Mars Hills Academy to Present OUR TOWN

Audiences will be swept back in time to 1901, as the Mars Hill Academy Players present Thornton Wilder’s OUR TOWN

Zeke Crocker of Maineville, Ellery Powers of Maineville, Lydia Cunningham of Liberty Twp., Marko Mavridis of Lebanon, Kaiya Knodel of Springboro, and Camdon Hutchinson of Cincinnati.

MASON – Milk is delivered, breakfast is on the stove, and the town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire is alive. These everyday moments that shape the human experience will unfold on stage as the Mars Hill Academy Players transport audiences to the turn of the last century in Thornton Wilder’s timeless classic, “Our Town,” Feb. 29-March 2.

In scenes of daily life that capture the poetic beauty of the everyday, this Pulitzer Prize-winning American classic celebrates family, faith and the wonders that happen all around us, if we are just attuned to see them.

Audiences will meet the town gossips, the boys who play baseball, and the choirmaster with a secret sorrow. They’ll witness the unfolding journey of teenagers George Gibbs (played by senior Andrew Leonard of Liberty Twp.) and Emily Webb (played by senior Lydia Cunningham of Liberty Twp.), as they navigate the realms of friendship, love, marriage, and beyond. The drama culminates in Emily’s third act revelation that humans fail to “realize life while they live it…every, every minute.”

Directed by the Headmaster Mike McKenna, the cast brings a fresh and heartfelt perspective to the enduring themes of the play.

“This production is a nostalgic journey that invites audiences to immerse themselves in the simplicity and richness of life in Grover’s Corners. ‘Our Town’ not only captures the essence of a bygone era but also explores the universal aspects of love, gratitude, and the human experience,” he explained.

McKenna said one unique aspect of directing Wilder’s classic is stripping the play of artifice with minimal scenery or props.

“The show contains fewer props and visuals, allowing the audience to focus on the characters and the strong emotions,” he said.

“Our Town” is a show for all ages. McKenna explained, “The themes of ‘Our Town’ are timeless and resonate with audiences of every generation. It invites us to reflect on the simple yet profound aspects of life that connect us all.”

Playhouse Summer Camps & Performance Academies Now on Sale

PIP_logo2024 program features more performance opportunities and multiple locations

CINCINNATI — Enrollment is now open for Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s summer camps, eight weeks of theatrical fun and creativity this summer, including more performance options than previous years. Students can choose from new programs and beloved camper favorites, with themes running from “Mean Girls JR.” to “Encanto” to zombies to urban legends.

Camps will be held at the Playhouse in Mt. Adams, the Mason Community Center and at a location near Erlanger, KY (to be announced soon). Camps are open to incoming 1st- through 12th-graders, including camps designed specifically for older campers. Programs also include an accessibility Launch Pad program for children with developmental disabilities, sensory challenges and neurodivergences (details below). No experience or audition is required for any camp.

“Our mission is to encourage creativity through awesome stories in an inclusive, artistic environment,” said Playhouse Education Director Ariana Moses. “We invite students to unleash their imagination, get moving, make new connections and become part of a community—all while having a blast!”

Through the course of each session, campers work together to tell stories while learning both theatre skills and life skills. In addition to studying musical theatre, stage combat, acting, writing and more, campers will discover more about their individuality as they make connections with audiences, with each other and with themselves.

