Anna Ziegler’s ACTUALLY Comes to Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre

Play encourages audiences to examine complicated truths

CINCINNATI – Award-winning American playwright Anna Ziegler’s characters will come to life in the thought-provoking production of ACTUALLY in the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre from March 21 through April 26, with opening night on March 26. This provocative new play finds its finger on the pulse of a generation that’s grappling with the deep complexities of gender, race and consent and will inspire audiences to discuss these themes for days to come.

ACTUALLY follows two freshman students at Princeton University, Amber and Tom, who party heavily to cope with mounting pressures until one shared evening of flirting and drinking ends in a sexual encounter that may or may not have been consensual. Before either can fully grasp what actually happened, they’re swept up in the nerve-rattling university judicial process that changes the course of both their lives.

Ziegler calls the backdrop of ACTUALLY “hugely important” yet also “beside the point.” She writes in an author’s note, “The play, to me, not only holds up a mirror to a certain moment in time… but also hopefully speaks to a larger and more timeless question about who we are as men and as women and what forces drive our actions.”

ACTUALLY is directed by Cincinnati-based theatre director Bridget Leak, who has worked frequently with local theatres to stage productions that address the subject of sexual violence. The production also features Tyler Fauntleroy as Tom and Remy Zaken as Amber, both of whom are making their debut at the Playhouse.

“As a play about an allegation, Ziegler is not asking us who is right and who is wrong, but how both can be both right and wrong,” says Leak. “It is a huge challenge to delicately find that balance and to constantly shift the power between these two actors. I want the audience to really grapple with who they sympathize with. I want them to reflect on their own biases and maybe shift their empathy. I think this 90-minute piece could inspire hours of conversation.”

DESTINY OF DESIRE
Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park
Feb. 29-March 28
Marx Theatre [Eden Park]

Directed by Jose Luis Valenuela

Burning passion, cunning deception and outrageous melodrama combine in this enormously entertaining homage to Latin American soap operas. A storm brews in the small town of Bellarica, Mexico, when two baby girls are born on the same night in the same hospital. One will have wealth and privilege, and the other will live in poverty. Yet the drama is bound to unfold when a former beauty queen switches the babies at birth in her lust for power. Eighteen years later, fate finds the two girls together again, prompting secrets to be revealed and lies to be unraveled. After all, nothing is impossible in Bellarica! Suitable for adults and older teenage audiences. This Latin-American melodrama features everything there is to love about soap operas: forbidden romance, sexual content, plenty of plotting and scheming, and moments of overly dramatic violence.

Cincinnati Playhouse Brings Classic STUART LITTLE to Family Audiences Throughout Greater Cincinnati Through Feb. 16

New Off the Hill series production now open, will visit Oxford, Covington, Mt. Washington, Clifton and more

PIP_Stuart LIttle

CINCINNATI – Embark on an adventure as the Playhouse presents its second Off the Hill touring production this season with E.B. White’s endearing classic STUART LITTLE. This charming adaptation follows the marvelous maneuverings of a mouse in New York City who is trying to survive in the great, big world. Performed by members of the Bruce E. Coyle Intern company, the delightful adventures of Stuart Little will run now through Feb. 16.

STUART LITTLE is widely recognized as a classic in children’s literature. In the Playhouse’s production, Stuart escapes from a ferocious dog, protects his friend from their devious pet cat and wins a model boat race at Central Park. Approaching every obstacle with confidence and courage, Stuart teaches us, as he says in the show, that “size has nothing to do with it. It’s temperament and ability that count and knowing what’s important.”

STUART LITTLE explores the themes of “difference, friendship, family, loyalty and adventure,” explains Director Dee Anne Bryll. “When Stuart goes in search of his friend, Margalo, he suddenly becomes aware of the challenges of his size. However, he doesn’t let that stop him…He embraces the many different experiences, people and animals that he meets along his journey.”

This heartwarming production is touring the greater Cincinnati area now and is recommended for children 5 and up.

For more information and a full schedule of stops including Mt. Washington, Oxford, Covington, Clifton, Evendale and more, visit cincyplay.com.

Seasonal support of education and outreach programming is provided by The Robert and Adele Schiff Family Foundation. Support for Off the Hill is provided by KeyBank and The John C. Griswold Foundation. The Bruce E. Coyle Acting Intern Company is supported by Jerry and Betsy Shroat, as well as Ron Bunt and Wei Sun.

The Playhouse is supported by the generosity of almost 40,000 contributors to the ArtsWave Community campaign. The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation.
