A sequel to “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company partners with New York Classical Theatre to premiere this play in Cincinnati before it moves to Off-Broadway in New York City in March!

Cincinnati, January 26, 2023 – Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is thrilled to partner with New York Classical Theatre to present “The Rewards of Being Frank,” a world premiere production that revisits the world of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest.” The play, written by Alice Scovell, premieres on CSC’s stage from January 27 – February 18, 2023, after which, will move to Off-Broadway in New York City and is directed by New York Classic Theatre’s Founding Artistic Director, Stephen Burdman. Stephen is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. The Design Sponsors for “The Rewards of Being Frank” are Barnes Dennig and Stock Yards Bank and the Tea Sponsors are Rick and Melissa Eder.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s Producing Artistic Director, Brian Isaac Phillips, and New York Classical Theatre’s Founding Artistic Director, Stephen Burdman connected through the Shakespeare Theatre Association, an organization that provides a forum for the artistic, managerial, and educational leadership for theatres primarily involved with the production of the works of William Shakespeare. The partnership allowed for both organizations to share resources and bring this new play to life, first on stage in Cincinnati and then in New York City.  After the production closes at CSC on February 18, the entire set, costumes, cast, and crew will transfer to NYC to present a run Off-Broadway at A.R.T New York Mezzanine Theatre at 502 W. 53rd St, New York, NY 10019 from March 3-26, 2023!

“The Rewards of Being Frank” features the legendary Christine Pedi, known for her roles in Broadway’s “Chicago,” “Talk Radio”, and Off-Broadway’s “Forbidden Broadway.” In addition to Pedi, “The Rewards of Being Frank” features visiting actors from New York Moboluwaji Ademide Akintilo (NY Classical’s “The Importance of Being Earnest (Two Ways)”, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”) as Frank, James Evans (The McKittrick Hotel’s “The Woman in Black”) as Algernon, Tora Nogami Alexander (The Acting Company’s “Twelfth Night”) as Cecily. Beloved CSC veterans Kelly Mengelkoch and Jeremy Dubin take the stage as well, playing Gwendolyn and Ernest, respectively.

Oscar Wilde’s much-loved comic masterpiece “The Importance of Being Earnest” finally receives an uproarious sequel in this world premiere.  Shenanigans ensue when lovebirds Algy and Cecily and Ernest and Gwendolen are revisited 7 years after their nuptials.  As the young couples are on the search for a new schoolmaster to instruct their children, they must avoid the pitfalls of mistaken identity, monetary mischief, and a timeless struggle over cucumber sandwiches.

Scenic design is by Samantha Reno (Cincinnati Shakespeare Company), costume design is by Rainy Edwards (Cincinnati Shakespeare Company), lighting design is by Justen N. Locke (Cincinnati Shakespeare Company), and sound design is by Alex Brock (Great River Shakespeare Festival, Utah Shakespeare Festival). Associate Lighting Designer (NY Classical) is Deborah Constantine. Properties Designer is Kara Eble Trusty (Cincinnati Shakespeare Company). Casting Director is Stephanie Klapper. Voice/Speech Coach is Sarah Summerwell. Production Stage Manager is Elizabeth Robinson. Assistant Stage Manager at CSC is Brenna Bishop.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Rings in the Holiday Season With Two Classics, LITTLE WOMEN and EVERY CHRISTMAS STORY EVER TOLD

There is something for everyone this holiday season at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company with Kate Hamill’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women” playing Nov. 11- Dec. 3, 2022 followed by the annual holiday blockbuster comedy “Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and Then Some!)” Dec. 8-31, 2022

Cincinnati, November 7, 2022 – Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is pleased to announce more details on their upcoming productions this November and December.  CSC celebrates the holiday season with two beloved holiday classics: the wintery and warm “Little Women” by Kate Hamill, adapted from the novel by Louisa May Alcott, and their annual smash hit, “Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!)” by Michael Carleton, James Fitzgerald, and John K. Alvarez.

Kate Hamill, the same playwright behind last season’s bestseller “Pride and Prejudice,” brings “Little Woman,” another literary favorite, to the stage in a fresh and unexpected adaptation. This cherished story of sisterhood, growing up, and Christmastime, is perfect for the whole family. “Little Women” is directed by Jemma Alix Levy and stars Elizabeth Chinn Molloy as the beloved Jo March.  Jemma directed Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s 2019 production of “Miss Holmes” to great acclaim. She will return to direct this season’s upcoming 2023 production of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.”

Louisa May Alcott’s treasured classic, “Little Women” tells the enduring story of the March family and their four daughters; romantic Meg, shy Beth, willful Amy, and of course, fiery and independent Jo.  Through the intertwining lives of the sisters, we see the familiar hardships, heartbreak, humor, and humility of these passionate and unique young women.  “Little Women” enchants new generations with the regional premiere of this new adaptation. The design of this production is sponsored by Pete and Ginger Strange.

“Little Women” runs from November 11-December 3, 2022. Performances of “Little Women” are on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 PM, with two Saturday matinees on November 26 and December 3, and two Sunday matinees on November 20 and 27. CSC offers performances with accessible resources, including an Audio Described performance on Friday, November 18 at 7:30 PM and a Sign Language Interpreted performance on Saturday, December 3 at 2:00 PM.

Following “Little Women,” CSC’s holiday smash hit “Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!)” is back again for another season of holiday hilarity! What begins as another annual production of “A Christmas Carol,” soon devolves into a slightly irreverent look at all of our favorite “Beloved Holiday Classics” including pop culture favorites like “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Rudolph,” “Charlie Brown” and more! Add in topical references that always keep this annual tradition fresh and fun as we send up everything from Dickens to Dr. Seuss in an evening of high octane jollity and frivolity. The design of this production is sponsored by Bartlett Wealth Management. And the Fruitcake Sponsor is Water Tower Fines Wines.

“Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and Then Some!)” is a show best enjoyed by adults and older teens; it is not recommended for any theatergoers young enough to believe in Santa Claus. Perfect for date nights, families with older children and teens, and outings with friends, attending the show becomes an experience. Theatergoers are encouraged to arrive with Christmas sweaters and Santa hats and enjoy festive drinks at the lobby bar before (and during) the show!

“Every Christmas Story Ever Told” runs from December 8-31, 2022. Performances are Thursdays through Sundays at 7:30 PM with one Monday performance on December 19 and two Wednesday performances on December 21 and 28. Matinees at 2:00 PM are also available on December 5, 11, 17, 18, and 31. CSC offers performances with accessible resources, including an Audio Described performance on Friday, December 16 at 7:30 PM and a Sign Language Interpreted performance on Saturday, December 31 at 2:00 PM.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company also offers the opportunity to think outside the gift box and give experiences as presents. Gift Certificates for your selected amount can be redeemed on tickets, subscriptions, classes, summer camp, and more, becoming the perfect present for everyone from students to adult theatergoers. Available for purchase online and same-day pick up in the lobby at CSC.  Learn more about holiday gifting at http://www.cincyshakes.com/gift.
