Wonderettes Sock Hop is THIS SATURDAY in Washington Park

Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati Partners with ArtsWave to present an All-Ages Sock Hop
Washington Park, Saturday, April 13, 5-7 pm

Poodle skirts, saddles shoes, and hair grease, oh my! It is time to twist and shout with your favorite 50’s gals from Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati. Join the Marvelous Wonderettes and ArtsWave to wrap up the 2013 Macy’s Arts Sampler with an all-ages sock hop in Washington Park.

Dress up, get down, and ready your dancing shoes for a free and open-to-the public sock hop! ETC’s very own Marvelous Wonderettes will perform famous songs from the era and Pones, Inc. will be on hand to lead the dancing festivities.

The public is encouraged to dress for the 50s-60s time period, as we will be crowing a King and Queen of the Sock Hop, who will each win a pair of tickets to the opening night of The Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps & Gowns, the sequel to Ensemble Theatre’s best-selling show of all time!

REGIONAL PREMIERE. The season concludes with the highly anticipated sequel to Ensemble Theatre’s best selling show of all time! MARVELOUS WONDERETTES: CAPS AND GOWNS takes you to the Springfield High School graduation where we reunite with the Wonderettes, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts! As we learn about their lives and loves, and take a peek into their futures, we are treated to the girls performing classic ‘50s and ‘60s songs such as “River Deep, Mountain High,” “Dedicated To The One I Love,” “Rockin’ Robin” and over 20 other classic hits!

Get the first look at never before seen plays! “Prelude to a Premiere” is taking the stage at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, presenting two new and not-yet-produced plays for a night of staged readings.

Local playwright Joe McDonough is debuting the creation his newest plays, Morning Dancer and Spark of the Sun. The readings are free and open to the public and seating is first come, first serve. The playwright will be available at both readings and welcomes audiences comments and response both in person and through email.

ETC’s BLACK PEARL SINGS Earns LCT Nomination

Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati’s BLACK PEARL SINGS with an LCT nomination for lead actress in a play (Torie Wiggins) as well as distinguishing it as a recommended production.

Set during the Great Depression, Susannah travels the country, recording lost traditional songs. Hoping to find the one song that will bring her long-awaited recognition, she discovers Pearl Johnson in a Texas prison. With a silky, soulful voice and a wealth of African-American spiritual songs, Pearl seeks information and a chance at freedom. This moving drama chronicles a powerful story about being a woman in a man’s world, being black in a white world, and fighting for one’s soul in a world where anyone can be a commodity.

Panelists praised Torie Wiggins’ portrayal of Pearl as “consistent and transformative”; “she beautifully captured the internal struggle, humanity, humor, pain, and joy of this complex woman.” Panelists praised the overall production for “the caliber of the performances and the sensitivity of the direction”—“everyone should see it”.

BLACK PEARL SINGS continues through March 31st. Tickets can be purchased at www.ensemblecincinnati.org.

Final LCT awards will be determined at the end of the season and announced at the LCT gala in the spring.
