Falcon Theatre Announces Its 2018-19 Season Lineup

FT_logoNewport, KY — Falcon Theatre Artistic Director Ted Weil has announced the theater’s slate of plays for its 2018-19 season. The lineup offers a wide range of dramatic genres and styles…from a modern-day classic to a compelling drama that forces the audience to reexamine the horrific events of September 11…from a playful, madcap spoof of a much-beloved murder mystery to a Depression-era story of hopeful dreams in a hopeless time.

Production dates have not been set, so the slate of titles is in no particular order.

  • Yankee Tavern by Steven Dietz — Just when you thought you’d heard every crazy 9/11 conspiracy theory, a stranger walks into Yankee Tavern, an old neighborhood joint on the ground floor of a decaying New York City hotel. The young proprietor of the bar and his fiancée find themselves caught up in what might be the biggest conspiracy of all. This powerful dramatic thriller leaves audience members wondering until the last minute whether they should be laughing…or horrified.
  • The Lion in Winter by James Goldman — “Well, what shall we hang? The holly or each other?” A tale of sibling rivalry, adultery, and dungeons set in the middle ages, this dramatic comedy chronicles the story of King Henry II and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, during Christmas of 1183. Eleanor, who has been imprisoned since raising an army against her husband, has been freed just for the holidays. The question of who among their three sons will inherit England’s throne is the focus of the action. The duplicitous machinations and outright power-grabs by the sons, along with witty and razor-sharp dialogue, have made this story an audience favorite for more than fifty years.
  • The Exonerated by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen — This compelling plays presents the hard-hitting and unflinching stories of the real-life experiences of six survivors of death row. Gleaned from interviews, letters, transcripts, case files, and public records, this play is the tale of six individuals convicted of murder but ultimately spared the death penalty by DNA evidence, confessions from the real killers, and cold-case detective work. The strikingly similar experiences of the survivors are interwoven to reveal a pattern that paints a picture of an American justice system that may not always be blind.
  • Blues for an Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage — In the midst of the Great Depression, the creative spirit of New York’s Harlem Renaissance meets the harsh truths of the real world. Angel, a struggling blues singer and nightclub performer, and Guy, a costume designer who dreams of working for celebrities, live next door to the more serious and political Delia, a social worker with the goal of opening a community family planning clinic. Each must face his or her own challenges head on, but always with hope for a better life close at hand. As they search for a way to keep their dreams of love, career, and service alive in times of economic despair, they learn that the Great Depression can’t destroy the source of their creative spirit.
  • Baskerville by Ken Ludwig — Put on your deerstalker hat! The playwright who gave us Lend Me a Tenor and Moon Over Buffalo transforms Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic The Hound of the Baskervilles into a murderously funny adventure. The male heirs of the Baskerville line are being dispatched one by one. To find their ingenious killer, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson must brave the desolate moors before a family curse dooms its newest heir. Our intrepid investigators try to escape a dizzying web of clues, silly accents, disguises, and deceit as five actors deftly portray more than forty characters. Does a wild hellhound prowl the moors of Devonshire? Can our heroes discover the truth in time? Join the fun and see how far from elementary the truth can be.

Artistic Director Ted Weil: “We’re extremely excited about the year. We strive to build well-rounded seasons, with a balance of classics and newer works, including area premieres. This slate of plays is true to our mission and gives our patrons a slate of productions that will appeal to every taste.”

KTC_2018 Cincy Fringe Logo

THE LONG WAIT IS OVER! FIND OUT WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE
15TH ANNUAL CINCINNATI FRINGE FESTIVAL AT

THE 2018 CINCY FRINGE
LINEUP ANNOUNCEMENT PARTY!

April 24th @ 6:30pm

Know Theatre’s Cincinnati Fringe Festival (May 29 – June 10, 2018)  is 13 days of theatre, art, music, dance, and everything between — that’s kinda WEIRD. like YOU! And on Tuesday, April 24th we’re holding our annual Lineup Announcement Party at Know Theatre to let you in on everything there is to know about programming and events at this year’s 15th Anniversary Festival — including the unveiling of this year’s poster and imagery. There’s just so much to tell you about and we can’t wait!!!

