Walnut Hills High School Theatre Department Brings Four Performances to One Stage in A Student Directed One Act Festival

“We’re all mad here”

You won’t want to miss Walnut Hills High School Theatre Department’s very first Student Directed One Act Festival, with two junior high plays: ALICE adapted by Lindsay Price from the novel by Lewis Carroll, & SUPERHEROES: WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY by Ian McWethy; and two senior high plays: TERMINAL LUCIDITY: A DADA INSPIRED FEMINIST SCREAM by Amy Bernstein, & THE ACTOR’S NIGHTMARE by Christopher Durang. Each of the four plays will run with two performances in the Rick Steiner Black Box Theater.

WHHS One Act press-AliceALICE Show Synopsis:

A caterpillar gives advice, the Mad Hatter and March Hare are always at tea time, and the Queen of Hearts continually cries, “Off with her head!” The Cheshire Cat says everyone in Wonderland is mad, and therefore Alice must be too. Has Alice lost her head? Only the Cheshire Cat knows for sure.

WHHS One Act press-Actor's NightmareTHE ACTOR’S NIGHTMARE Show Synopsis:
Having casually wandered onstage, George is informed that one of the actors, Eddie, has been in an auto accident and he must replace him immediately. Apparently, no one is sure of what play is being performed but George (costumed as Hamlet) seems to find himself in the middle of a scene from Private Lives, surrounded by such luminaries as Sarah Siddons, Dame Ellen Terry, and Henry Irving. As he fumbles through one missed cue after another the other actors shift to Hamlet, then a play by Samuel Beckett, and then a climactic scene from what might well be A Man for All Seasons—by which time the disconcerted George has lost all sense of contact with his fellow performers.

Directed by Talia Raider-Roth
Stage Manager: Hannah Wardlow

Featuring:
Allison Robertson as George Spelvin, Christina Picklo as Sarah Siddons, Lily Canter as Dame Ellen Terry, Colby James as Meg, Ella Vaughn as Executioner, and Jackson Prus as Henry Irving.

EARTH AND SKY is about would-be poet and part-time librarian Sara McKeon, whose lover of ten weeks, David Ames, is found dead one hot August morning in the city of Chicago. It appears that David may have been involved in illicit activities, including kidnapping, rape, and murder. Sara begins her own investigation of the crime and is led deeper and deeper through the urban labyrinth into the contemporary underworld. As the detective story moves forward in time, scenes from the love affair take us back to the moment when Sara and David first met. The plots converge, and Sara finds herself face to face with David’s murderer.

2 PIANOS, 4 HANDS Quick Review

2 PIANOS, 4 HANDS presented by Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park through Jan. 5. I attended the opening night performance.

“How do I get to Carnegie Hall?”
“Practice.”

In 2 PIANOS, 4 HANDS, the story follows two classical pianists from their beginning lessons through their interviews to join prestigious college music programs. Along the way we meet frustrated teachers, domineering parents and exacting college interviewers.

The two actors (Jefferson McDonald as Ted and Matthew McGloin as Richard) are talented pianists and performers with great comic timing. The duo enjoy a fun rapport and slip into multiple characters as easily as they slide behind the piano. The comedy hits home even more strongly for anyone who has taken music lessons.

Tom Frey does double duty as director and music director for the show, keeping the pacing strong between the short scenes and the musical performances. With seating on four sides, the set is simply two angled Steinway pianos. James Sale’s colorful lighting design sets the mood and defines the transitions between the multiple vignettes.

Thank you Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park for an enjoyable evening of laughter and classical music.

My rating: 4.5 out of 5.
