I LOVE LUCY® LIVE ON STAGE is the brand-new hit stage show adapted from the most beloved program in television history! America’s favorite foursome – Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel – is live on stage and in color for the very first time!

Thea Brooks and Euriamis Losada lead the company as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, with Kevin Remington and Lori Hammel playing Fred and Ethel Mertz, the Ricardo’s loveable landlords and sidekicks. The cast also includes Sara Jayne Blackmore, Sarah Elizabeth Combs, Gregory Franklin,Jody Madaras, Carlos Martin, Denise Moses, Cindy Sciacca, Kami Seymour, Richard Strimer and Mark Christopher Tracy.

An “out-of-body experience for ‘Lucy’ fans” according to Showbiz Chicago. I LOVE LUCY® LIVE ON STAGE takes audience members back to 1952 as members of the Desilu Playhouse studio audience where they await the filming of two hilarious and oh-so-familiar I LOVE LUCY® episodes, “The Benefit” and “Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined.” A charming host entertains and enlightens the crowd to the behind-the-scenes filming process of a brand new thing called “television,” the Crystaltone Singers perform advertising jingles in perfect 50s style harmony and the sidesplitting antics of America’s favorite foursome – Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel.  It’s a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience TV Guide’s William Keck calls “the most entertaining stage production I’ve seen in years – including Broadway!”

I LOVE LUCY® LIVE ON STAGE is staged and directed by Rick Sparksand adapted for the stage with new material by Kim Flagg and Rick Sparks. The creative team also includes Wayne Moore (music arrangements and special lyrics), Andy Belling (music direction), Peitor Angell (original music), Aaron Henderson (scenic design), Shon LeBlanc & Kelly Bailey(costume design), David George (lighting design), Cricket S. Myers(sound design), Diane Martinous (original hair/wig design), Judi Lewin(hair/wig design), Karina Branson (make-up design) and Allen McMullen(production stage management).

The I LOVE LUCY® LIVE ON STAGE on-stage band comprises Andy Belling (musical director, conductor and first keyboard), Bryan Miller(assistant conductor and second keyboard), Ron Barrows (trumpet), Dave Lotfi (drums/conga), David Olivas (saxophone/flute) and Nicholas Stankus (bass/banjo).

The iconic hit sitcom I LOVE LUCY® originally aired on CBS from 1951 – 1957 for a total of six seasons and 179 episodes and is widely considered to be one of the most popular programs in the history of television. Due in no small part to its relatable characters, sharp comedic writing and Lucille Ball’s signature zany charm, the show continues to endear new audiences with every passing generation. The program was a technical trailblazer, pioneering the multi-camera shooting technique (still employed by the majority of traditional sitcoms to this day) and the use of 35mm film for the capture of a weekly, 30-minute scripted television program (which made possible the re-airing of episodes at a later date, what we now know as “reruns”). In September 2012,  I LOVE LUCY® was named the “Best TV Show Of All Time” and the “Greatest TV Comedy” by People Magazine and ABC’s “20/20” special “Best in TV: The Greatest TV Shows of Our Time.”

I LOVE LUCY® LIVE ON STAGE had its world premiere in Los Angeles at the Greenway Court Theatre from October 2011 – February 2012. A subsequent Chicago production was launched that played two engagements at the Broadway Playhouse, September 2012 – March 2013. The 2013-2014 national tour visited cities including Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia, Nashville and Costa Mesa.

The show is produced by Stephen Kahn (executive producer), David George (executive producer), Allan Williams (executive producer), Jeff Davis (executive producer), Dede Harris, Sharon Karmizan, Hyra George, Kim Flagg, Barbara Alpert, Sophie and Alan Alpert, Neil Hoffman, Nancy Alpert, Teri Alpert and David Carpenter (associate producer), under license from CBS Consumer Products.

ABOUT THE LION KING

In its 18th year, THE LION KING remains ascendant as one of the most popular stage musicals in the world.  Since its Broadway premiere on November 13, 1997, 22 global productions have been seen by more than 75 million people and, cumulatively, run a staggering 112 years.  Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions (under the direction of Thomas Schumacher), THE LION KING is only the second show in history to generate five productions worldwide running 10 or more years.  Translated into seven different languages (Japanese, German, Korean, French, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese), productions of THE LION KING can currently be seen on Broadway,  London’s West End, Hamburg, Tokyo, Madrid, Sao Paulo, Sydney, Australia  and on tour across North America, the U.K., and Japan.  The Australian production marks the tenth concurrent worldwide production of THE LION KING, the highest number of productions running at any one time in the show’s history.  Having played 19 countries on every continent except Antarctica, THE LION KING’s worldwide gross exceeds that of any film, Broadway show or other entertainment title in box office history.

