Madcap is throwing a murder mystery dinner party for adults. Cincinnati’s favorite puppet company presents A KILLER REVUE, an adult-themed vaudeville show that features plenty of puppets and performers who are ready to kill.

“I’m a huge fan of variety shows and murder mysteries. Think of mixing a spicier version of The Muppet Show with a low stakes game of Clue,” says Dylan Shelton, Artistic Director of Madcap. “Solving a murder with puppets, dinner, and drinks is the perfect way to bring friends and family together.”

Cincinnati Actor’s Studio & Academy Brings THE ALTRUISTS to the Stage

FEB 24, 2018—Tristate audiences are invited to act apathetic towards life while they take in The Altruists by Nicky Silver at Cincinnati Actor’s Studio & Academy 

The Altruists revolves around a dedicated, if disorganized and demented, group of young radicals. These are the kids who protest. They protest arts funding and arms funding. They protest school cutbacks and AIDS cutbacks and welfare cutbacks. They march for gay rights and children’s rights and Women Against Drunk Drivers. But their morality is put to the test one day when Sydney, a shallow, anorexic soap-opera actress, fires a gun into the hulking body of her sleeping boyfriend. Terrified, she looks to her brother, Ronald, the center of this merry band of radicals, for help. Ronald, a social worker, wants to aid his sister, but at the moment he’s consumed with love. The object of his affection? A young runaway prostitute, Lance. It is Ethan, Ronald’s cohort, who points out that they need Sydney—without her money they can do no good in the world. After all, “firebombs don’t grow on trees.” And when Sydney pressures him, revealing her vulnerability and her real affection for the first time, Ronald acquiesces. He makes the ultimate sacrifice, that of his own happiness for the greater good. And this group of altruists frames Lance, never noticing the irony as they head off to protest the unjust outcome of a trial involving a young man who resembles Lance in every way.

This production is directed by Gina Cerimele-Mechley. Cast includes current CASA students: Bella DeJesus, Bettina Ernst, Blake Knauer and Lindsay Wielonski, along with CASA alum Will Forgham, and Olaf Eide. Production includes Jenna Valentine as Asst. Director, Amy Helms & Olivia Cremisio as Stage Managers and Kelly Harper as Dramaturg.

Performances run March 2nd, 3rd, 9th & 10th at 7:30PM, March 4th & 11th at 2:30PM. All performances will take place at Essex Studios, 2511 Essex Pl, Cincinnati, Ohio 45206. Anderson Theatre’s JANE EYRE Reflects Modern Issues

“We always want our shows to be relevant to the students lives,” says Anderson Theatre Director Hannah Linser-Wilder, “and I chose ‘Jane Eyre’ because it speaks to issues of female empowerment that we are still dealing with today.” Anderson Theatre’s Winter Play, “Jane Eyre,” opens on February 23 and runs through the 25th. Incorporating dance and shadow-box lighting techniques, it ties the original story to the current day.

The play was adapted from the classic Charlotte Brontë novel by playwright Polly Teal. Ms. Linser-Wilder says, “I searched a long time for the right adaptation of this story I love. It is too easy to make it just about romance or religion. Teal’s version focuses on what I think is important—the life journey of Jane herself, and the reality of what the world was like before feminism existed.”

“It is very relevant for today,” says Junior Hailey Mauk, who plays Jane. “Women can still struggle to explain how they feel, and be told what they are supposed to feel and when to feel it.”

The character of Bertha, played by Senior Megan Goodlett, is onstage throughout the play, reacting to Jane’s experience through dance. Ms. Mauk explains, “Dance helps the audience to understand what Jane is thinking when she can’t express her own feelings.”

“We are all are aware of the issues in the news,” says Ms. Linser-Wilder, “but to really understand them I think it is important to take a step back and look at where we started.”

Sophomore Caitlin Walsh plays Mrs. Fairfax, who she says, “serves as a way to remind Jane of the patriarchal society she lives in. Where Jane seeks some sort of change, Mrs. Fairfax would rather have things stay the same. I find it interesting how many Mrs. Fairfaxes I see in my own life; a lot of people around me prefer to stay on the fence about current events. While they don’t directly oppose it, they aren’t exactly for it, either.”

In contrast, Sophomore Sarah Amrine says “My character, Mary Rivers, and her sister Diana serve as role models of single but independent women, which was not common in this time period.” She believes this is another way that “this show is still very relevant for audiences in modern times.”

“This show is powerful for everyone,” adds Ms. Walsh. “There’s romance, action, inner turmoil, and so much more than meets the eye. It encourages people to fight for what they believe in. Working on this show has been incredible for me. I’ve had the chance to look at the world from not just my own, new viewpoint, but from those of other actors and their characters alike.”

Set in a department store, four women meet while shopping for a black lace bra at a lingerie sale. After noticing similarities among one another, the cast jokes about their woeful hot flashes, mood swings, wrinkles, weight gain, and much more. These women form a sisterhood and unique bond with the entire audience as they rejoice in celebrating that menopause is no longer “The Silent Passage.” 

Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, Menopause The Musical® was created as a celebration of women who find themselves at any stage of “The Change.” The laughter-filled 90-minute production gets audience members out of their seats and singing along to parodies from classic pop songs of the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s.

Miami University Department of Music Presents GHOST STORIES

Music inspiring a feast for the senses

Miami University Department of Music presents Ghost Stories, an evening featuring two operas including Gustav Holst’s SAVITRI, and THE MEDIUM, by Gian Carlo Menotti. Performances are March 1, 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Gates-Abegglen Theatre in the Center for Performing Arts.

The production features a cast of Miami student vocalists, with stage direction by Leland Kimball, an award-winning visiting artist who previously directed Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring at Miami in 2014.

SAVITRI and THE MEDIUM were written in close proximity to two catastrophic world wars and the omnipresence of death accompanying them. Holst’s opera premiered in 1916, and THE MEDIUM reached the stage and even television right after WWII. Menotti was inspired by a real-life seance he attended in 1936 near Salzburg, Austria, where a baroness sought to contact her dead daughter, Doodly.

“Curiosity about life after death and the possibility of “other realities” have long sparked our collective imagination,” said Leland Kimball. “Music lends itself to portraying sensations that cannot be seen or touched,” he said.

Music direction is by Benjamin Smolder, associate professor of music and director of the opera program at Miami University. Smolder also serves as the National Director for the Schmidt Youth Vocal Competition.

The production team includes Lisa Hasson, vocal coach; Rob Holland, lighting design; Issac Ramsey (’06), set design; Joy Galbraith, costume design; and Alex Lusht, sound design.

The William E. Schmidt Foundation serves as sponsor for GHOST STORIES as well as the season sponsor for the Miami Opera program.
