Cincinnati, OH – New Edgecliff Theatre proudly opens its 2013-2014 season with the classic American comedy, BUS STOP, on September 18. Directed by Jared Doren, this charming romantic tale has been delighting audiences since its Broadway debut in 1955. “It’s inspiring, warm, and funny,” says Jim Stump, Producing Artistic Director. “Bus Stop is the perfect opening for our 16th season.”

Written by William Inge, Bus Stop tells the story of Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse, who becomes stuck on a bus leaving Kansas City in the middle of a snowstorm. With all roads blocked, passengers must spend the night in a cheerful roadside diner. However, having been pursued, made love to and, finally, kidnapped by a twenty-one-year-old cowboy, Cherie is desperately looking for a way out. This belligerent cowhand has other ideas and is ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her, alive and kicking, all the way to Montana.

“This is a comedy about ordinary people traveling on a misguided pathway toward love and it’s a perfect opener for our ‘Best Laid Plans’ season,” adds Devon Campailla, Managing Director. “The nature of love, the capacity for generosity, and the innocence of the human heart all combine to make this an endearing play and a landmark in American theatre.”

The production marks the return of several actors familiar to NET audiences – Bob Allen, Don Volpenhein, Christine Dye, Mindy Heithaus, and David Roth. In addition, Bus Stop is the NET stage debut for locals David Levy, Tyler Alessi, and Tess Talbot.

BUS STOP Runs Sept. 18-28

Reviews: Behind the Curtain | CityBeat |

Directed by Jared Doren

In the middle of a howling snowstorm, a bus out of Kansas City pulls up at a cheerful roadside diner. All roads are blocked, and four or five weary travelers are going to have to hole up until morning.

Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse in a sparkling gown and a seedy fur-trimmed jacket, is the passenger with most to worry about. She’s been pursued, made love to and finally kidnapped by a twenty-one-year-old cowboy with a ranch of his own and the romantic methods of an unusually headstrong bull. This belligerent cowhand is right behind her, ready to sling her over his shoulder and carry her, alive and kicking, all the way to Montana. Even as she’s ducking out from under his clumsy but confident embraces, and screeching at him fiercely to shut him up, she pauses to furrow her forehead and muse, “Somehow deep inside of me I got a funny feeling I’m gonna end up in Montana …” As a counterpoint to the main romance, the proprietor of the cafe and the bus driver at last find time to develop a friendship of their own; a middle-age scholar comes to terms with himself; and a young girl who works in the cafe also gets her first taste of romance.
