Auditions Announced for THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS THE MUSICAL at Cincinnati Music Theatre

CMTCincinnati Music Theatre announces auditions for their Studio Theatre Series production of THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS THE MUSICAL

A musical tribute to, and loving spoof of, the composing styles and shows of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Kander and Ebb, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and musical theatre in general.

Directed by Dennis Murphy

  • Saturday, November 3, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, November 4, 7:00-10:00 p.m.

Clifton United Methodist Church
3416 Clifton Avenue (just north of Clifton and Ludlow)

The cast calls for 2 men and 2 women performers and an ensemble of 4 voices. The performers in The Musical of Musicals are presenting not one, but five, 15-minute musicals. Each musical uses the same plotline which is based on the standard melodrama plot of a villainous landlord threatening a helpless maiden who can’t pay her rent until the handsome hero steps in and pays it for her.  In all five musicals, the soprano is always the heroine, the tenor is always the hero, the baritone is always the villain and the mezzo is always the character actress.  The mini-musicals are each written “in the style of “ Rogers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Kander and Ebb.  The characters in each musical are drawn from all of the composer’s shows.

In addition to the four main roles, there is an opportunity to use 2 men and 2 woman to join in the fun as Dream Ballet dancers, wedding guests, roller skaters, Kit Kat Klub girls and more. All of the performers must be versatile actors who can play a variety of characters, sing and dance in the style of each of the composing teams.  It is helpful if they also have a broad knowledge of the works of each of the composers. Age is not as important as being able to capture a sense of each character and knowing what makes the character funny.

To sign up for an audition slot and to download required forms, visit https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b054fa5a92fa5f49-audition.

Performance dates are Feb. 8-16.

CMT_Master Class logo

CMT is excited to announce a Master Class on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 7:30 PMwith Broadway’s Richard Oberacker, composer and co-lyricist/librettist of the Tony Award-winning musical Bandstand, and the musical conductor of “KA” by Cirque Du Soleil at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. This unique experience is open to the public and will offer a rare view inside the process of performing, dissecting, analyzing and directing a musical theater song at the professional level.

In traditional master class format, individual singers will present a song and work one-on-one with Drama Desk Award-nominated Cincinnati native Richard Oberacker, who will help each participant explore their musical piece in depth, developing and using techniques that will achieve the most truthful and authentic performance. This is a rare opportunity to learn and grow with the guidance of a professional composer, author and conductor who has worked “behind the table” in the creation, casting, and performance of theater in regional theaters, national tours, and on Broadway. The class will be accompanied by Steve Goers, a member of the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music musical theatre faculty and composer, pianist and producer.

For those interested in being a participant, online submission information can be found at http://cincinnatimusictheatre.org/masterclassform/ and submissions are due October 1, 2018. If selected, there is a $40.00 required donation for participants. Please note that applicants will be selected by a committee from Cincinnati Music Theatre; Mr. Oberacker will not see your application or audition video. All proceeds from the Master Class will benefit the Cincinnati Music Theatre Scholarship Fund.

Tickets are $25.00 for general admission. Tickets are available now at CincinnatiArts.org, (513) 621-ARTS [2787], and the Aronoff Center Ticket Office.
