VOI Presents THE MUSIC MAN Concert Version

Voices of Indiana Presents Meredith Willson’s
THE MUSIC MAN CONCERT VERSION

VOI_logoLawrenceburg, IN – Voices of Indiana presents Meredith Willson’s THE MUSIC MAN CONCERT VERSION Friday, August 1st and Saturday, August 2nd at 7:00 p.m. in the Lawrenceburg High School Auditorium. (Book, music and lyrics by Meredith Willson, concert adaptation by Evans Haile.) Drawing talented performers from throughout the area, the cast includes youth participants in grades 4-12 and adults. Directed by Susan Herrick and Jennifer Eliason, THE MUSIC MAN CONCERT VERSION is a musical show piece featuring light staging and choreography, and the beloved music from this Broadway classic. Admission is $10 for adults or $5 for students; tickets are available at the door (cash or check accepted).

The role of fast-talking charmer Harold Hill is being played by Kevin Stanford, a resident of Cincinnati (Madeira); Lawrenceburg resident and high school senior Sydney Orndorff plays Marian (the librarian). “The patter songs are a fun challenge,” said Mr. Stanford of the distinctive rhythmic lyrics that define the role. Miss Orndorff likes that she can play up the comedic aspects of her character: “Marian is such a joy to portray; she fits my personality, and her songs are beautiful.” Of the experience of participating in the Voices of Indiana program, Miss Orndorff adds, “I have enjoyed watching and getting to know the other actors – they are just so skilled!”

Show Synopsis: An affectionate paean to Smalltown, U.S.A. of a bygone era, Meredith Willson’s THE MUSIC MAN follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize – this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall.

An Education that Sings: Voices of Indiana was formed in 2001 by current Creative Director Susan Herrick, under the Dearborn Highland Arts Council, and became an independent organization in 2006. Featuring nearly 100 young people from the Tri-State, ranging from second grade through high school, Young Voices is the flagship program of Voices of Indiana.

In COUPLED, “there is no real story line, but rather a series of vignettes about love, friendship and the relationships between three disparate couples, each with their own issues, as they spend the weekend together at The New Millennium Oasis Resort.” -Marsha Reiniers, Hernando Today

Rogers, who is planning a move back to Cincinnati in the near future, hopes to also stage COUPLED for local audiences. When that happens, you can find details here on Behind the Curtain.

For more information on COUPLED, you can check out these online reviews for its premiere at the Jimmy Ferraro’ Studio Theatre in New Port Richey, Fla., which continues through Aug. 10.
