TALLEY’S FOLLY by Lanford Wilson – 1 m, 1 f

The scene is the ornate, deserted Victorian boathouse on the Talley place in Lebanon, Missouri; the time 1944. Matt Friedman, an accountant from St. Louis, has arrived to plead his love to Sally Talley, the susceptible, but uncertain daughter of the family. Bookish, erudite, totally honest and delightfully funny, Matt refuses to accept Sally’s rebuffs and her fears that her family would never approve of their marriage. Charming and indomitable, he gradually overcomes her defenses, telling his innermost secrets to his loved one and, in return, learning hers as well. Gradually he awakens Sally to the possibilities of a life together until, in the final, touching moments of the play, it is clear that they are two kindred spirits who have truly found each other—two “lame ducks” who, in their union, will find a wholeness rare in human relationships.

VANITIES by Jack Heifner – 3 f

A bittersweet comedy that is an astute, snapshot sharp chronicle of the lives of three Texas girls. In 1963, Joanne, Kathy and Mary are aggressively vivacious cheerleaders. Five years later in their college sorority house, they are confronting their futures with nervous jauntiness. In 1974, they reunite briefly in New York. Their lives have diverged their friendship, which once thrived on assumption as well coordinated as sweater sets, is strained and ambiguous. Old time banter rings false. Their attempts at honest conversation only show they can no longer afford to have very much in common.

TIME STANDS STILL by Donald Margulies – 2 m, 2 f

TIME STANDS STILL focuses on Sarah and James, a photojournalist and a foreign correspondent trying to find happiness in a world that seems to have gone crazy. Theirs is a partnership based on telling the toughest stories, and together, making a difference. But when their own story takes a sudden turn, the adventurous couple confronts the prospect of a more conventional life.

BUYER AND CELLAR by Jonathan Tolins
Oct. 13-Nov. 1

Inspired by Barbra Streisand’s My Passion for Design, Buyer & Cellar is part truth, part fiction. The facts: Streisand has a shopping mall in the basement of her Malibu home, featuring a doll shop, an antique clothing store and a sweets shop, complete with a frozen yogurt machine, as detailed in her 2010 book. Playwright Jonathan Tolins takes the wackiness a step further as he imagines a man who is hired to work in the basement of the mall…with Babs as his only customer. The one-man show tells the story of Alex More, a struggling Los Angeles actor who takes a gig working in the basement mall, and develops an unlikely and hilarious friendship with Streisand. – Broadway.com. Starring Cincinnati native Nick Cearley.

CINDERELLA

Romantically-challenged Prince Freddy, having just received his Doctor of Philosophy, has returned to his home kingdom and is being pressured by his all-business father, King Frederick, to quickly choose a bride at the upcoming royal ball. Domineering Brunhilda and greedy daughters, Clarissa and Priscilla, are excited to go to the ball but smart and modern stepdaughter Cinderella would rather stay home and read with her animal friends Aristotle the Crow, Plato the Toad, and Socrates the Spider. Magical Gwendolyn the Well-Wisher appears and urges Cinderella to go to the ball. Stubborn Cinderella finally agrees to go… provided she doesn’t have to wear any stupid glass slippers. At the ball, Cinderella and Prince Freddy dance and fall in love, but the ball erupts into chaos at midnight with every girl losing a glass slipper; Cinderella loses her red sneaker. Prince Freddy tours the countryside with his trusty friend, Gaston to reunite the sneaker with its rightful owner. Brunhilda, Clarissa and Priscilla throw obstacles in the would-be princess’ way, but Cinderella and Freddy find each other by learning that appearances aren’t important and it’s better to trust your heart. –Theatrical Rights. Book by Joseph McDonough, music by Fitz Patton and lyrics by David Kisor.

GROUNDED by George Brant
Jan. 25-Feb. 14

Seamlessly blending the personal and the political, Grounded tells the story of a hot-rod F16 fighter pilot whose unexpected pregnancy ends her career in the sky. Repurposed to flying remote-controlled drones in the Middle East from an air-conditioned trailer near Vegas, the Pilot struggles through surreal twelve-hour shifts far from the battlefield, hunting terrorists by day and being a wife and mother by night. A tour de force play for one actress,Grounded flies from the heights of lyricism to the shallows of workaday existence, targeting our assumptions about war, family, and the power of storytelling. –Oberon Books

TBA
March 22-April 10

VIOLET
Book by Brian Crawley, music by Jeanine Tesori, lyrics by Brian Crawley. Based on The Ugliest Pilgrim by Doris Betts
May 3-22

As a girl, Violet was struck by a wayward axe blade when her father was chopping wood, leaving her with a visible scar across her face. With enough money finally saved she’s traveling across the 1964 Deep South towards a miracle – the healing touch of a TV evangelist that will make her beautiful. Though she may not succeed in having the scar on her face healed, Violet is able to repair those that are lying deeper than her skin; and on the way she meets a young, African-American Soldier whose love for her reaches far past her physical “imperfections”. – Music Theatre International

DIrected by Brant Russell
A collaboration with University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music

The year is 1504. It’s a freakishly cold day in Spain, and the hunchbacked, adopted sister of the dying queen Isabella has to use her formidable intellect to contend with colonial genocide, a forbidden lover, a dying queen, a hellion of an heir, and the mess that is politics in a changing world. An irreverent comedy that turns historical atrocities on their heads in a Tarantino-esque romp, it’s a collaboration that brings CCM drama students to Know Theatre’s stage for a history lesson you won’t get in college.