THE LION KING won six 1998 Tony Awards®:  Best Musical, Best Scenic Design (Richard Hudson), Best Costume Design (Julie Taymor), Best Lighting Design (Donald Holder), Best Choreography (Garth Fagan) and Best Direction of a Musical.  THE LION KING has also earned more than 70 major arts awards including the 1998 NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, the 1999 Grammy® for Best Musical Show Album, the 1999 Evening Standard Award for Theatrical Event of the Year and the 1999 Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Choreography and Best Costume Design.

The show’s director, costume designer and mask co-designer Julie Taymor continues to play an integral part in the show’s ongoing success.  The first woman to win a Tony Award for Direction of a Musical, Taymor has in recent years supervised new productions of the show around the world.

The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from The Lion King animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice; additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer; and music from “Rhythm of the Pride Lands,” an album inspired by the original music in the film, written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer.  The resulting sound of THE LION KING is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, ranging from the Academy Award®-winning song “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” to the haunting ballad “Shadowland.”

The book has been adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed The Lion King animated feature, and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay.  Other members of the creative team include:  Michael Curry, who designed the masks and puppets with Taymor, Steve Canyon Kennedy (sound design), Michael Ward (hair and makeup design), John Stefaniuk (associate director), Marey Griffith (associate choreographer), Clement Ishmael (music supervisor) and Doc Zorthian (production supervisor). Anne Quart serves as associate producer.

ONCE presented by Broadway in Cincinnati through Nov. 23. Click here for more information on the production. I attended the opening night performance.

It is easy to write about the technical aspects of the show. But it is when I try to go beyond that, and talk about my emotional response to the show that I start to have trouble. First of all, “emotional response” isn’t really accurate. The story, music and performances seems to open the door to your emotional-memory and allows you to re-experience your personal emotions that resonate in harmony with the action on stage.

The second song of the show, “Falling Slowly,” establishes the strong connection between the two leads, simply referred to as Guy and Girl. Through the music and the emotion, I became part of that initial connection and immediately became invested in their happiness and success.

When “Falling Slowly” is reprised as the show’s final number, it’s an amazing, heartfelt goodbye that is moving and satisfying.

The ensemble are extremely talented musicians, great entertainers and strong actors. Dani de Wall as Girl is mesmerizing to watch, and Stuart Ward is kind and charismatic as Guy. Their chemistry together is wonderful. Of the other characters in the show, Evan Harrington as Billy and Donna Garner as Baruska (Girl’s mother) were personal favorites.

ONCE is one of the most uniquely staged productions I have ever seen. The set is three walls, with a bar upstage and seating along the side walls for the ensemble, who also play all the music. It is Natasha Katz’s excellent lighting design that transforms the open space between the three walls into the various locations, at times giving an ethereal quality to a scene. The lighting also includes a few surprises you will just have to see for yourself. Director John Tiffany creates many, beautiful stage pictures and the choreographed movement by Steve Hoggett is visually captivating. Most of the scene changes are choreographed and many have their own musical accompaniment. Even the pacing has its own tempo that refuses to be rushed.

Unfortunately it’s the sound execution that kept the opening night performance from being a perfect experience. Individual mics, especially the leads, were too low. Between the accents and at times, the speed of delivery, it was difficult to understand some dialogue and even more lyrics. This was a complaint I overheard from many people during intermission.

ONCE is simply beautiful, and beautiful in its simplicity. I was enthralled and would gladly see this remarkable theatrical experience again.

My rating: 4.90 out of 5

Caveat: I have seen on social media that some people had a negative reaction to the show. The common complaint seems to the be that the stage adaptation doesn’t do justice to the movie. (That is not to say that everyone who saw the movie, didn’t enjoy the play.)  I have not seen the movie I truly enjoyed the production. Make of that what you will.

I would enjoy hearing what you think about the show or my review. All I ask is that you express your opinion without attacking someone else’s opinion. You can post your comments below.
