The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati Stages POLKADOTS Regional Premiere

Tackling how our differences make us awesome not outcasts

TCTC_Polkadots logo

Cincinnati – This winter, The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati (TCT), the country’s oldest professional theater for young audiences, invites schools and families to be a part of an important regional premiere on the Ralph and Patricia Corbett Showtime Stage:  POLKADOTS: THE COOL KIDS MUSICAL.

Running February 21 – March 25, 2018, POLKADOTS: THE COOL KIDS MUSICAL will treat audiences to 49 up-close-and-personal performances in the small 152-seat performance space housed in the company’s facility on Red Bank Road.

POLKADOTS: THE COOL KIDS MUSICAL follows 8-year-old Lily Polkadot who just moved to the “Squares Only” small town of Rockaway. As the first Polkadot in an all Square school, Lily faces an almost impossible task of gaining acceptance from her peers. From daily bullying, to segregated drinking fountains, Lily’s quest seems hopeless until she meets Sky, a shy Square boy whose curiosity for her unique polkadot skin blooms into an unexpected pal-ship. Inspired by Civil Rights Pioneers Ruby Bridges and The Little Rock Nine, POLKADOTS serves as a colorful history lesson for the world, reminding us that our differences make us awesome, not outcasts.

Book written by Melvin Tunstall III.  Co-composer and lyricist Douglas Lyons.  Co-composer Greg Borowsky.  Based on an original concept by Douglas Lyons.  Directed by Nate Bertone.

Public show times include:

The 4-person cast includes:

  • Sarah Huff as Lily Polkadot
  • Rocky Paterra as Sky Square
  • Zoe Jensen as Penelope Square

TCT’s Sensory Friendly performance of POLKADOTS: THE COOL KIDS MUSICAL will be held on Friday, March 2 at 7 PM. This performance is intended for individuals on the autism spectrum, as well as children (and adults) with other special needs who may benefit. To create a sensory-friendly performance, the show is performed in a welcoming, supportive environment for those with sensory challenges.  Slight adjustments to lighting and sound are made and effects such as fog, strobes, and lights that extend into the audience are minimalized.  A downloadable Social Narrative (in Word format) is made available on the TCT website one week before the performance.  At the theater, TCT provides an area staffed by specialists in the field where patrons can take a break from the performance if necessary, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center has trained staff on hand.

For details about how to purchase tickets to Sensory-Friendly performances, visit www.thechildrenstheatre.com.

2018-2019 Season Announced by Dayton Playhouse

DPH_logoThe year was 1958. Charles de Gaulle was Time magazine’s Man of the Year. Doris Day, Lana Turner and Marilyn Monroe were big stars of the time. Super Glue and the Hula Hoop were invented and the Dayton Playhouse laid the groundwork to begin entertaining audiences in the Dayton community.

To celebrate their 60th anniversary, the Dayton Playhouse announces a stellar season. Fans of musicals, mystery and classic literature will be thrilled. The 2018-19 season kicks off with the musical My Fair Lady directed by Brian Sharp. When Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady opened on Broadway, it collected six Tony Awards including Best Musical. The film version took home eight Oscars including Best Picture. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady is the tale of a cockney flower girl transformed into a lady. The musical features some of the best-known tunes including “The Rain in Spain”, “I Could Have Danced All Night”, and “Get Me to the Church on Time”. Production dates are Sept. 14 – 30, 2018. Auditions are July 23 and 24, 2018.

Mystery and intrigue will be featured in Murder on the Nile by Agatha Christie and directed by Tim Rezash. In classic Agatha Christie-style, Kay Ridgeway has led a charmed life. Blessed with beauty, enormous wealth and a new husband, Kay embarks on a honeymoon voyage down the Nile. Fatal circumstances await when the idyllic surroundings are shattered by a shocking and brutal murder. Under scrutiny is a multitude of memorable passengers, all with a reason to kill. The tension and claustrophobia build as a shocking and audacious conspiracy is laid bare. Murder on the Nile will run Nov. 2 through 11. Auditions are Sept. 10 and 11.

There’s nothing like a sassy, sultry musical to chase off those winter blues. Ain’t Misbehavin’ is a musical celebration of legendary jazz great, Fats Waller with a knockout cast of five triple threat actors. Audiences will tap their toes to such fabulous tunes as “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter” and “It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie”. Directed by Kip Moore, Ain’t Misbehavin’ will run Jan. 18 through Feb. 3, 2019. Auditions are Nov. 5 and 6.

