The Carnegie Hosts AMERICAN IDIOT Reunion on June 5

TC_American IdiotCast Reunites for One Night Only Saturday, June 5

COVINGTON, KY – The music still rocks. The lyrics still have meaning … And in the wake of the world today, it’s the perfect time to embrace Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT.

The original cast of The Carnegie’s production of AMERICAN IDIOT will reunite for one night only on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 8:00 p.m. Originally brought to life to kick off The Carnegie’s 2019-20 theatre season, proceeds from the AMERICAN IDIOT reunion will benefit local performers and crew members affected by the COVID-19 pandemic through The Carnegie’s Creative Disruption Committee (The Carnegie CDC). Tickets are $15.

“AMERICAN IDIOT is one of the most exciting, fun and popular productions we have done in recent memory. With this special one night only production, we’re offering a mini rock and roll experience with a bit of escapism – at a time when some need it most,” said Maggie Perrino, Theater Director for The Carnegie. “With so many of us reminiscing about and looking forward to better days, this show is perfect in the way it reflects the angst and struggle many of us are feeling today.”

A two-time Tony Award-winning musical based on the Green Day’s Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum album of the same name, AMERICAN IDIOT follows three disaffected young men living in suburbia, who have dreams of a different life in the city. This one night only reunion show will feature some of the numbers from the original show including songs from the “American Idiot” album, as well as others from Green Day.

The Carnegie’s special one night only reunion show of Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT starts with a happy hour with the cast at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2021 with the show to follow at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased through The Carnegie Box Office, Tuesday–Friday noon to 5 p.m., in person or by phone at (859) 957-1940 or online at www.thecarnegie.com. Patrons seeking group or student tickets should call to arrange.

CONTENT ADVISORY: Production includes adult themes and language. Not appropriate for children under 13.

The Carnegie’s 2020-21 Theatre Series is presented by the Otto M. Budig Family Foundation. Support for The Carnegie Creative Disruption Committee programming series is provided by the John A. Schroth Family Charitable Trust.

BRO’KIN RIVER Available May 28-30

SLCG_Brokin RiverBRO’KIN RIVER
Sparklight Creative Group
May 28-30
[Online]

Directed by Darnell Pierre Benjamin

Bro’Kin RIVER is an original 60-minute stage play, written by K.A. Simpson and based on the true story of Margaret Garner, a Northern Kentucky slave who escaped from her plantation. Upon recapture, she took the life of her child instead of seeing her forced back into slavery.

Opening on Garner’s 1856 Cincinnati trial, Garner is transcended to present day, entering on the day after the murder of George Floyd. As Garner comes to terms with her sudden travel through time to the precipice of the Black Lives Matter Movement, her character opens our eyes to the racism of the past, and how modern-day implicit-bias practices are not too far removed from that time.

This project is sponsored in part by ArtsWave through its “Truth & Reconciliation” grant.

Live Performances are SOLD OUT.

Grapes Battle for Supremacy at Cincy Fringe in PLANET OF THE GRAPES LIVE – An Epic Sci-Fi Toy Theater Experience

Basic RGBPLANET EARTH – PLANET OF THE GRAPES LIVE is pandemic performance pioneer Peter Michael Marino’s internationally acclaimed comedic homage that takes audiences of all ages on an epic, 60-minute adventure fusing the Victorian era’s Toy Theater movement with the 1968 Charlton Heston/Rod Serling classic, “Planet of the Apes.” Digital performances for Cincy Fringe play live from New York June 5-18, 2021.

In PLANET OF THE GRAPES LIVE, an astronaut crew crash-lands on an unfamiliar planet in the distant future and are enslaved by a society where grapes have evolved into speaking creatures with human-like intelligence. The original “Planet of the Apes” is credited as one of the most groundbreaking science fiction films of all time. The film’s themes of science vs. religion, biased class systems, and mankind’s self-perceived entitlement to everything on Earth strongly resonated with Marino who peppers the script with excavated passages from co-screenwriter Rod Serling’s original screenplays.

What is Toy Theater? The early 18th century ushered in Europe’s Toy Theater movement, where adults and children assembled mass-produced paper replicas of over 300 popular plays that included the script, stage, scenery, and characters. These DIY kits were sold at the concession stands of opera houses, playhouses, and vaudeville theaters to be performed for family members and guests. Toy Theater literally brought theater into homes.

Since the pandemic began in March 2020, Marino has presented over 100 performances of his interactive, digital live shows “Show Up, Kids!” and “Desperately Seeking the Exit” which were nominated for “Best Zoom Show Performed in Real Time” (BroadwayWorld), and “Outstanding Achievement In An Individual Performance” (No Proscenium). Marino was named “2021 Creative of the Year” by the Young-Howze Theatre Awards.

GROOVY!
A MUSICAL COMEDY TRUIBUTE TO THE 1960S
Book by Tim Kelly; Music and Lyrics by Bill Francoeur

In GROOVY! you will celebrate the hippies and flower children of the 60’s. Three individuals decide to throw a Music, Beads and Flowers Celebration. A popular singing group, The Lemon Bugs, love the idea and donate their talent. In no time, crazily painted buses, motorbikes, and caravans begin arriving at the Apple farm, site of the festival. Everything going well until an individual who detests the “love generation” arrives and wants it shut down. In addition, 2 music promoters arrive and offer the Lemon Bugs a deal they can’t refuse if they skip the celebration.  Crazy characters, such as:

  • California Cowabunga-surfer
  • Hippie Girl with Flute- thinks she is the Pied piper.
  • London fashion designer- plans to release a line of flower power clothing.
  • Flowers, Beads, Buttons, Tie-dyed shirts, bell-bottom pants, motorcycle jackets, etc.  60’s style songs: Power to the People, anything is Possible, Lemon Bugs in a Lemon-Airo-Plane, Brothers and Sisters, Groovy.

Its fast and funky and it’s the best celebration in town. What a show to encourage all of us to come back together and enjoy each other with music, drama and dance.
