In his first published play, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. finds a powerful vehicle for his tragicomical imagination. When the great, presumed-dead, adventure-hunter Harold Ryan unexpectedly returns after eight years—on his birthday!—his wife is aghast and his son is enchanted. Vonnegut bakes up a birthday cake of phony heroes and male swagger, frosted with farce in “a simple-minded play about men who enjoy killing—and those who don’t.”
