CINCINNATI, OH, May 4, 2016 – Cincinnati Shakespeare Company announced today during their first concrete pour event located at the future site of their new theater, that they had been selected along with the City of Cincinnati to host the 2018 Shakespeare Theatre Association Conference.  In attendance at the event were supporters, donors, and leaders involved in the project including Otto. M Budig, Mayor John Cranley, Jim Bridgeland, Calvin and Patricia Linnemann, Don Tecklenburg, and Richard Westheimer.  Also in attendance was the Executive Director of The Shakespeare Theatre Association, Patrick Flick who traveled into town to attend the event and make this announcement.

Mr. Flick said “from a roster of over 120 companies with annual budgets ranging from $50,000 to $50MM, the committee reviewed proposals from Boston, MA, Milwaukee, WI, Santa Cruz, CA, Newfoundland, Canada, and Prague in the Czech Republic, as well as Cincinnati. We are very excited by your city’s ongoing urban renaissance, thriving arts and culture scene, downtown walkability, streetcar development, centralized location, and, of course, the 2017 opening of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s brand new world-class facility in Over-the-Rhine.”

Producing Artistic Director Brian Isaac Phillips said that “Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is thrilled and proud to do their part in contributing to the cultural tourism on our city and to continue to put Cincinnati on the map!  We have had preliminary conversations with the Cincinnati Visitor’s Bureau, local hotels, Cincinnati USA Chamber, and ArtsWave to begin planning this conference to ensure that our national and international guests experience the best of what Cincinnati has to offer. Our organization is thrilled to be able to host this conference and believe it will have a ripple effect that will benefit our city’s restaurants, hotels, and other fantastic attractions.”

The Shakespeare Theatre Association provides a forum for the artistic, managerial, educational leadership for theatres primarily involved with the production of the works of William Shakespeare to discuss issues and methods of work, resources, and information, and to act as an advocate for Shakespearean productions and training.  Cincinnati Shakespeare Company has sent leaders to the conference for several years and recognizes the importance.  Mr. Flick said that “the annual conference is a vital opportunity for the leadership of the STA member theatres to network, share best practices, cross-pollinate talent, and raise international awareness of the ongoing relevancy of Shakespeare’s plays in the 21st century.”

Mr. Flick concluded saying that “we look forward to working with Cincinnati Shakespeare and the City of Cincinnati on welcoming the international Shakespeare community to Cincinnati and celebrating the inaugural year in their new space.”

The conference will take place in January of 2018 during the inaugural first season in Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s new theater.  More details will be released in the future.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Concludes the Season by Pairing Shakespeare’s Epic Roman Plays, JULIUS CAESAR and ANTHONY AND CLEOPATRA

Julius Caesar is brilliant general, a cunning politician, and the most beloved leader Rome has ever known; but when his ambition threatens to topple the Republic, a small conspiracy of Roman patriots take matters into their own hands. When they assassinate the beloved Caesar on the senate floor, their actions plunge the Republic into a civil war that will test friendships, try loyalties, and determine the fate of an empire. Presented in full Roman regalia and flair, Shakespeare’s breathless political thriller “Julius Caesar” returns to the CSC stage as the first installment of a special two part theatrical event with “Antony and Cleopatra”.

This is a rare opportunity for Cincinnati audiences to experience these 2 productions. Although Shakespeare wrote his Roman history plays roughly eight years apart (“Julius Caesar” in 1599-1600 and “Antony and Cleopatra” in 1606-1607), they represent a record of continuous history, with many of the same characters appearing in both. The Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Resident Ensemble makes it possible to present these plays using the same ensemble members in both productions! Rick Pender of CityBeat says “because Cincy Shakes employs a resident ensemble of actors who live and work in Greater Cincinnati, it can feature the same performers in both productions, providing a kind of connective tissue that will add greater depth for audiences that get to see the two closely juxtaposed shows.”

Both of Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s productions of “Julius Caesar” and “Antony and Cleopatra” were selected to be a part of Shakespeare in American Communities, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is one of 40 professional theater companies selected to participate in bringing the finest productions of Shakespeare to middle- and high-school students in communities across the United States. This is the thirteen year of this national program, the largest tour of Shakespeare in American history.  This additional funding has allowed Cincinnati Shakespeare Company to welcome 100s more students at no or low cost to experience these productions during the school day or at evening performances alongside of extra educational activities made available by CSC.

