Laughter is on the Menu at NKU’s Commonwealth Theatre

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY – Commonwealth Theatre Company at Northern Kentucky University’s School of the Arts is proud to present the Noël Coward comedy of FALLEN ANGELS, and the farewell production of CHURCH GIRLS: THE MUSICAL. A buffet dinner will be served in the NKU SOTA Art Gallery with performances taking place in the NKU Robert & Rosemary Stauss Theatre.

Before Julia and Jane married their husbands Fred and Willy – there was Maurice, a former French lover. While the women’s blissfully ignorant husbands are away on a golf trip, he shows up and reminds them of what they might be missing. Following an evening of drunkenness and fevered anticipation, Julia and Jane become concerned that indiscretions from their past will be revealed, and comedic antics ensue. FALLEN ANGELS is a sparkling, hilarious comedy about rivalry and manners, resulting in a champagne cocktail of wit and charm.

“Lizzie Borden took an ax…” And we know what happened next. Or, do we? It’s a powerhouse rock-show retelling of the sensational—and bloody—double murder that shocked New England in the summer of 1892, as told through the fierce performances of four stellar actresses. What starts as the abuse and despair of a troubled woman results in a shocking act of revenge when she takes a hatchet to her oppressive father and stepmother. Charged with the killing of her parents, Lizzie becomes a media sensation even as the trial takes its toll on the relationships with those dearest to her. This show contains references to abuse, murder and sexual situations.

Cast Announced for IS HE DEAD? at Mariemont Players

MPI_logoMARIEMONT (OH) – Mariemont Players, Inc. announces the cast for the first production of its 2019-2020 season, IS HE DEAD? Michele Mascari makes her MPI directorial debut with the comedy by Mark Twain adapted by David Ives.

The cast includes:

The (silent) roles of the Sultan of Turkey and the Emperor of Russia will be played by a series of special guests who will vary through the run.

“I’m excited to work with this cast,” Mascari said. “We have a nice mix of people I’ve worked with before and people I’m just meeting. We have some Mariemont stalwarts and some people these audiences will be seeing for the first time.

“I know we will laugh a lot while putting this show on its feet. You can’t help laughing with this material. Comedy is difficult, but we are up to the challenge and will have audiences laughing with us in September.”

Is He Dead? presents a fictional version of the great French painter Jean-François Millet as an impoverished artist in Barbizon, France. He stages his own death with the help of his colleagues to increase the value of his paintings, then dresses as a woman – ostensibly his sister, the Widow Daisy Tillou – to keep his secret safe. Is He Dead? combines elements of burlesque, farce, and social satire; it features devices like cross-dressing, mistaken identities and romantic deceptions to tell a story that raises questions about fame, greed and the value of art.

Is He Dead? opens Sept. 13 in the historic Walton Creek Theater (4101 Walton Creek Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45227) and runs through Sept. 29.

Synopsis
A feisty parolee follows her dreams, based on a page from an old travel book, to a small town in Wisconsin and finds a place for herself working at Hannah’s Spitfire Grill. It is for sale but there are no takers for the only eatery in the depressed town, so newcomer Percy suggests to Hannah that she raffle it off. Entry fees are one hundred dollars and the best essay on why you want the grill wins. Soon, mail is arriving by the wheelbarrow full and things are definitely cookin’ at the Spitfire Grill.

Characters
PERCY TALBOTT – early 20s. Pretty, if a bit rough-edged, her face declares the strength of her youth and a sadness beyond her years. Her accent has a southern Appalachian cadence. Strong folk/country belt to ‘D’, some head voice required.

HANNAH FERGUSON – 50+. A tough-skinned and flinty old bird with a short, no-nonsense manner bordering on the bitter. Mezzo/alto chest range.

SHELBY THORPE – mid-30s. A plain, soft-faced creature with a shy, almost ethereal manner. Shimmering folk soprano with strong high belt to ‘D’.

CALEB THORPE – early 40s. Out-of-work foreman of the stone quarry. Frustrated working man clinging to the past. Solid folk/rock voice with an edge (Top ‘G’).

SHERIFF JOE SUTTER – mid-late 20s. A young small-town policeman with an appealing intensity and a restless nature. Strong folk tenor to a ‘G’ (touches an ‘A’).

EFFY KRAYNECK – 50s. Postmistress and busybody, a woman with narrow eyes and a sour tongue. Solid singer in mezzo/alto chest range. Carries close harmony.

THE VISITOR – mid-40s. A mysterious figure who never speaks. An actor with powerful eyes and a very strong sense of his body.
