CINCINNATI, OH– The CINCINNATI ONE-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL (#1MPF) returns to for its fifth year, in partnership with Know Theatre of Cincinnati. The 5th Annual Cincinnati #1MPF runs three performances only; August 4th, 5th, and 6th at 8pm. All performances are at Know Theatre of Cincinnati (1120 Jackson St) Tickets, priced at $20, are available at knowtheatre.com.

About THE ONE-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL
THE ONE-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL (#1MPF) is America’s largest and longest running grass roots theatre company, founded by Producing Artistic Director, Dominic D’Andrea . #1MPF is a social barometer project, which investigates the zeitgeist of different communities through dialogue, consensus building and a performance of 50-100 short moments generated by each community. #1MPF works in partnership with theatres and/or social organizations sharing playwright, educational or community-specific missions across the country. The aim is to create locally sourced playwright-focused community events, with the goal of promoting the spirit of radical inclusion. #1MPF represents playwrights of different age, gender, race, cultures, and points of career. The work attempts to reflect the theatrical landscape of local artistic communities by creating a dialogue between the collective conscious and the individual voice. 

In each city, #1MPF works with partnering organizations to identify programs or initiatives in each community to support with the proceeds from ticket sales. The goal is to find ways give directly back to the artists in each community. Supported programs have ranged from educational programming, youth poetry projects, theatre program in prisons, playwright residencies and memberships, playwrights salaried commissions, community access projects, arts workshops and other social and artistic initiatives.

Step Into the Cage Alongside the GIRL IN THE RED CORNER at Know Theatre

A warrior woman finds her fire and fights for her future.

Unemployed, fresh off a dead-end marriage, and searching for a way to take control of her life, Halo walks into a gym and signs up for mixed martial arts lessons. As she prepares for her first match, Halo realizes that life inside the cage and outside the cage are disturbingly similar. And that the only way to survive either is to fight.

Heart-pounding action meets tense family drama in the Know’s Season 22 opener, GIRL IN THE RED CORNER, by Stephen Spotswood.

Directed by Know Associate Artistic Director Tamara Winters, GIRL IN THE RED CORNER is an unflinching look at the grit and guts of female MMA fighters, as well as the collateral damage of life in working-class America.

Halo’s life is chaos. She’s lost her job, her marriage, and her sense of direction. With nothing left to lose, she walks into a mixed martial arts gym and asks for lessons.

Halo’s trainer thinks she’s a lightweight. Her mom and her sister think she’s lost her mind. But as she trains, Halo gets a glimpse of a way out of a dead-end life.

Yet as the date of her first big fight draws nearer, Halo discovers you can’t just walk away from where you come from. Sometimes, the world outside the ring bleeds through. And when that happens, you just have to stand and fight.

Associate Artistic Director Tamara Winters returns to the director’s chair for this visceral and personal regional premiere. Stories about women who fight their way through to a better future are becoming Tamara’s stock-in-trade – from 2015’s Hearts Like Fists to 2016’s Silent Sky, as well as last season’s swashbuckling Susan Swayne & The Bewildered Bride and the upcoming Lasso of Truth in 2020, about the complicated creation and lasting legacy of Wonder Woman.

When asked what it was about this story that demands to be told, right now, she said:

This is a story for anyone who has had enough. Enough of people making them feel small. Enough being made to believe that they should settle for the hand they’ve been dealt. Enough believing that where you were has to determine where you’re headed.

But it’s also a story that lays bare the lie that everyone starts from an even playing field. This play exposes the forces that keep us down and keep us fighting each other instead of fighting against those who would hold us back: the forces of addiction, generational poverty, gender barriers, forgotten communities.

And it’s also a story about what it takes to become whole again. About what happens when you rekindle the fire inside, put order to the chaos, and discover not just what’s worth fighting for, but who you need in your corner to survive.

GIRL IN THE RED CORNER features a cast of actors every bit as fierce as the show’s characters.

Starring as Halo, local favorite Tess Talbot makes a triumphant return to the Know stage. Audiences who loved her as feisty occultist Alicia in last season’s Mercury, as the titular genius Ada Lovelace in Ada & the Engine, and as Joseph Smith’s rebellious child-bride Lula in Listen for the Light won’t want to miss what happens when she steps into the cage.

The spellbinding Jen Joplin appears as Terry, Halo’s embattled mother, following her memorable appearance as Virginie, the “witch in the woods,” in 2018’s The Man-Beast on the Know’s Mainstage and as herself in her own one-woman show, The MILF Also Rises, at the 2019 Cincinnati Fringe Festival.

