I SHALL NOT BE MOVED and YOUR NEGRO TOUR GUIDE Runs April 9-May 7

ETC_I Shall Not Be Moved and Your Negro Tour Guide promoI SHALL NOT BE MOVED and YOUR NEGRO TOUR GUIDE
Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati
April 9-May 7
[Over-the-Rhine]

The riveting play I Shall Not Be Moved is by Cincinnati native and emerging young playwright Isaiah Reaves. This one-woman show thrillingly recounts the story of Reaves’s grandmother, nationally recognized Civil Rights pioneer Betty Daniels Rosemond and her beautiful, horrifying, and trailblazing journey through the American South as one of the first Freedom Riders during the 1960s. Audiences far and wide will experience the internal conflicts and joys of a dark-skinned Black woman’s fearless battle for equity and equality. Please note: after this performance concludes (approximate run time is 1 hour), there will be an intermission after which Your Negro Tour Guide will be performed. No additional ticket is required.

Written by Isaiah Reaves
Directed by Torie Wiggins
Featuring Samantha Russell as Betty

The updated one-woman stage adaptation of Your Negro Tour Guide draws heavily from columns and National Public Radio commentaries collected in Kathy Y. Wilson’s book, Your Negro Tour Guide: Truths in Black & White based on her former CityBeat column. Throwing a glaring light on misguided notions of natural Black beauty, Black homophobia, intra-racial bigotry, and other cultural stereotypes, this play allows us, once and for all, to laugh at every secret we’ve held against and sideways glance we’ve cast at “The Other,” whoever they happen to be. Please note: this performance will begin after the intermission that follows I Shall Not Be Moved. No additional ticket is required.

Content warning: This production contains mature language and content, including themes of racism and racial slurs, physical assault, sexual identity, homophobia, and misogyny.

MOVING THE MOUNTAIN On March 20

MISC_Moving the Mountain promoMy name is Abby and I’m a non-binary puppeteer based here in Cincinnati. I’m performing my solo show, MOVING THE MOUNTAIN, here in Cincinnati before I leave to go back on tour, and wanted to invite you all!

The performance is at Liberty Exhibition Hall on March 20th at 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 and available online at www.abbypalen.com/actor. I hope to see you there!

Award-winning, punky, and bright, MOVING THE MOUNTAIN uses unconventional storytelling to illustrate joy’s ability to smash our demons so we can kiss them goodbye. Abby, a charismatic storyteller, physically dismantles a symbolic mountain of lies and insecurities. The kinetic narrative travels from playful to introspective, and the mode of communication defies expectation.

MOVING THE MOUNTAIN is a unique, delicate, and intimate piece of theatre; packaged like a comedy, but with the depth of a drama.

MOVING THE MOUNTAIN is the winner of the Social Good Award at Tampa Fringe, the Best Voice Award at Atlanta Fringe, and was funded by the 3 Arts Grant in Cincinnati, Ohio as part of the Rising Empowerment Award.
