Plays Focused on Strength, Resilience and the Endurance of the Human Spirit

(Newport, KY) — Falcon Theatre Producing Artistic Director, Ted J. Weil, announced today the continuation of live, in-person performances when the Newport, Kentucky theatre company opens its 2022-23 Season, presenting a mix of contemporary works and regional U.S. premieres.

The U.S. regional premiere of The Half-Life of Marie Curie by Lauren Gunderson (Silent Sky, The Revolutionists) revels in the strength of female friendship between two fearless scientists during the heights and depths of their careers.

The Half-Life of Marie Curie tells the story of Marie Curie, who won the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her discovery of the elements radium and polonium. Within a year of her scientific triumph, she was the object of ruthless gossip over an alleged affair with a married Frenchman, all but erasing her achievements from public memory. Weakened and demoralized by an unrelenting and unforgiving press, Marie joins her friend and colleague Hertha Ayrton, an electromechanical engineer and suffragette, to recover from the scandal at Hertha’s seaside retreat on the British coast, their journey to persevere and heal reveals the strength that can be found in others.

Following a celebrated revival on Broadway, Falcon presents the ground-breaking drama Betrayal by Harold Pinter (The Dumb Waiter, Moonlight). Betrayal is a presentation of human resilience as its three characters navigate the aftermath of their lives following the end of a tumultuous love triangle.

The play begins in the present, with the meeting of Emma and Jerry, whose adulterous affair of seven years has long since ended. Emma’s marriage to Robert, Jerry’s best friend, is now ending and she needs someone in whom to confide. Their reminiscences reveal that Robert knew of their affair all along and, to Jerry’s dismay, regarded it with total nonchalance. In a series of contiguous scenes, the play moves backward in time, from the end of the affair to its beginning, throwing into relief the little lies and oblique remarks that reveal more than direct statements or actions ever could.

Human strength takes center stage in Every Brilliant Thing by Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe, a heart-wrenching yet humorous play about depression and the lengths we will go to for those we love.

You’re six years old. Mum’s in the hospital and Dad says it’s because she’s “done something stupid”. She finds it hard to be happy. So, you start to make a list of everything that’s brilliant about the world – everything that makes life worth living. In this acclaimed show, a child attempts to cure their mother’s depression by creating a list of the best things in the world. The list grows as they progress from childhood (ice cream) and adolescence (Star Trek), to college (surprises) and marriage (falling in love). But, when life deals a bitter blow, the list proves to be helpful to them in ways that it could never be for their mother. 

The Lifespan of a Fact is based on the stirring true story of John d’Agata’s essay, “What Happens There,” about the Las Vegas suicide of teenager Levi Presley. Written by a trio of playwrights (Jeremy Kareken & David Murrell and Gordon Farrell), this contemporary drama is propelled by human resilience and determination for truth.

What starts professional, quickly becomes profane in this fast-paced play that hurtles through a few crucial days in the lives of a writer, fact-checker, and editor as opposing ideologies collide in a battle of highly intellectual combatants. The clock races as the three characters debate facts, artistic license, and the need to tell a good story as the decision looms whether to publish against an approaching Monday morning deadline that could make or break their struggling magazine – and their careers.

Flyin’ West by Pearl Cleage (Blues for an Alabama Sky, A Song for Coretta) explores the strength and endurance of four African-American women who overcame tremendous odds to make a place for themselves in post-Civil War America.

Set in 1898, Flyin’ West is the story of pioneers of color who took advantage of The Homestead Act, leaving their homes and heading West to build new lives for themselves and their families in the all-black town of Nicodemus, Kansas. Throughout their journey, their sisterhood is challenged in unexpected ways as they face harsh conditions, racism, sexism, and domestic violence. Flyin’ West is a reflection upon how individuals, families, and communities survive together.

The plays we’ve chosen to present do that through many lenses, all with the goal of our audience finding themselves in each compelling story. Accomplished Physicist Sir Claud Amory has constructed a workable formula for one of the most deadly weapons known to man – the atom bomb. Hercule Poirot, with the help of Captain Hastings and Inspector Japp, is called in after the formula is mysteriously stole and Sir Claud is callously murdered.
A superbly crafted whodunit with endless red herrings, subplots of infamous spies and astonishingly prophetic storyline about weapons created through “bombarding the atom”. One of Christies most gripping country house murder mysteries.

