After an acclaimed Off-Broadway premiere in 2018, Gloria: A Life runs February 27 – March 15, 2020 at the Loft Theatre in downtown Dayton

(Dayton, Ohio) — The Human Race Theatre Company is continuing its 2019-2020 “Women of Influence Season” with the Dayton premiere of Gloria: A Life, a new play celebrating the life and legacy of one of the most important figures of America’s feminist movement.

Fifty years after Gloria Steinem began raising her voice and advocating for others, her vision is as urgent today as ever. Described simply as “History. Her Story. Our Story,” Gloria: A Life is a richly detailed tapestry that’s both inspiring and remarkable.

Written by Tony Award-nominee playwright Emily Mann, Gloria: A Life opened Off-Broadway in 2018 to critical acclaim. Kappy Kilburn, Executive Director of The Human Race Theatre Company, played an instrumental role in bringing Gloria’s story to the stage in New York City, and now to Dayton, Ohio. The Human Race Theatre’s production will mark the first performances of Gloria: A Life beyond its original creative team.

“It was a privilege to be a part of the journey to the world premiere of Gloria: A Life as I packed up to leave NYC for Dayton,” said Kilburn. “And through that relationship, it is now my honor to present it here, at The Human Race Theatre Company, and continue the powerful conversation this play elicits.”

Gloria believes in the necessity of conversation as a catalyst for change, and the powerful play offers us all a path forward in a way that only live theatre can provide. This regional premiere features a dynamic all-female cast, led by Jennifer Johansen as Gloria Steinem and directed by Marya Spring Cordes.

“When we work together, anything is possible,” said Cordes. “While a good deal has changed for the better, every worthwhile fight is three steps forward and one step back. We are still fighting for a good deal of the same gender and civil rights issues all these years later.”

“Gloria: A Life humanizes and contextualizes the iconic history of Gloria’s life, shining as an example of how rewarding and challenging it can be to lead a fully human, active life,” she added.

The entire community is invited to join The Human Race Theatre in celebrating this award-winning journalist, social political activist, and nationally recognized leader of the American feminist movement and Toledo, Ohio native.

GLORIA: A LIFE is rated PG-15. Parents are strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 15.

Biographies on the cast and creative team can be found on The Human Race Theatre Company’s website.

The preview performance of GLORIA: A LIFE is Thursday, February 27. Opening night is Friday, February 28.

The Human Race Theatre Company’s production of GLORIA: A LIFE is sponsored by Larry Glickler – Glickler Funeral Home, Marni Flagel, The Hope-Aholics, Alice & Burt Saidel, and R. Doug Annala.

All season long, The Human Race Theatre Company is partnering with The Neon for the “Women of Influence in the Movies” series. Join us at The Neon on Monday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. for 9 to 5: The Story of a Movement (2020 work in progress). In the early 1970s, a group of women office workers in Boston decided they’d suffered in silence long enough. Largely forgotten today, their movement was a unique convergence of those fighting for both women’s and labor rights. Still-relevant issues such as workplace harassment, equal pay for equal work, and the “glass ceiling” were brought to the national stage by the 9 to 5 movement. A 2020 work in progress, this new documentary was directed by Dayton filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar. Tickets are $8 each or $30 for a series pass, available at neonmovies.com.

Performance and special event information
Tickets for GLORIA: A LIFE start at $14. Prices vary depending on the day of the week and seating location. Group discounts are available for parties of 10 or more. Student tickets are available at 50% off regular adult prices and a student I.D. must be presented when picking up at the Box Office. The Sunday, March 1 7:00 p.m. performance is “Sawbuck Sunday,” when any available seat can be purchased in person for just $10 at the Loft Theatre box office two hours prior to the show. Discounts are subject to availability and some restrictions apply.

All performances are at the Metropolitan Art Center’s Loft Theatre, located at 126 North Main Street in downtown Dayton, Ohio. THE CAKE Quick Review

THE CAKE presented by Human Race Theatre Company through Nov. 17. I attended the opening Sunday matinee.

HRTC_The Cake1

Laurie Carter Rose as Della.

Ripped from the headlines, “Bakery owner refuses to make wedding cake for same sex couple.”

