Moveable Feast Returns to CCM Village Jan. 20, 2017

The annual benefit event showcases students from UC’s College-Conservatory of Music in an evening of live entertainment and by-the-bite cuisine. This year’s event includes a preview of Broadway’s ‘Anastasia’ with a performance by CCM alumna Christy Altomare.

CCM_logoCINCINNATI, OH—Cincinnati’s premier fundraiser returns in early 2017 when the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) presents its annual “Moveable Feast.”

Hosted by the CCMpower volunteer group of fans, advocates and alumni, this unique benefit event features students from all corners of the college in an evening of live entertainment and by-the-bite cuisine. Funds raised by Moveable Feast enable CCMpower to award student scholarships and grants. The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, 2017.

A stunning showcase of CCM’s world-class performing and media arts programs, Moveable Feast gives guests a chance to sample artistic and culinary delights throughout the college’s state-of-the-art facilities. Attendees roam through the expansive CCM Village at their leisure, socializing and enjoying dinner-by-the-bite while creating their own menu of artistic experiences.

Guests plan their own schedule of 20-minute samplings of student and faculty entertainment, including Jazz, Choral, Musical Theatre, Piano, Opera, Acting, Dance and Orchestra performances, along with tours of CCM’s Electronic Media facilities, Lighting Design labs and other backstage areas.

New for 2017! Each year, CCM’s Moveable Feast provides Cincinnati audiences with an opportunity to see the performing and media arts “stars-of-tomorrow” before they’re famous. This year’s program also features a performance by one of CCM’s acclaimed “Broadway babies,” as alumna Christy Altomare (BFA Musical Theatre, 2008) returns to CCM to provide a preview of her next Broadway role! Recently cast as Anya in the new Broadway musical production of Anastasia, which features music by acclaimed composer and fellow CCM graduate Stephen Flaherty (BM Composition, 1982), Altomare will perform the Oscar-nominated song “Journey to the Past” with the CCM Philharmonia Orchestra as the “opening course” on this year’s artistic menu.

Anastasia’s promotional team will be on campus to film Altomare’s Moveable Feast performance, which will then be used to promote the show’s Broadway run. Anastasia opened to rave reviews at the Hartford Stage; the show comes to Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre on March 23, 2017.

Altomare’s performance kicks off three hours’ worth of fully customizable arts experiences. Cocktails and dinner-by-the-bite provided by Jeff Thomas Catering will be served throughout the evening.

Cincinnati, OH – Theresa Caputo, from TLC’s hit show, Long Island Medium, will be appearing live at the Aronoff Center on Monday, March 27 at 7:30PM. Theresa will share personal stories about her life and explain how her gift works. She will deliver healing messages to audience members and give people comfort knowing that their loved ones who passed are still with them, just in a different way.

Tickets go on-sale Friday December 16 at 10:00AM and can be purchased at cincinnatiarts.org, (513) 621-2787 [ARTS], and the Aronoff Center Ticket Office. Tickets start at $39.75 (plus applicable service charges) and are subject to change. Purchasing a ticket does not guarantee a reading.

“The Experience” brings Theresa face-to-face with her fans, as she lets spirit guide her through the audience. A video display ensures everyone in the venue has an up-close-hands-on experience regardless of seat location.

“The experience isn’t about believing in mediums. It’s about witnessing something life-changing” says Theresa Caputo. “It’s like Long Island Medium live, witnessing first-hand spirit communication.”

The highly-rated show Long Island Medium follows Theresa’s life as a typical Long Island wife and mom with one very big difference…she can communicate with the dead. Since she cannot “turn off” this gift, messages from departed loved ones can come through at any time, which lead to spontaneous readings with those she encounters. The new season of Long Island Medium is scheduled to premiere Sunday, February 19, 2017 on TLC.

Theresa has appeared on such programs as “Jay Leno,” “Jimmy Fallon,” “Steve Harvey,” “Live with Kelly and Michael,” “Dr. Oz,” & “The Today Show.” Theresa’s second book titled “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” was released in September 2014 and debuted at #9 on The New York Times Best Seller List. Her first book titled “There’s More to Life Than This” debuted in the fall of 2013.

Theresa has been a practicing medium for over fifteen years. She helps individuals find closure by delivering healing messages. For Theresa, this is not just her job… this is her life.

CHRISTMAS MINIATURES Presented by Knox Music Series on Dec. 18

knox-church-logoThe Knox Music Series presents “Christmas Miniatures,” a holiday concert of sacred music featuring the 50-voice Knox Choir, Knox Soloists and Orchestra at 4:00pm on Sunday, December 18, at Knox Presbyterian Church, 3400 Michigan Avenue, in Cincinnati’s Hyde Park neighborhood.

