THE THANKSGIVING PLAY
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park
March 23-April 21
Shelterhouse Theater [Eden Park]

Directed by Lisa Portes

Cast: Jennifer Bareilles as Logan, Nat DeWolf as Caden, Ashley Austin Morris as Alicia & Scott Parkinson as Jaxton

Watch as a group of liberal artists walk the fine line of political correctness in this fresh, satirical comedy. Armed with progressive lingo and questionably good intentions, they attempt to devise a culturally sensitive Thanksgiving play for local elementary schools. Slowly but surely, the well-meaning plans dissolve into an outrageous sendup of PC behavior. THE THANKSGIVING PLAY treads the minefields of appropriation to inject some laughter into activism, apathy and all the assumptions in between. Advisory: THE THANKSGIVING PLAY is suitable for adults and teenage audiences. This biting satire contains mature themes and mild adult language about America’s sometimes troubling history. It also contains some questionable Thanksgiving reenactments. Be advised: no turkeys will be harmed in the making of this play.

Playhouse Stages August Wilson Masterpiece Beginning March 2

TWO TRAINS RUNNING explores the lives of ordinary people during the civil rights movement

CINCINNATI – Beginning March 2, history unfolds around everyday lives in August Wilson’s TWO TRAINS RUNNING at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. Part of Wilson’s American Century Cycle, the masterpiece play portrays ordinary people swept up in a rapidly changing world against the backdrop of the civil rights movement. TWO TRAINS RUNNING is presented in the Marx Theatre by Moe and Jack Rouse and Randolph Wadsworth through March 30. Opening night is Thursday, March 7.

Wilson is widely regarded as the world’s foremost African-American playwright and as one of the most important and influential voices in the history of theatre. He won both a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for his 1987 play, Fences. He won his second Pulitzer Prize in 1990 for The Piano Lesson. Wilson’s American Century Cycle is a trailblazing 10-play series about the African-American experience. From 1979 to 2004, he wrote one play for each decade of the 20th century.

Variety stated that TWO TRAINS RUNNING was “perfection… a work by a writer at the peak of his powers.”

Set in Pittsburgh’s Hill District in a local diner in 1969, long-time regulars gather to gossip, flirt and play by the numbers. The owner must decide whether or let the city take over his building or sell it to a shrewd, local businessman.

Playhouse Associate Artist Timothy Douglas, who directs the production, is one of the country’s preeminent directors of Wilson’s plays. Douglas has directed several productions of Wilson’s work, including the Playhouse’s 2016 production of Jitney.

“When August Wilson’s plays first came on to the scene, one of the major impacts was in filling the void that was the lack of authentic black lives and voices on mainstream American stages,” explains Douglas. “August Wilson’s works are unapologetically pro-black, which is the polar opposite of being anti-white, and it is because of this reality — by way of his plays, characters and dynamic use of language — he is able to convey universal truths.”

The play explores topics such as inequality and injustice, balanced with moments of humor and optimism. Though it marks the seventh play of Wilson’s American Century Cycle, TWO TRAINS RUNNING stands on its own, painting a compassionate portrait of ordinary people in the midst of transformation.

“Off the Grid” for One-Night-Only at Newport Aquarium

For one night only, audiences can immerse themselves directly in the action of a theatrical adventure when Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park goes off the grid for 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA at Newport Aquarium on Friday, March 15. Tickets are now available for three performances at 6:30, 9 and 10:15 p.m.

“Newport Aquarium will be transformed into the Nautilus, Captain Nemo’s scientific marvel of a submarine,” explains Daunielle Rasmussen, director of the production and director of education and community engagement for the Playhouse. “The performance will be a progressive play experience, meaning audience members will journey through the Nautilus as members of the Orka Fleet, tasked to apprehend the elusive war criminal known as Captain Nemo. In this immersive production of 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, audience members become part of the action and go on a journey that will lead them into uncharted waters.”

The performance, written by Ryan Underbakke and Nick Ryan and based on the book by Jules Verne, is part of the Playhouse’s Off the Grid series. Off the Grid brings interactive, creative experiences to the community, specifically aimed at young professionals. Off the Grid events all happen out in the community, away from the Playhouse’s Eden Park facility, and have included interactive movie events, live board games and themed pub crawls.

“20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA is our biggest Off the Grid event to date and the culmination of three years of experimentation into what sorts of interactive experiences resonate most,” Rasmussen says.

Tickets for the performance, recommended for audiences 10 years and older, are $30. Audience members will stand and move throughout the performance and no seating is available, but the interactive performance is wheelchair accessible. For an additional $20 per person, audiences ages 21 and up will gain access to a VIP Party (also at Newport Aquarium) from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. with a live DJ playing music throughout the evening, as well as light-bite appetizers and a complimentary drink ticket.

Off the Grid is supported by the generosity of the thousands of young professional contributors to the ArtsWave Campaign.