Kicking off this year’s Announcement Party will be a special performance of the 2007 Audience Pick of the Fringe, Calculus: The Musical from Matheatre (Salt Lake City, UT), the only show in Cincy Fringe history to ever receive an extension of their run due to audience demand. For eight years, Know Theatre — in collaboration with Matheatre — sent Calculus: The Musical to hundreds of schools and events as a nationally touring production. In 2016 co-creator and original cast member Sadie Bowman resumed her original role in an updated version of the show on an independent Matheatre tour where it’s has been paired with artist (and Calculus co-star) Ricky Coates’ Tesla Ex Machina (itself a runaway hit at the 2015 Cincy Fringe).  In Calculus: The Musical,

Isaac Newton joins forces with Ada, a modern math student, on a journey of discovery. Their adventures through the peaks and troughs of Calculus is a buddy comedy for the ages! Archimedes, Robert Hooke, Gottfried Leibniz, L’Hopital and Riemann are part of the action, from toga parties and accordion smackdowns to sick rhymes and dream ballets–you’ve never laughed so much in an hour of Calculus. Musical parodies that span genres–from Daft Punk to Eminem, Gilbert and Sullivan to Lady Gaga and Meghan Trainor–introduce and illuminate concepts of limits, integration and differentiation.

Developed by a high school math teacher, all ten hilarious, catchy songs deliver powerful mnemonic content proven to get stuck in students’ heads, actively aiding comprehension and memorization of formulas, rules and concepts! The quest for the instantaneous rate of change and the area under the curve comes vividly alive with an unforgettable soundtrack!

Calculus: The Musical will begin at 7:30pm on 4/24 and tickets are available now for $15 via cincyfringe.com, knowtheatre.com, or by calling 513-300-5669. Your ticket also includes admission to the remainder of the Lineup Announcement Party, which is a pay-what-you-can event.

Following the performance of Calculus: The Musical, Fringe Producer Chris Wesselman will take to the Know’s Underground cabaret stage for a special edition of the Channel Fringe Hard-Hitting Action News Update, the Festival’s info-taining nightly newscast.

Chris will reveal details behind this year’s Lineup of productions and programming, the venues and spaces in Over-the-Rhine that will be home to shows and performances, make some special announcements regarding this year’s 15th Anniversary celebration, and so much MORE!

Join us for this “Fringe for a Night” shindig where we’ll all pretend it’s already the end of May and all our kinda WEIRD dreams are coming true!

Ken Ludwig’s TREASURE ISLAND Sails into Cincinnati Playhouse April 21

Ahoy, Cincinnati! Don’t miss this adventure of a lifetime before it escapes May 19

Audiences will set sail on the journey of a lifetime, complete with cutthroat pirates, a treasure map and a courageous boy entangled in a dangerous swashbuckling expedition, when Ken Ludwig’s TREASURE ISLAND arrives at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park April 21. This epic theatrical adaptation runs through May 19 (Opening Night is April 26).

“Ken Ludwig’s adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson novel will sweep the audience up into the adventure of a lifetime,” says Blake Robison, artistic director and director of the Playhouse production. “His story is a faithful, straightforward adaptation exploring the father/son dynamic between boy and pirate, peppered with funny dialogue and awesome sword fights.”

TREASURE ISLAND features all of the memorable elements of Stevenson’s tale, considered one of literature’s best adventure novels. The beloved adventure in exotic lands with mysterious treasure is also a brilliant coming-of-age story with a hero, Jim Hawkins, and has an entertaining cast of memorable pirates and villains, including Long John Silver.

Robison directed TREASURE ISLAND about ten years ago as artistic director of Round House Theatre. Now he’s returning to it to share with Cincinnati families the story that appeals to the kid in all of us.

“It’s been a priority for me that the Playhouse offers some multigenerational fare every season, in addition to A Christmas Carol,” Robison explains.  “Bringing these stories to life on stage allows families to enjoy the theatrical experience together. When a kid is 8, 9 or 10 years old and able to sit through a full-length play, we want to provide that opportunity. And it’s a story of a young boy growing up and finding his moral beacon. These are things we want for all of our children. Jim does them under extraordinary circumstances!”

The extravagant production will include period costumes from 1774 and a set that rotates, shifts and transforms into a pirate ship, English tavern and island jungle, bringing the story to life.

Ludwig told Samuel French of his play, “What could be better? We love pirates! They’re fun. They’re crazy. They’re the first antiheroes, aren’t they? They’re bloodthirsty. They kill people. They do terrible things. They steal things. But we’re rooting for them. We’re in love with them. And Long John Silver is a great example of that.”

The Playhouse also produced Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville during its 2016-2017 season. The comedic adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series proved to be a hit with Cincinnati audiences, including families.

For our last show of the season in the Marx Theatre, we’ll take a deep dive into TREASURE ISLAND by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Participants are invited to attend two special discussion events. At the first discussion on April 23, we’ll talk about the book itself: the plot and characters, the overarching themes, how you might imagine it translates to a theatrical setting and even the challenges you see in adapting the story. Our second discussion will take place on May 14, after you’ve seen the play, to discuss what excited and surprised you, and to learn from a member of the production team how they approached the show. Each event is free and open to the public; however, registration is required by calling the Box Office.