COMMUNICATING DOORS by Alan Ayckbourn

This intricare time traveling comic Thriller by the British master of farcical comedy delighted London and New York audiences. A London sex specialist from the future stumbles into a murder plot that sends her, compliments of a unique set of hotel doors, traveling back in time. She and two women who were murdered in 1998 and 1978 race back and forth in time trying to rewrite history and prevent their own violent ends The frantic race begins when Poopay is hired for an evening at the Regal Hotel by an old man who eschews a fling in favor of confessing his role in the demise of his wives. Now a target, Poopay flees into the vestibule and somehow triggers the time machine.

THE DINING ROOM by A.R.Gurney

The play is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembled daily for breakfast and dinner and for any and all special occasions. The action is comprised of a mosaic of interrelated scenes – some funny, some touching, some rueful – which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP. The actors change roles, personalities and ages with virtuoso skill as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, and from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids. Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother’s infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn’t recognize her own sons at Christmas dinner; a daughter, her marriage a shambles, pleads futilely to return home, etc. Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately, into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor and abundant humanity.

2022-2023 Season Announced by Human Race Theatre Company

HRTC_new logoTHE HUMAN RACE BOLDLY MARCHES INTO ITS NEXT 35 YEARS WITH A GROUNDBREAKING 22-23 LOFT SEASON 

The Human Race embraces its mission of “exploring the human condition” in its 36th season by presenting themes of family, national security, dementia, creativity, race, and autism. Honoring its mission by “promoting enlightenment, inclusion and understanding,” the season includes two World Premieres (one play and one musical), a regional premiere, a Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning play, and the return of a favorite.  Outgoing Artistic Director Kevin Moore and incoming Artistic Director Emily N. Wells have created a first-rate season that will entertain and challenge theatregoers in southwest Ohio.

“Sometimes you read a play and you know it is just right for our audience,” said Kevin Moore. “Sometimes a play from your ‘bucket-list’ rises to the top and makes for a perfect addition,” offered Emily Wells. “And other times, a golden opportunity just lands in your lap,” added Moore.  This year, all of the above happened – making it the perfect storm.

The season launches in September with George Brandt’s powerful story of a female drone pilot who tries to balance hunting terrorists by day and being a wife and mother at night in Grounded. This play will mark The Human Race directing debut of its new Artistic Director, Emily N. Wells.  In October, just in time for Halloween, we present the World Premiere comedy/thriller/whodunit by Marcia Kash and Douglas E. Hughes, Deadline.  And December marks the return of that outrageous Seuss ingenue, Cindy Lou Who, as she makes your holidays “merry and bright” in Who’s Holiday! by Matthew Lombardo.

In February 2023, The Human Race and Dayton Live co-present, at the Victoria Theatre, the award-winning, Broadway production of A Soldier’s Play by Charles Fuller in its only Ohio engagement on its national tour.  Returning to the Loft Theatre in April, the company will present the hilarious and unpredictable comedy Barbecue by Robert O’Hara.  The Human Race closes the season in June with the World Premiere musical Indigo by Scott Evan Davis, Jay Kuo and Lorenzo Thione about a non-verbal teen with autism and the family that takes her in. Indigo will be helmed by Broadway director and native Daytonian, Schele Williams.

Grounded tells the story of a hot-shot F16 fighter pilot whose unexpected pregnancy ends her career in the sky. After maternity leave, she is reassigned as a reluctant operator of remotely piloted aircraft in the Middle East.  From an air-conditioned trailer in the desert near Vegas, the Pilot struggles through dreamlike 12-hour shifts hunting terrorists by day and being a wife and mother by night, leading her into a downward spiral. It’s a frightening reflection on war and the controversial wartime use of drones, and demonstrates the psychological effects experienced by a human who has the power of a wrathful deity.

