Auditions Announced for THE DINING ROOM at Mason Community Players

MCP_sm logoMason Community Players is holding auditions for A.R. Gurney’s THE DINING ROOM.

The audition dates are Sunday, January 8th, from 2:00 to 6:00pm, and Tuesday, January 10th, from 7:00 to 9:30pm  at the Mason Community Playhouse, 5529 Mason Road in Mason.

The audition will consist of group readings from the script. You will be auditioning to be cast as a member of the ensemble. Each actor will have several roles.

Please fill out and submit the form at this link, https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1YWdedGsKYbPuXqJIULTHf7bWpPBk3-V_mTKdM7j2Wfs/viewform?ts=63929382&edit_requested=true, to secure your audition slot. If you are unable to make these audition times or have any questions please contact the director, Gail Rudolph, gfrudolph@gmail.com.

The performance dates are May 4th, 6th, 11th, 12th, and 13th at 8pm  and  May 7th at 2pm. There will be NO performance on May 5th.

Rehearsals will be 4 nights a week (typically Monday-Thursday), with possible Sundays, as needed. Due to the nature of the show and the roles that a cast member may be asked to fill, an actor may not need to be there every night.

THE DINING ROOM by A.R. Gurney is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembled daily for breakfast and dinner and for any and all special occasions. The action is a mosaic of interrelated scenes—some funny, some touching, some rueful—which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP.

The actors change roles, personalities, and ages with virtuoso skill, as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, and from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids.

Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother’s infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn’t recognize her own sons at Thanksgiving dinner; a daughter, her marriage a shambles, pleads futilely to return home, etc. Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately, into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor and abundant humanity.

A complete list of all of the nearly 60 characters that will be portrayed in the show, can be accessed at this link, https://www.masonplayers.org/j30/index.php/2-uncategorised/164-page-125 .
