The League of Cincinnati Theatres awards 4 Stars to the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED), playing now through August 16.

“This is a hilarious sendup of Shakespeare plays and the mystique of Shakespeare. It’s fun to watch the Shakespeare Company spoof its own product,“ says an LCT panelist. “This is clearly an ensemble piece, showing impeccable comic timing and huge energy,” the panelist  continues.

Another panelist adds, “the ensemble of Nick Rose, Jeremy Dubin, and, Justin McComb is outstanding, each having moments of brilliance.” Another notes, “The inclusion of rap, the engagement or interaction with the audience, the superb energy of the actors all added up to make it an enjoyable evening.”

Tickets to “Complete Works” can be purchased by calling  513-381-2273 or contacting www.cincyshakes.com.

Nominations for LCT awards will be determined and announced at the end of the season and winners awarded at the annual LCT gala in the spring.  LCT panelists are volunteer representatives from the theatre community and theatre audiences.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres was founded in 1999 to strengthen, nurture and promote Cincinnati’s theatre community. LCT provides its member companies and individual members with education, resources and services to enhance the quality and exposure of the theatre community in Cincinnati and increase community awareness, attendance and involvement. Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 Character Break Down:

  • Helsa Wenzel: Helsa is the German maid of the Grossenknueten estate. She is killed in the first scene of the play, only to be impersonated by her twin brother, Dieter. The actress who plays Helsa also appears at the end of the play as “Katrina, the cook from Koblenz.”
  • Elsa Von Grossenknueten: Elsa is the owner of the mansion and is the financial backer of many musicals. Elsa summons the group together in an attempt to find out who murdered her “friend” Bebe McAllister. She is extremely eccentric, and her grandfather was a spy. She claims that espionage runs in her blood.
  • Michael Kelly:  Kelly is an undercover cop. Elsa appeals to him to help solve the mystery of the Stage Door Slasher. Kelly’s tough, no-nonsense attitude puts him at odds with the zany Elsa and the dramatic types that visit.  Ideally reads with Irish accent.
  • Patrick O’Reilly:  O’Reilly claims to be an Irish tenor (fake Irish accent helpful). Eventually, O’Reilly claims to be “Tony Garibaldi”, an undercover cop with a bronx accent-only to reveal himself as a Gestapo Agent named Klaus Stansdorff, sent to find German defectors.  German accent helpful.
  • Ken De La Maize:  Ken is a “typical” director, speaking of theater as a “pure art.” He also has an annoying habit of name-dropping, constantly citing the various celebrities he has worked with over the years. Everyone always claims to have seen the films he makes, only for him to reveal that they have not yet been released.
  • Nikki Crandall: Nikki is considered a typical chorus girl-but she is eventually revealed to be Ensign Nicole Crandall, of US Navel Intelligence. Her secret mission was to find the Germans who were to sabotage American war efforts. She is also interested in solving the mystery of the Stage Door Slasher.
  • Eddie McCuen: Directly based on Bob Hope, Eddie is the out of work comedian. He has an obvious attraction to Nikki the whole play. He’s afraid of everything and uses humor to mask his true cowardly nature.
  • Marjorie Baverstock: Marjorie is a Broadway producer. Think New York upper class broadway groupie. She constantly flatters everyone around her, and speaks in elevated language; her “new word” is “divoon.”
  • Roger Hopewell:  Roger is the composer and Bernice’s writing partner; the two have had a string of Broadway hits. The American Fop, Roger enjoys teasing Ken about his artistic ways, but flares up whenever someone insults his musical style. He also knows how to deal with Bernice’s many quirks.
  • Bernice Roth: All the time is Martini time for Bernice.  She is Roger’s writing partner. Bernice is very odd and emotional, frequently losing her composure and screaming. Think hippy mets gypsy mets drunk uncle (aunt).

SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN on Aug. 23

RSCT_Smoke on the MountainSMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN
Presented by RiverStage Community Thetare
Aug. 23
New Richmond

SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN tells the story of a Saturday Night Gospel Sing at a country church in North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains in 1938. The show features two dozen rousing bluegrass songs played and sung by the Sanders Family, a traveling group making its return to performing after a five-year hiatus. Pastor Oglethorpe, the young and enthusiastic minister of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, has enlisted the Sanders Family in his efforts to bring his tiny congregation into “the modern world.” Between songs, each family member “witnesses” — telling a story about an important event in their life. Though they try to appear perfect in the eyes of a congregation who wants to be inspired by their songs, one thing after another goes awry and they reveal their true — and hilariously imperfect – natures. By the evening’s end, the Sanders Family have endeared themselves to us by revealing their weaknesses and allowing us to share in their triumphs.