DEADLINE
A World Premiere Comedy Thriller

Playwrights Don and Mara are hired to finish a famous mystery writer’s last play following his mysterious death, shortly before its Broadway opening. The play takes place on a yacht, where an estranged family has been called together for the reading of their mother’s will.  As Don and Mara delve deeper into the writing process, they suddenly find themselves literally sucked into the play, trapped in the very world they are trying to complete, where solving the mystery becomes a matter of life and death.

Deadline is a bit of CLUE, and a bit of KNIVES OUT, and a lot of fun!

WHO’S HOLIDAY!

She’s Back!!!!  That over-indulgent, holiday celebrant “Cindy Lou Who” is back to make your holidays bright!  Who’s Holiday! – last season’s smash-hit comedy by Matthew Lombardo – is back with the hilarious and multi-talented Alex Sunderhaus, offering up some old, some new, some borrowed and some “blue” Christmas to kick your holidays into overdrive.  First-timers and returnees are all welcome!!!!  Cindy Lou does not discriminate.  She’ll offend everyone!

A SOLDIER’S PLAY

A Soldier’s Play, the1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning thriller by Charles Fuller, has rocketed back into the spotlight, thanks to this 2020 Tony Award®-winning Best Revival from Roundabout Theatre Company.

“This is a play that deserves to be staged regularly all over America—though it’s hard to imagine that it will ever be done better than this. It keeps you guessing all the way to the final curtain”  said The Wall Street Journal.

In 1944, on a Louisiana Army base, two shots ring out. A Black sergeant is murdered. And a series of interrogations triggers a gripping barrage of questions about sacrifice, service, and identity in America. Broadway’s Norm Lewis leads a powerhouse cast in the show Variety calls “a knock-your-socks-off-drama,” directed by Tony winner Kenny Leon.

The tour’s stop in Dayton will be its only Ohio appearance.

BARBECUE

April 13 – 30, 2023

In this hilarious and devastating comedy by Robert O‘Hara, the four O’Mallery siblings have planned a barbecue picnic for their youngest sister, Barbara, but it is more of an intervention to confront her outrageous behavior and reckless drug and alcohol use.  We soon learn that the entire family is a mess and each sibling is in need of their own intervention.  Lillie Anne calls James “white trash,” maybe because he brought a Taser along just in case Barbara gets out of hand.  The scene ends – blackout.  When the lights return, so do the four siblings: same park, same situation, same personalities, but they are black instead of white. From that moment the two parallel families alternate, and the barbecue becomes raucous and unpredictable.  Racial politics collide with family stereotypes, survival and America’s fascination with self-destruction as entertainment.

Emma, a non-verbal teen with autism, finds her life upended when the death of her father leaves her in an uncomprehending world. For Emma, the world is a chaotic place until it shifts to the cool blue shades of Indigo, where she is centered and calm in her inner thoughts and dreams. Emma must learn to connect and form bonds with her new family who face daunting challenges of their own. Indigo is a celebration of the human heart and spirit, a moving call for empathy and compassion in a world that often feels devoid of them.

Indigo will be helmed by Broadway Director and native Daytonian, Schele Williams, and is produced by special arrangement with Sing Out, Louise! Productions.

VIOLET | Sept. 23-Oct. 2, 2022

As a girl, Violet was struck by a wayward axe blade when her father was chopping wood, leaving her with a visible scar across her face. With enough money finally saved she’s traveling across the Deep South in 1964 towards a miracle – the healing touch of a TV evangelist who will make her beautiful. Although she may not succeed in having the scar on her face healed, Violet is able to repair those scars that are lying deeper than her skin. Winner of the Drama Critics’ Circle Award and Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical, Violet is a moving musical featuring show-stopping anthems, ranging from American-roots to folk to gospel.

DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE | Oct. 27-Nov. 6, 2022

Dr. Jekyll is a kind, well-respected and intelligent scientist who explores the darker side of science, as he wants to bring out his ‘second’ nature. His experiments transform himself into Mr. Hyde – his evil alter ego who doesn’t repent or accept responsibility for his evil crimes and ways. Jekyll tries to control his alter ego, Hyde, and for a while, Jekyll has the power. The struggle to keep his alternate nature contained leads Dr. Jekyll down a path of death and destruction in this Gothic thriller. This exciting stage adaptation of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson is a narrative about the complexities of science and the duplicity of human nature.