Know newcomer Abi Esmena comes out swinging as Halo’s tough-as-nails MMA trainer, Gina.

Longtime friend of Know Mindy Heithaus returns to the MainStage for the first time since 2016 as Brinn, Halo’s long-suffering big sister and mother to a 12-year-old whom she believes is becoming much too like her wildhearted aunt.

And rounding out the cast is Adam Tran as Brinn’s husband Warren and Gina’s trainer Kyle. Adam was last seen at the Know in our Season 21 opening Duncan Sheik/Kyle Jarrow musical Whisper House as the lovelorn-yet-stalwart Yasuhiro.

The incomparable k. Jenny Jones joins the fray as Fight Director to shape the physical world of this play, where the boundaries between the ring and the real world blur and the emotional arcs hit as hard and fast as the fists will fly. A Master Teacher of stage combat, k. Jenny Jones is internationally known for her contemporary unarmed fighting style, and is the only woman in the U.S. inducted into the College of Fight Masters by the Society of American Fight Directors.

This smart, seductive, wild ride features the two women Marston lived with in a polyamorous relationship – both of whom inspired the famous character – plus a girl in search of answers about her childhood heroine, and a guy trying to hold on to his prized first issue.

Behind-the-Scenes in Season 22

Gender Parity
The Know is committed to gender parity in the playwrights we produce, as well as in the makeup of our creative teams. Season 22 is our fourth season in a row with at least 50% of the plays in the MainStage season written by women. Additionally, this season marks the third in a row where 60% or more onstage roles are specifically for female or non-binary actors.  

Nationally, only 30% of new plays produced in the 2018-19 season were written by women (up from 26% in 2017-18). We believe that it is part of our ongoing responsibility to change that statistic.

Accessibility
In our continuing efforts to make theatre accessible, regardless of economic circumstance, we are keeping our base ticket price for MainStage shows at just $25, with $15 rush tickets for anyone 10 minutes before curtain as long as seats are available. We’re also continuing our Welcome Experiment for Wednesday night performances, with $10 tickets available for advance reservation, and half of the seats available as walk up tickets, free of charge. The cost of a ticket inherently limits who is able to attend live theatre, and we believe that theatre should be for everyone.

Living Wage
Know Theatre is committed to efforts to pay all artists in our MainStage season a living wage. In order to help make that possible, we also offer a $35 living wage ticket for those patrons of higher economic means. Artist pay defines who gets to make theatre, and by continually pushing to increase wages, we help empower voices that would otherwise be silenced.

And here’s what Producing Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford has to say about Season 22:

“When we settled on the theme Fear Itself for our 21st season, we knew that we’d need to follow it up with something equally compelling, and equally drawn from the zeitgeist.

To me, The Fight is not just about the themes that we’re putting on stage, it’s about what we’re doing behind the scenes.

How do we combat economic inequality through the art we make? How do we ensure that everyone gets paid a fair wage? How do we fight for more underrepresented voices? How do we get a better quality of life for all? As a small theatre company that’s continually challenged with doing more with ever fewer resources, how do we change the world?

And how, while doing all that, do we make the best work possible for our community?

I think the plays we have in this season encompass all those thoughts in a beautiful way. So maybe we won’t change the whole world, but in this collection, I think we’ve got at least one show this season that can change your world.  And that’s the first step.

Know Theatre of Cincinnati, a 99 seat contemporary theatre company in its 22nd season, seeks a passionate, energized candidate to join its small, but mighty, team of full time employees as Design and Production Associate, with a focus on Scenic Art and Props Design.

Know Theatre is Cincinnati’s Theatrical Playground. The Know showcases unexpected voices, new works, and plays that embrace the inherent theatricality of the live experience. Know Theatre seeks to be a place where artists and audiences feel welcome to take artistic risks, creating work that is cutting edge and accessible.

As one of only a handful of theatres around the country led by a designer, Know Theatre prides itself on the production values it can achieve on a limited budget.

Know Produces 5-8 MainStage productions per season on a year round schedule, along with several smaller scale Second Stage productions and special events designated as “Irregular Programming.”

Know also produces the annual Cincinnati Fringe Festival, a 14 day festival with pop up venues throughout Know’s Historic Neighborhood, Over-the-Rhine.