Paul and Trey recount the strange events of the summer they met, working in ANDY’S HOUSE OF [BLANK]. This small town, mystery-spot, time-travel musical graduates from Serials!, Know’s episodic theatre party, to become a full length show about unrequited love and what it means to change your world.

Directed by Tamara Winters

A long time ago (2006) in a galaxy far, far away (Norwood)….  Dave, Carter and Max have a problem. Their lives never fulfilled the promise that the Star Wars films made, they never had the means to embark on their own galactic adventure. Now they’re 30, and Dave’s still living in his mom’s basement. And Kendra, Carter’s new girlfriend, doesn’t even know what a nerf-herder is. But they have a plan. They will raid Kenner’s secret warehouse and get all the collectibles they can. Their mysterious buyer has promised them more money than they could imagine (and they can imagine quite a bit). Max may have a bad feeling about this, but when the Force is with you, what could possibly go wrong?

Xavier University Theatre Announces 2015-16 Production Season

XUT_logo(CINCINNATI, April 17, 2015) – In its second year as a degree program, Xavier University Theatre announces its largest production season to date. Featuring two Broadway musicals, a world premiere, two classics and an edgy contemporary drama, Xavier Theatre’s 2015-16 season continues to be an exciting place for educational and professional collaboration.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this upcoming slate of shows,” says Xavier Theatre Director Stephen Skiles. “Not only are we bringing to the stage a series of important and diverse stories, but we also will be working with some of the best directors our region has to offer. Next year’s season embodies the professional collaborations and challenging productions that Xavier Theatre seeks to bring to its students and audiences.”

The season opens with the popular and hilarious Broadway musical THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE. Ever wanted to fit in? Ever thought that second place wasn’t good enough or that winning could finally help you figure out who you are? THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE is the story of a group of socially awkward kids finding joy, heartache and a purpose competing at the regional spelling bee. Winner of the Tony and Drama Desk awards for best book, THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience. The 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE will run Oct. 22 to 24, 2015, and is directed by Stephen Skiles.

Xavier Theatre will welcome former Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Producing Artistic Director Ed Stern to campus to direct Kenneth Lonergan’s THIS IS OUR YOUTH from Dec. 3 to 6, 2015. THIS IS OUR YOUTH follows three wayward young people as they navigate 1982 New York, recreating their broken homes in both their dysfunctional friendships and their bungled attempts at finding love. THIS IS OUR YOUTH is a living snapshot of the moment when young people first find themselves on the threshold of adulthood — when they are far more sophisticated than their parents realize and far less effectual than they themselves can possibly imagine. THIS IS OUR YOUTH reminds audiences why The New York Times calls Kenneth Lonergan “arguably the most important American playwright of the last 20 years,” and why Slate calls him “the most potent dramatic voice of his generation.”

From Feb. 17 to 28, 2016, Xavier Theatre will present a series of three plays in repertory, including two classics and a world premiere written by theatre major Tatum Hunter. First is August Strindberg’s MISS JULIE. On Midsummer’s Eve, Miss Julie, a young noblewoman, enters into an illicit affair with her father’s valet, Jean. Worldly and cultured, Jean by turns spurns and encourages Miss Julie’s flirtation, eventually initiating a relationship of disastrous consequences. Written in 1888, Strindberg’s masterful exploration of sex, class and power asks who in the battle of the sexes is really the servant and who the master. MISS JULIE is directed by Torie Wiggins.

Bruce Cromer will direct Harold Pinter’s BETRAYAL. For seven years, Emma and Jerry engage in a passionate love affair, deceiving their spouses, each other and, at times, even themselves. It is ultimately revealed that Emma’s husband, Robert, has known about the affair for years without ever saying a word. Was this his betrayal, or his revenge? As memory reels backward toward the moment the affair started, the lies tangle into a web of deception, and betrayal begets betrayal. One of the 20th century’s most influential dramatists, Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter innovatively explores the complexities of love, guilt and duplicity in this Olivier Award-winning classic.

The world premiere production of EVE, by Tatum Hunter and directed by Bridget Leak, rounds out the repertory offerings. After losing everything in an apartment fire, Marianne and Aaron are forced to get serious about their lives and their relationship. However, their decision to reach out to Aaron’s wealthy parents for help only makes things more complicated as painful memories resurface and threaten their future. While Marianne and Aaron’s mother Eve fight to keep him close, both women struggle to reconcile what they want with what they’ve lost. EVE is a sharp examination of how motherhood shapes the lives of two women and asks what it really means to lose a child.

The 2015-16 season closes April 21 to 24, 2016, with Jonathan Larson’s rock musical RENT. RENT follows a group of bohemian artists as they struggle to maintain their friendships, ideals and way of life in New York’s East Village. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, RENT is an inspiring story about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today that has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates.

Tickets for 2015-16 season productions are available now through the Xavier University Theatre Box Office. Tickets are $17 each for adults and $12 each for students, as well as Xavier faculty and staff. Subscription packages also are available. To purchase tickets, visit www.xavier.edu/theatre or call 513-745-3939.