Harper Lee’s classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird was an instant success when it was published in 1960. Director Matthew Smith will bring this poignant look at racism in Maycomb, Alabama to the Dayton Playhouse stage March 8 through 17, 2019. Auditions are Jan. 21 and 22. Young Scout Finch manages to live a rather carefree life, insulated from racial issues until her father, Atticus Finch, defends an innocent man, Tom Robinson, against a potential death sentence. To Kill a Mockingbird is now considered an American masterpiece about the power of childhood, innocence, morality and love.

The Dayton Playhouse will wrap up its diamond anniversary season with a multiple Tony Award-winning musical. Due to contract negotiations, the Dayton Playhouse can’t announce the name of this musical yet but rest assured audiences will be on their feet by the end of the show. Richard Lee Waldeck will direct this show which will run May 3 through 19, 2019. Auditions are set for March 20 and 21.

Aronoff Center – Fifth Third Bank Theater [Downtown]

Written by Roger Collins

Your guides: Health teacher Mr. Cobb, struggling with life-forming vocational issues, and his students Bobby, tortured by his soldier father’s perils in the Middle East combat, and Val, a slave to her hyperactivity. All try desperately to determine if “normal” and “sane” are the same thing, and to come down on the side of sanity, albeit caught in what is perhaps another-than-sane context of consequentially questionable values and chronic terrorism.

Auditions Announced for MASS at 2018 May Festival

May Festival logoJoin the cast of Leonard Bernstein’s MASS at the 2018 May Festival!

The Cincinnati May Festival invites singers of all voice types to audition for solo and chorus roles in the May 2018 performance of Leonard Bernstein’s MASS: A Theatre Piece For Singers, Players, and Dancers.

Those selected to participate will join the May Festival Chorus, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and conductor Robert Porco for a performance of this monumental work on May 19, 2018 at the recently re-opened Cincinnati Music Hall. The performance celebrates the centenary of Bernstein’s birth and recalls a previous performance of the work at the 1972 May Festival.

Auditions will take place in the May Festival Rehearsal Room at Music Hall on Saturday, January 20, 10am–4pm and Sunday, January 21, 6pm–9pm.

Casting

Street Chorus: The May Festival seeks approximately 40 singers (ages 16+) to populate the “Street Chorus,” an ensemble that sings in Latin and English in a wide variety of musical styles. Singers will be chosen from this chorus to sing solos ranging from extended songs to brief interjections. Street Chorus singers and soloists should be comfortable in rock, blues, jazz, pop, and Broadway vocal stylings and should possess the ability to learn complex ensemble music. Previous experience in musical theater productions is desirable, but not required.

Boy Soloist: The May Festival seeks a boy soloist with an unchanged voice to play an important dramatic role in the performance. The boy should possess a pleasant voice and strong musical skills. Previous stage experience is desirable, but not required.

Audition Requirements

All singers interested in the Street Chorus should prepare two musical selections:

  1. A Street Chorus excerpt from MASS, distributed by the May Festival in advance of the auditions to all auditioning singers. Singers should prepare one voice part of the excerpt (soprano, alto, tenor or bass) as appropriate to their vocal range. The excerpt does not need to be memorized. An accompanist will be provided.
  2. Any song from the Broadway or show tune repertoire. The audition panel will hear up to three minutes of the song; therefore, excerpts of songs are acceptable and encouraged. Auditioning singers should choose excerpts that best showcase their range and unique vocal abilities. Selections should be memorized. An accompanist will be provided, and singers should bring two copies of their selection for the accompanist and the audition panel. Copies should be in the key in which singers intend to sing the excerpt.

All boys interested in the role of the Boy Soloist should prepare two musical selections:

  1. An excerpt of the solo music for the boy from MASS, distributed by the May Festival in advance of the auditions to all auditioning singers. The excerpt does not need to be memorized. An accompanist will be provided.
  2. Any short song that demonstrates vocal skill and dramatic comfort. Simple folk songs are acceptable, as are Broadway tunes. The song should be memorized. Selections need not be accompanied, but if an accompanist is desired, singers should bring two copies of their selection for the accompanist and the audition panel. Copies should be in the key in which singers intend to sing the excerpt.

Audition Signups

Interested singers should fill out the audition form linked below. Before signing up for an audition, singers should consult the rehearsal and performance schedule carefully. All rehearsals are mandatory. However, if you are aware of schedule conflicts, please note them in your audition signup form. Participation in this performance with regard to rehearsal conflicts is at the discretion of the conductor and May Festival management.

The Boy Soloist will not attend Street Chorus rehearsals. Rather, individual rehearsals will be arranged with the conductor, and the Boy Soloist will join the cast in May for any necessary staging rehearsals and for all full cast rehearsals.