Overview
The Design & Production Associate Position at Know Theatre encompasses responsibilities that bridge a number of traditional theatrical jobs.

These responsibilities can be broken down into several categories.

– Scenic Charge
– Props Designer
– Technician

The Design & Production Associate is also responsible for fulfilling duties some of which are shared by all company members, which shall be noted as Company Duties.

Specific Duties
Duties under each of these categories include, but are not limited to, the following.

Scenic Charge
– Creates paint samples for approval by Scenic Designers and the Artistic Director
– Mixes all color
– Is responsible for paint and surface treatment on all scenic elements
– Is responsible for carving or otherwise sculpting scenic elements such as stone, tree bark, etc. as well as all necessary surface texturing
– Applies protective coatings where necessary
– Coordinates and supervises any additional paint staff
– Maintains the safety, order, and cleanliness of all paint areas
– Maintains all paint equipment
– Instructs stage management and running crew in the proper care and maintenance of finished surfaces
– Creates a touch up kit for use during the run of the show
– Provides touch up to scenery and props as needed, when it falls outside of the scope of the Stage Manager’s skill set
– Attends all production meetings

Properties Designer
– Collaborates with Director, Scenic Designer and Stage Management to create and update prop lists for all MainStage and SecondStage productions.
– Works directly with directors and Scenic Designer to establish priorities and keep expenditures within predetermined time and budget constraints based on approved final designs.
– Determines or approves approaches, procedures, and techniques to create or acquire all hand props, furniture, and set dressing for the production.
– Conducts research and development of unusual properties concepts. Facilitates the creation of prototypes for rehearsals and/or production meetings as necessary.
– Pulls from storage, purchases, rents, borrows, or builds all props as needed.
– Schedules and coordinates properties load-in for the production, communicating with stage crew and stage management regarding instructions and expectations.
– Responds to stage management communication regarding props issues as needed.
– Advises stage crew regarding maintenance and repair of props as needed.
– Schedules and coordinates properties strike, ensuring responsible return of borrowed/loaned props.
– Maintains accurate records of expenditures and responsibly handle purchasing funds.
– Coordinates furniture rental, borrow, or acquisition in conjunction with the technical director.
– Maintains property stock and storage.

Technician
– Serves as additional carpenter as available.
– May serve as technician on Second Stage productions as needed.
– Serves as a Venue Technician during the Cincinnati Fringe Festival.

Company Duties
– Serves as House Manager, Box Officer, technician, and/or bartender as available/required.
– Answers phones during regular office hours when available.
– Participates in facilities cleanup and maintenance as needed.

Specific duties may be altered based on candidate’s skill set and interest.

Scenic Design opportunities may be available as time, skill, interest, and budget permits.

Compensation
– This is a full time salaried position at $432.70 per week, paid bi-monthly ($22,500 annually).
– Health insurance coverage is available through Know Theatre’s group plan.
– Each full time Know Theatre employee is accorded 2 weeks of vacation per fiscal year. Vacation is scheduled as can be accommodated by KTC’s production schedule.

Qualifications
– Bachelor’s Degree in technical theatre, theatrical design, or equivalent professional experience.
– Experience in scenic art and props construction.
– Expertise in a wide variety of paint and surface treatment techniques.
– Experience with Vectorworks and/or Autocad.
– Excellent technical and budget management skills.
– Familiarity with  sound and lighting equipment and consoles.
– Proficiency with standard office software.
– Clear and effective communicator, both written and verbal. Ability to work independently or collaboratively with designers, directors and other staff.
– Experience in managing crews.
– Strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
– Theatrical background and understanding of the theatrical process.
– Ability to multi-task and work with deadlines. Must have ability to plan projects and work independently.
– Ability to remain calm and productive in difficult situations demonstrating good “people skills” and a sense of humor.
– Ability to work long hours, including weekends and evenings, as necessary during technical rehearsals.
– Ability to lift 50 lbs and handle extensive standing, walking, and step-climbing.
– High level of comfort on ladders.
– Possession of a valid Driver’s license.

Know Theatre of Cincinnati, a 99 seat contemporary theatre company in its 22nd season, seeks a passionate, energized candidate for the position of Marketing & Community Relations Manager to join its small, but mighty, team of full time employees.

Know Theatre is Cincinnati’s Theatrical Playground. The Know showcases unexpected voices, new works, and plays that embrace the inherent theatricality of the live experience. Know Theatre seeks to be a place where artists and audiences feel welcome to take artistic risks, creating work that is cutting edge and accessible.

