Maysville Players Present Tony Award-Winning Best Musical 1776 at the Historic Washington Opera House

Maysville, KY – April 2026 — The Maysville Players, recognized as the oldest continuously operating community theater in Kentucky, proudly announce their upcoming production of 1776 The Musical, a powerful and timely celebration of the birth of our nation. Presented in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States, performances will take place at the historic Washington Opera House in downtown Maysville, Kentucky.

Step back in time to the summer of 1776, when America’s founding fathers gathered in Philadelphia to debate, negotiate, and ultimately sign the Declaration of Independence. With a brilliant score and witty, insightful script, 1776 brings history to life through memorable characters, spirited performances, and powerful storytelling that resonates just as strongly today.

Audiences will follow John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and their fellow delegates as they navigate political tensions, personal conflicts, and the immense responsibility of shaping a new nation. Blending humor, drama, and unforgettable music, 1776 offers a compelling look at the human side of history.

Presented by a company with a rich and enduring legacy, this production continues the Maysville Players’ long-standing tradition of bringing high-quality live theater to the region. Staged at the beautifully restored Washington Opera House-a treasured landmark and recognized as the oldest working theater in Kentucky and the fourth oldest in the United States—1776 promises a uniquely engaging experience for audiences of all ages.

Directed by Mikey Mills

This nostalgic musical dramatizes the efforts of John Adams to persuade his colleagues to vote for American independence and to sign the document. 1776 puts a human face on the pages of history as we see the men behind the national icons: proud, frightened, uncertain, irritable, charming, often petty and ultimately noble figures determined to do the right thing for a fledgling nation.