HRTC_The Cake2

Laurie Carter Rose as Della and Tim Lile as Tim.

That in a nut shell is the plot behind THE CAKE running at Human Race Theatre Company. While Bekah Brunstetter’s script does not take sides or bring any new arguments to the table, it does humanize the situation by making one of the brides-to-be a returning hometown girl and the daughter of a lifetime friend to the shop owner.

HRTC_The Cake3

Claire Kennedy as Jen and Candice Handy as Macy.

Laurie Carter Rose plays North Carolina bakery owner Della. Avoiding the pitfall of making her a caricature, Rose’s Della has a wise mind, a loving heart, and a great sense of humor. Jen, played solidly by Claire Kennedy, is the hometown girl pursuing the wedding of her dreams, which includes a cake baked by her late mother’s friend. Macy is Jen’s partner, an intelligent and opinionated writer from NYC. Actress Candice Handy gives Macy an external, semi-sweet calmness that belies, and at times fails, to contain her true thoughts. Two take make for a cute and believable couple. Rounding out the cast is Tim Lile in a fun turn as Della’s put-upon blue-collar husband Tim.

HRTC_The Cake4

Candice Handy as Macy and Claire Kennedy as Jen.

Director Greg Hellems brings the characters’ humanity to the forefront, allowing their beliefs to be part of who they are, but not their defining trait. The show is well-paced and emphasizes the humor which allows the audience to connect to each person as an individual.

Scenic designer Dan Gray’s excellent two-sided rotating set is dominated on one side by Della’s bakery with the opposing side split between Della and Tim’s flower-infused bedroom and Macy and Jen’s generically appointed hotel room. Jessica Pitcairn’s costume designs are spot on for each character and neither bride’s wedding gown could be any more perfect.

A charming and entertaining intermission-less production which reminds us that not all disagreements need to be settled in the court room.

My rating: 4.25 out of 5.

THE CAKE Is a Sweet Treat With an Edge

HRTC_The Cake promo

Featuring Laurie Carter Rose as Della. Publicity photo courtesy of Heather N. Powell.

The Human Race continues its Women of Influence season
with Bekah Brunstetter’s THE CAKE

(DAYTON, Ohio) Della Brady is the proud owner of Della’s Sweets, and she has been selected to compete on The Great American Baking Show. But when her best friend’s daughter comes home to North Carolina to get married, Della’s life gets turned upside down when she realizes there’s not just one bride, but two. Della’s husband, Tim, says she can’t possibly bake their wedding cake. But can she? Should she? For the first time in her life, Della is left to re-examine the beliefs she’s always held – and the foundations of her own marriage.

The Human Race Theatre Company’s Artistic Director, Kevin Moore, knew right away that this play would be an essential addition to the Women of Influence season. He says, “I fell in love with this play. While the inspiration may be taken from current headlines about discrimination, the play is less about the politics and more about how we challenge our own beliefs for the people we love. That makes for great theatre!”

THE CAKE was written by Bekah Brunstetter, a writer and co-producer on the NBC smash-hit family drama This Is Us, and she packs this play full of hilarity and compassion as she offers a prism into four different experiences of the place where love, tradition, and family expectations collide. The principal role of Della was originated by Debra Jo Rupp (That 70s Show) in both the world premiere and Off-Broadway productions.

THE CAKE stars Laurie Carter Rose as Della, Tim Lile as Tim, Claire Kennedy as Jen, and Candice Handy as Macy, and is directed by Greg Hellems.

The preview performance of THE CAKE is October 31; opening night is November 1. Both performances begin at 8 PM.

This production is sponsored by Marion’s Piazza, Ashley’s Pastry Shop, Sue Spiegel and Lisa Hanauer, Heather Bailey and Frank Scenna, Della’s Baking Class Sponsorship Club, and Anonymous Friends.

All season long, The Human Race Theatre Company is partnering with The Neon for the “Women of Influence in the Movies” series. Join us at The Neon on Monday November 4 at 7:30 pm for Saving Face. Wil is a lesbian, but she dare not tell her widowed mother or very traditional grandparents. She’s shocked to find out she’s not the only one in her family with romantic secrets when she learns her 48-year-old mother is pregnant and has just been kicked out of the family home.