As one of only a handful of theatres around the country led by a designer, Know Theatre prides itself on the production values it can achieve on a limited budget.

Know Produces 5-8 MainStage productions per season on a year round schedule, along with several smaller scale Second Stage productions and special events designated as “Irregular Programming.”

Know also produces the annual Cincinnati Fringe Festival, a 14 day festival with pop up venues throughout Know’s Historic Neighborhood, Over-the-Rhine.

Overview
The Marketing and Community Relations Manager position at Know Theatre encompasses responsibilities that involve marketing, public relations, and front of house responsibilities.

These responsibilities can be broken down into several categories.

– Marketing/PR
– Event Coordination
– Community Outreach
– Sales/Box Office
– House Management/Bar

The Marketing and Community Relations Manager is also responsible for fulfilling duties some of which are shared by all company members, which shall be noted as Additional Responsibilities.

Specific Duties
Duties under each of these categories include, but are not limited to, the following.

Marketing/PR
– Helps create and oversee the marketing budgets.
– Assists in setting, tracking, and maintaining the marketing timeline and goals.
– Assists in creating collateral digital marketing material including graphics for use in social media.
– Coordinates pick up and distribution of marketing collateral.
– Assists in designing and maintaining the Know Theatre and Fringe Festival websites.
– Serves as primary press contact for the organization.
– Drafts press releases and media alerts.
– Updates ArtsWave guide and other digital event calendars for all events.
– Coordinates and distributes production photography.
– Coordinates promotional photo shoots and videography.
– Creates Know’s Email newsletter.
– Crafts messaging and strategy for other email and social media communications.
– Assists in managing Know Theatre’s social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat).
– Coordinates mailing/marketing materials for educational programming.
– Serves as a supervisor of Scripps Howard Communications Intern each Spring.

Community Outreach
– Serves as the face of the organization at events around Cincinnati.
– Builds and maintains relationships with community partners.
– Engages affinity and community groups on a season wide and per production basis.
– Serves as liaison for community based programming conducted with partner organizations.
– Crafts, plans, and executes personalized weekly email outreach to members, and occasional email outreach to flex pass holders and donors.

Box Office and Sales
– Manages Box Office, including creation and maintenance of events within the ticketing system.
– Coordinates the hiring, scheduling, and training of Box Office overhire.
– Assists in maintaining Box Office Policy.
– Assists in ad sales for playbill and Fringe Guide publications.

Front of House Management
– Manages House Management Staffing.
– Coordinate hiring, scheduling, and training of House Management overhire.
– Maintain House Management documentation for each show.
– Compiles information for Curtain Speeches.
– Acts as Bar Series Manager for the Cincinnati Fringe Festival.
– Schedules and facilitates food donations/trucks during Fringe.
– Facilitates volunteer coordination, etc, including volunteer recruitment throughout the year.

Event Coordination
– Assists in managing member and fundraising events.
– Oversees event details including, but not limited to set-up, bar, food, signage, decorations, security, registration, marketing, printing, transportation, & off-site activities.
– Participates in special events as “all staff.”

Additional Responsibilities
– Maintains inventory of supplies for the Underground Lobby Bar.
– Serves as a liaison for volunteers as needed during office hours and events.
– Participates in fundraising events.
– Serves as House Manager as required.
– Serves as Box Officer as required.
– Serves as a technician as required.
– Serves as a bartender as available.
– Answers phones during regular office hours when available.
– Participates in facilities cleanup and maintenance as required.

Specific duties may be altered based on candidate’s skill set and interest.

Compensation
– This is a full time salaried position at $480.77 per week, paid bi-monthly ($25,000 annually).
– Health insurance coverage is available through Know Theatre’s group plan.
– Each full time Know Theatre employee is accorded 2 weeks of vacation per fiscal year. Vacation is scheduled as can be accommodated by KTC’s production schedule.

Qualifications
– Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional experience.
– Proficiency with standard office software, especially google docs.
– Familiarity with email marketing systems like MailChimp.
– Familiarity with basic graphic design and design software (like photoshop, GIMP, InDesign, etc).
– Clear and effective communicator, both written and verbal. Ability to work independently or collaboratively.
– Significant writing experience, whether fiction or non-fiction.
– Strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
– Theatrical background and understanding of the theatrical process.
– Ability to multi-task and work with deadlines. Must have ability to plan projects and work independently.
– Experience with marketing, social media, and targeted advertising.