The free concert includes Christmas miniature masterworks of J. S. Bach, MarcAntoine Charpentier, Gerald Finzi, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The 90-minute program is framed by two Bach works, opening with three festive movements from his Christmas Oratorio and closing with the three-movement Cantata No. 191 for Christmas Day, Gloria in Excelsis Deo.

Also included in the concert are two works by British composers, the In terra pax of Gerald Finzi, and the Fantasy on Christmas Carols of Ralph Vaughan Williams.

The final work is a sampling of excerpts from the Christmas Midnight Mass of French Baroque composer Charpentier.

As each of the five featured works is less than 15 minutes long, the entire program offers a 90-minute sampler of the best of the German and French Baroque (Bach and Charpentier) contrasted with the lyric works of the Romantic-Early twentieth century British composers (Finzi and Vaughan Williams).

Notes about the five Christmas miniature masterworks:

  • J.S. Bach’s (1685-1750) complete Christmas Oratorio was originally presented in Leipzig, Germany over six days of the 1733-34 ChristmasEpiphany season. The Knox Choir gave the Cincinnati premiere of the complete Oratorio in 1985, the 300th anniversary of the birth of J.S. Bach.
  • British composer Gerald Finzi (1901-1956) set his In terra pax in 1954 for strings, soprano and baritone soloists, and choir on two verses of an English poem Noel: Christmas Eve, 1913 by Robert Bridges. The verses frame St. Luke’s account of the angels’ appearance to the shepherds.
  • British composer Ralph Vaughan William’s (1872-1958) set his Fantasy on Christmas Carols in 1912 for baritone, choir, and orchestra on a series of folk carols collected in Southern England, interspersed with familiar carols.
  • French Baroque composer Marc Antoine Charpentier (1634-1704) set his Christmas Midnight Mass (Messe de Minuit pour Noël) c. 1690 for soloists, choir, and orchestra entirely on eleven well-known folk-like French noëls (carols) most of which are based on dance rhythms.
  • J.S. Bach “borrowed” and reworked three spirited movements from the Gloria section of his own Mass in B Minor to create Cantata 191 Gloria in excelsis for a Christmas morning Leipzig worship service, likely in 1743.

About Knox Church: Knox Presbyterian Church (Presbyterian Church, USA) is a growing, progressive church of approximately 1,100 members in Cincinnati’s Hyde Park neighborhood. The church is known throughout the region for its community outreach and activism, music program, and active, diverse congregation. Worship services are Sundays at 9:15am and 11:00am. Adam Fronczek is Pastor and Head of Staff.

GHOSTS OF WAR: THE TRUE STORY OF A 19-YEAR-OLD GI | Fri., Dec. 9 | Aronoff Center – Jarson-Kaplan Theater

caa_ghosts-of-war-logoCINCINNATI, OH  – The Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) is pleased to present the Griffin Theatre Company’s production of Ghosts of War: The True Story of a 19-Year-Old GI by Ryan Smithson, adapted for the stage by William Massolia, on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 8:00 PM at the Aronoff Center’s intimate Jarson-Kaplan Theater.  The show is part of CAA’S 2016-17 Season.

Tickets are $30 and are on sale now at www.CincinnatiArts.org, (513) 621-ARTS [2787], and the Aronoff Center Ticket Office.  Group discount tickets for 10 or more are available by calling (513) 977-4157.

The Griffin Theatre Company returns to the Aronoff Center for a second year with a show about the impact of war. Ryan Smithson was a typical 16-year-old high-school student until 9/11. “I’d thought about joining the military the moment I saw the towers fall,” he relates in this profoundly moving theatrical production based on Smithson’s acclaimed memoir. Smithson enlisted in the Army Reserve the following year and, a year into the Iraq war, was deployed to an Army engineer unit as a heavy-equipment operator. His poignant, often harrowing account, especially vivid in sensory details, chronicles his experiences in basic training and his tour of duty in Iraq.

“Only after we have been completely destroyed can we begin to find ourselves,” Smithson says of his basic training, offering an unflinchingly honest portrait of the physical and psychological brutality of that experience. His account of his tour of duty in Iraq is no less compelling. He lucidly recounts the intensity of battle and the pain of losing comrades. For Smithson, the war is a source of personal enlightenment, and this one-man play is a remarkable, deeply penetrating exploration of duty, patriotism and sacrifice.

To enhance the theatrical experience, the performance is followed by a post-play discussion.