“Antony and Cleopatra” welcomes the Cincinnati debut of Chantal Jean-Pierre in the title role of Cleopatra. She previously appeared as Cleopatra in Orlando Shakespeare Theater’s production of “Antony and Cleopatra” to which the Orlando Sentential called her a “magnificent, mercurial Cleopatra of actress Chantal Jean-Pierre […] makes a grand entrance… she’s as all-encompassing as her desert empire – a girl at heart, with emotions that change on a dime, and also a woman so strong and serene that she embraces death with a smile.  It’s a charismatic performance.”  She has also performed with Folger Shakespeare (Goneril in “King Lear”), Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (Hostess/Alice in “Henry V”) , American Globe Theater (Gertrude in “Hamlet”), New York Classical Theatre (Olivia in “Twelfth Night”), Wertheim Performing Arts Center (Paulina in “The Winter’s Tale”) and many more.  Her TV credits include “We Are New York”, “One Life to Live”, and “All My Children.”  Learn more at www.chantaljean-pierre.com.

Performances of “Julius Caesar” are scheduled from April 8- May 7, 2016 on Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm as well as on Saturday May 7 at 2pm. There is no performance on Sunday April 10.  Preview performances are on Wednesday April 6 and Thursday April 7 at 7:30pm and tickets are $25.

There is no performance on Sunday May 15.  Preview performances are on Wednesday May 11 and Thursday May 12 at 7:30pm and tickets are $25.

Discounts are available to patrons purchasing both shows. By using code “EPIC”, patrons will receive $10 off per pair of tickets when they purchase a ticket to “Julius Caesar” and “Antony and Cleopatra” at the same time.

The 2016-2017 Season line-up is as follows:

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK
by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett
adapted by Wendy Kesselman
September 9- October 1, 2016
In a tiny attic in Amsterdam in 1944, two families of Jewish refugees hide in silence from the Nazi Regime below.  Unable to speak for fear of being discovered, the young Anne Frank tells her story by writing in her diary. The Diary of Anne Frank is a harrowingly intimate view of history’s greatest atrocity as seen through the eyes of one extraordinary young girl.  The chronicle of her family’s experience endures as both a condemning indictment of man’s capacity for cruelty and a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit.

THE ELEPHANT MAN
By Bernard Pomerance
October 14- November 5, 2016
This Tony Award winning play tells the true life tale of Joseph Merrick, whose severe physical deformities landed him in a Victorian freak-show. Joseph is rescued by Frederick Treves, a young doctor who discovers that behind the disfigured visage, lies not an animal, but an intelligent mind and a sensitive soul. As their friendship develops, Frederick endeavors to show the world to Joseph, who discovers it is both more beautiful and more cruel than he could have imagined.

William Shakespeare’s
MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
November 18- December 10, 2016
Beatrice and Benedick are the perfect match. It’s too bad they can’t stand each other. When their war of wits comes to a head, their friends decide there’s only one thing to be done- trick the hapless couple into falling hopelessly love. They set in motion a series of plots, pranks, plans and ploys all designed to bring the cynical Benedick and spirited Beatrice into a “mountain of affection.” Will their scheming succeed, or will it all be Much Ado About Nothing?

William Shakespeare’s
HENRY VI: The Wars of the Roses Continues
January 20- February 11, 2017
The History Cycle spirals towards its inevitable end in the penultimate chapter of Shakespeare’s greatest saga. Sides have been chosen and loyalties tested as the Wars of the Roses rage on. The houses of York and Lancaster contend for control of the kingdom, and in the midst of the chaos a certain hunch-backed hellion begins his infamous maneuverings to win the crown. Paired with the upcoming production of Richard III, this theatrical event is not to be missed!

William Shakespeare’s
RICHARD III
February 17- March 11, 2017
Shakespeare’s game of thrones enters its endgame as the history cycle’s final chapter takes the stage. The ruthless, remorseless and relentless Richard Plantaganet has his eyes set on the throne of England, and he makes the happy earth his hell as he carves a bloody swath through all that stands in his way. The History Cycle comes to its thrilling conclusion with the story of England’s most murderous monarch, Richard III.

March 24- April 15, 2017
A RAISIN IN THE SUN
By Lorraine Hansberry
A Raisin in the Sun tells the story of the Youngers, a working class family in 1950s Chicago. When an unexpected financial windfall gives them the opportunity for a better life, conflicts within the family and pressures from without threaten to shatter their opportunity at the American dream. The recipient of four Tony Award nominations, A Raisin in the Sun is a true masterpiece of the American stage.

April 28- May 20, 2017
William Shakespeare’s
THE TEMPEST
Betrayed and exiled to a deserted island, with only his books and his infant daughter for company, the magician Prospero has spent years plotting his revenge. When fate places all his old enemies within his reach, Prospero summons a magical storm that brings them crashing down onto his shores. This romantic tale replete with magic and monsters, love and liquor, and retribution and redemption is a voyage you won’t want to miss.