PETER & THE STARCATCHER | Dec. 2-11, 2022

A young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training. They discover a mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin containing starstuff, a powerful, celestial substance. When the ship is taken over by pirates determined to claim the trunk and its treasure, the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure. Tony-winning Peter and the Starcatcher is a coming-of-age adventure story about how a nameless orphan became the strange and celebrated hero that is the Boy Who Would Not Grow Up.

TWELFTH NIGHT | Feb. 16-26, 2023

Shipwrecked on the shores of the strange land, Illyria, Viola believes herself alone in the world and her twin brother drowned. Disguising herself as a boy to work in the court of Illyria’s Count Orsino, Viola discovers her male disguise has proven all too effective: Orsino sends her as a go-between in his persistent love-suit to the unresponsive Countess Olivia. Even as Viola solicits for Olivia’s love on Orsino’s behalf, Viola falls in love with Orsino herself. What ensues is a cross-dressing comedy rife with pain and triumph, humor and madness, transformation and redemption. Twelfth Night or, What You Will, is one of the most structurally perfect comedies ever written and beloved by audiences.

Did you know that Snow White’s Dwarfs are amazing dancers? Come see for yourselves as the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale of Snow White, her evil stepmother, the all-knowing mirror and the handsome (but not-too-brainy) prince, sing and dance their way back into your hearts and imagination.

Princess Aurora, a bold, unconventional young heroine princess defies the age-old tradition of attending ‘Princess School.’ As her eighteenth birthday nears, she encounters an evil witch and a cursed spinning wheel. Aurora is tested when she fails, for the first time, to believe in her authentic self. Then with help from her sweet Prince Phillip, she awakens, ready to rock, and begins a whirlwind musical quest to defeat the witch and to restore order to the Kingdom.

A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING | April 14-23, 2023

Taste and imagination, the two key ingredients for a first-rate revue, abound in this fresh take on the Rodgers & Hammerstein canon, conceived by Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie. Featuring songs from lesser-known works as Allegro, Me and Juliet, and Pipe Dream, to big hits like Oklahoma!, South Pacific, and The Sound of Music, this Tony-nominated musical revue showcases the work of Rodgers & Hammerstein with flair and distinction.

DANCE ’23 | April 28-30, 2023

Featuring a company of our best young dance artists, along with new and innovative works created by faculty, guest artists, and nationally renowned choreographers, Dance ’23 has something for everyone – contemporary dance forms that include modern, jazz, and African/Afro-Fusion.

Finally, after much discussion and consideration, NKU SOTA has made the difficult decision to permanently end its Summer Dinner Theatre programming. During the past few years, the Commonwealth Theatre Company was unable to produce the summer dinner theatre productions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other related challenges. For over 35 years, CTC produced over 80 productions for the NKU community, performing around the country and the world. NKU SOTA extends its heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the wonderful and loyal guests, staff, and performers that have created so many memories over the years. Thank you for the music, laughter, and joy!

Broadway in Cincinnati shows typically run for two weeks at the Aronoff Center.  Performance options are Tuesday through Thursday evenings at 7:30pm, Friday evenings at 8:00pm, Saturdays at 2:00 & 8:00pm and Sundays at 1:00 & 6:30pm. (All times are subject to change.) Originally staged by London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and helmed by the acclaimed director Timothy Sheader (Crazy for You, Into the Woods) and cutting-edge choreographer Drew McOnie (King Kong, Strictly Ballroom), this production won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival garnering unprecedented reviews and accolades. Appealing to both theater audiences and concert music fans, this production pays tribute to the historic 1971 Billboard Album of the Year while creating a modern, theatrical world that is uniquely fresh and inspiring.

With lyrics and music by Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winners Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. From the Tony Award®-winning creators of the Broadway classic Ragtime, this dazzling show transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.

ANASTASIA features a book by celebrated playwright Terrence McNally, a lush new score by Stephen Flaherty (music) and Lynn Ahrens (lyrics) based on original direction by Tony Award- winner Darko Tresnjak with choreography by Peggy Hickey and tour direction by Sarah Hartmann.
