SWEENEY TODD Postponed by Greater Hamilton Civic Theatre

GHCT_logoFrom Rhonda Lucas, director

GHCT’s production of SWEENEY TODD has been postponed until sometime next season. With a cast of 30 and an orchestra of at least 17, the growing omicron variant and the fact that audiences have not come back full force yet….it was just too big of a risk for health and financial reasons at this time.

Thx to all who expressed interest in helping with crew or interested in auditioning.

Hopefully we get to slay people and bake them in pies next year.

A comedic play, to be announced will be presented in the April slot.

An infamous tale, Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns to London, seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife.

WHAT TO PREPARE
Please prepare 32 bars of an appropriate song demonstrating your vocal range. You may be asked to read from the script. You will not be asked to dance. Please bring sheet music for the accompanist that will be provided. We will also provide a speaker if you wish to sing to digitally pre-recorded music.

CASTING
The age ranges listed are the characters’ ages, not necessarily the ages of the actors:

Sweeney Todd (30s-50s): a wrongly convicted master barber; vengeful, brooding and morose with a certain cynical charm. He must have a commanding presence. Vocal range: Baritone – F2 – Gb4

Mrs. Lovett (30s-50s): an entrepreneurial and unscrupulous meat pie shop owner. She is talkative, cheerful, manipulative, devious and ambitious. Great comedic timing is necessary. Vocal range: Mezzo w/belt – G3 – E5

Anthony (20s): a naive and youthful sailor; positive demeanor, brave, romantic. Vocal range: Tenor – Bb2-F4

Johanna (needs to appear 16): Todd’s daughter and the Judge’s ward; high-spirited, full of innocence. Vocal range: Soprano – Bb3-A5

Tobias (11-18): a poor simpleton youngster apprenticed to Pirelli; loyal, truthful, innocent. Vocal range: Tenor – Bb2-Ab4.

Beggar Woman (Lucy) (30s-50s): an eerie, poor soul living on the streets; deranged and schizophrenic. Vocal range: Mezzo – Ab3 – F5

Judge Turpin (50 plus): a lecherous, corrupt and evil public official who portrays himself as sanctimonious.. Vocal range Bass – E2-Gb4

Beadle Bamford (30s-50): a pompous public official; eager, violent, unscrupulous. Vocal range: High Tenor – D3-D5

Adolfo Pirelli (20s-50s): An Irish charlatan and former employee of Todd’s who has since developed a public persona as a flashy and flamboyant Italian barber; crooked, calculating and conniving. Both Italian and Irish accents are required. Vocal range: High Tenor – B2-C5

Male & Female Ensemble: A strong ensemble needed for this show. They act as a Greek Chorus commenting on the action and augmenting the story. Some of the roles they will portray include; Storytellers, Townspeople, Police, Lunatics and Customers. The Ensemble gets ample opportunity for vocal challenges and is showcased throughout. Vocal range: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass

REHEARSALS
Rehearsals will begin the week of February 13th and will be determined based on cast availability. Sunday and Friday evening rehearsals are likely.
