with Hughes STEM High School. Next year, Huizinga will work with Green to show CCM Idea Lab films to the high school students  to foster continued conversation about the entertainment industry and how it works

“If there are high school or middle school students out there who are potentially interested in the arts, I want to be part of showing them that there is a spectrum of possibilities that they could get involved in and get training in,” she adds. “Whether that is here at CCM or somewhere else, I don’t actually mind, it just improves the industry as a whole to involve everyone who is interested.”

Auditions Announced for ALL-AMERICAN CABARET at Middeltown Lyric Theatre

Here is your opportunity to be in a fun-filled, patriotic, toe-tapping show that celebrates the American Spirit with music, skits and monologues.

We are looking for a variety of 10 – 15 people

Audition Requirements:

  • Singers: Please prepare at least 32 measures of an upbeat song and a ballad. Please have your music marked if possible. An accompanist will be provided. Please no cd’s or acapella
  • Tap Dancers: Bring your shoes, you will be put through a routine
  • Actors: If you do not want to sing and only be considered for a skit or monologue we will provide readings for you.

A face-covering must be worn at all times, except when actively auditioning. Please remain socially distanced as applicable. If you have a fever, please do not attend auditions.

Last Weekend to See In-Person Performances of TCT’s Production of  RAPUNZEL’S HAIRY FAIRY TALE

Cincinnati – In RAPUNZEL’S HAIRY FAIRY TALE, the classic story comes to life in an exciting world-premiere musical adaptation adventure featuring everyone’s favorite long-locked lady in a tower. The show is part of The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s 101st season. 

RAPUNZEL’S HAIRY FAIRY TALE can be seen in-person, via socially distanced, LIVE performances on TCT’s Ralph and Patricia Corbett Showtime Stage on Red Bank Road through this weekend only, ending on Sunday, March 21. The show is also streaming to watch at home or at school through the online service, Broadway On Demand, through May 31. 

All the characters braided in this hairy fairy tale, are comically played by only two actors! Yes, your read that correctly. ONLY TWO ACTORS! This fresh new adaptation will make audiences throw their heads of hair back in laughter and delight as two incredibly talented and versatile actors (Jackson Hurt and Brandi Langford-Sherrill) untangle this hairy fairy tale like you’ve never seen it before! 

In-person seating is limited to 30% (or just 44 seats) per performance.  

The TCT Team has continued to work diligently creating safety protocols to protect the audience, staff, and the actors on stage. As with TCT’s live productions of, THE VELVETEEN RABBIT as well as GARFIELD, THE MUSICAL WITH CATTITUDE, special nose and mouth coverings are again integrated into the costumes by Resident Costume Designer, Jeff Shearer, and pre-recorded vocal amplification is used to reduce the amount of respiration created by actors in the theater during a performance. 

“The health and well-being of our audience, students, and staff have been and always will be our top priority, said Kim Kern, TCT’s Managing Director and CEO. “Last April, we assembled a committee of advisors, health professionals, and community leaders to guide our safety protocols. Through their constant guidance, we continue to receive the most up-to-date information, implement strategies early, and continue to go above and beyond CDC, state, and local guidelines to keep everyone safe, happy, healthy, and creative.”

The national award-winning Cincinnati Young People’s Theatre (CYPT) will hold In-Person auditions for its 40th Anniversary production – JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT – at the Madcap Education Center, 3064 Harrison Avenue on the following dates: April 30, May 1 & 2.

New this year, performers and technicians can also audition via Video Link. Auditions by either method will be equally considered.

All participants must be 13 – 20 years of age at the time of the audition. Rehearsals Begin Tuesday, June 1, 2021. Performances: July 21 – August 8, 2021. Full information below.

  5.  Dress appropriately as you will be required to complete a dance audition.
  6. JOSEPH…DREAMCOAT is a sung-thru musical. You will not read from a script at auditions.
  7. All auditionees must complete all parts of the audition.

Please note: Your video link may include previous shows/roles or your “audition reel” or something you create for this audition. The team will want to see you, hear you sing, and get a sense of how you move. The video links will not be judged on technical quality, but only on your appropriateness to the roles available in the show as demonstrated in the recording.

  • Participation Fee: All participants (on stage and off) are required to pay a participation fee for this summer program. Fee will be due at the first rehearsal: $175.00 for performers (includes costume and show t-shirt); $50.00 for Techies (includes show t-shirt).
  • Please Note: A limited amount of funds are in place to assist with the participation fee. Funds are distributed on a confidential basis. Everyone is encouraged to audition, regardless of ability to pay! Choosing the cast of the show is based upon talent, enthusiasm and availability only. Ability to pay the participation fee is never a factor in casting decisions.

JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
One of the most fantastic shows ever written, Joseph… has TONS of roles, for women and men…GREAT songs… a WILD plot. Plus, the show really is just a dream – allowing for maximum creativity, excitement, crazy characters, hilarious anachronism and one stellar song after another.

A reimagining of the Biblical story of Joseph, the show is told entirely through song. After being betrayed by his brothers, Joseph travels to Egypt, ends up in jail, interprets the dreams of the Pharaoh and eventually forgives and reunites with his family!

The show is full of great songs in a variety of styles, from a parody of French ballads (“Those Canaan Days”), to country-western (“One More Angel in Heaven”) and calypso (“Benjamin Calypso”), along with the unforgettable classics “Any Dream Will Do” and “Close Every Door.”

Women’s Roles: Narrator 1,Narrator 2, Narrator 3, Napthali, Isaachar, Asher, Gad, Judah, Zebulum, Butler, Mrs. Potiphar, Harem (dance ensemble), Jacob’s Wives ensemble, Prisoners ensemble, Guards.

What is CYPT? Cincinnati Young People’s Theatre provides a summer of great experience for performers and techies alike. Many alumni are professional actors, singers, dancers, technicians and musicians. Others are Drama, Opera, Music Theatre, Voice, Music and Broadcasting majors at colleges all over the country. To date, over 2,300 teens have been a part of CYPT!

CYPT has produced 38 years of exciting shows, including: Legally Blonde, Jesus Christ Superstar, Footloose, Children of Eden, Hello Dolly, Anything Goes, The Pajama Game, Godspell, Les Misérables, Crazy For You, The Wedding Singer, Grease, Hairspray, West Side Story, Beauty and the Beast, The Music Man and many more!

CYPT is the recipient of the Post-Corbett Award for Outstanding Arts Organization, plus, the National Recreation and Parks Arts and Humanities Award, and the Ohio State Award for Best Student Program.

CYPT brings together 100 teens each summer, on stage and off. In 2019, participants came from 40 different schools, from all over the Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana region.

CYPT is for you! The teenage performer/techie interested in three things: 1) Theatrical Experience; 2) A Summer project with a difference; 3) A lot of new friends with the same interests.