One-Week Camps teach the fundamentals of creating theatre. Each week has a different theme that focuses on special skills — like stage combat or singing and dancing or writing — in addition to rehearsal and performance. Campers will share what they have learned with family and friends at the end of the week in an informal Shareformance. Programs this year include:

  • Clash of the Movie Monsters
  • ¡Hola Casita! Songs from Disney’s Encanto
  • The Kraken, Mothman and Ogopogo: Writing Urban Legends

Two-week Performance Academies offer the chance to experience the production of a play from start to finish. These camps have become popular for young theatre enthusiasts who enjoy working as an ensemble to rehearse and perform a play — but any student who is interested in learning theatre is welcome to register. Each session concludes with a performance for family and friends, complete with sets, props and costumes. Performance Academies include:

  • Annie KIDS
  • Disney’s Finding Nemo KIDS
  • Mean Girls JR.
  • She Kills Monsters: Young Adventurers Edition

New programming this summer includes one-week Performance Showcases and Intensives that focus more deeply on honing performance and storytelling techniques. Thematic content varies from week to week, but each camp explores these techniques through the lens of a specific story, musical or performance style. Campers will have extended rehearsal time in the lead-up to a showcase at the end of the week where they’ll share selections of what they have focused on with family and friends.

Programs include:

  • Musical Theatre Intensive: Spotlight on Disney’s Descendants: The Musical
  • It’s Showtime! Beetlejuice the Musical Showcase
  • Little Monsters Pop Music Explosion Showcase
  • Playwriting Inside the Upside Down Showcase
  • How to Make it Through a Zombie Apocalypse: Combat Showcase

“Theatre can be created by any person at any age, and our camp staff loves helping our campers play a part in that process during summer programs,” says Moses. “We always see students gain both confidence and performance skills. By the end of the summer, they’ve made new friends and are brimming with the joy that is live performance. It’s a pretty magical time.”

The Launch Pad Accessibility Program continues this summer, offering opportunities for campers who have developmental disabilities, neurodivergences and sensory challenges to participate in camps and have their unique needs met. Camp staff are trained to meet specific needs and accommodations, and a family coordinator works with parents and caregivers to ensure a comfortable experience for their camper.

Enrollment is now open with early bird pricing until Feb. 29. Financial scholarships are available for campers who demonstrate need, and Before Care and After Care options are available at all locations.

Xavier University Theatre Presents XAVIER THEATRE STUDENT SHOWCASE, Feb. 9-18

(CINCINNATI, January 16, 2023) – Xavier University Theatre continues the 2023-24 season with its innovative Xavier Theatre Student Showcase. The repertory series will run February 9 through 17 and feature productions of The Moors by Jen Silverman and Non-Player Character by Walt McGough, as well as a student-developed Choreographers’ Workshop.

XUT_The Moors

Max Winski as the Masitff, Sarah Malarney as Agatha & Mattie Ceiplak as Huldey in THE MOORS.

The Moors tells the story of two sisters, their maid, and their dog who live out their lives on the bleak English moors, dreaming of love and power. The arrival of a hapless governess and a moor-hen set off a strange and dangerous course of events. It is a dark comedy about love, desperation, and visibility.

XUT_NPC

Erin Bonham as Katja in NON-PLAYER CHARACTER

Non-Player Character explores more current events, following aspiring video game designer Katja and her longtime friend Trent, who are an unstoppable team against animated monsters in the virtual underworlds of SpearLight, an online role-playing game. Comic and poignant, it is a timely, boldly theatrical exploration of gender bias in the digital entertainment industries. The play is roughly inspired by true events.

XUT_Choreographers Workshop

Choreographers Abigail Dirr, Tierra London Rush, Sienna Glaze, Alexis Pinto & Anthony Frederickson.

The Choreographers’ Workshop showcases physicality and movement as one of the greatest indicators of emotion that play a key role in storytelling. Through a range of styles including hip hop, contemporary, theatre jazz, and more, audiences will experience ten different stories told completely through movement.

When asked about the Student Showcase, senior Tessa D’Errico, who directs The Moors, says, “I’m excited to work with everyone because I know how passionate we all are about bringing these shows to life. It’s going to be a whirlwind two weekends, but these opportunities are what Xavier Theatre is all about. It brings out the best in us students and is so rewarding!” This sentiment was echoed by many, including the fellow student director, senior Anna Verderber.

Verderber, who directs Non-Player Character, says, “I adore the Student Showcase, because it showcases the incredible talent of the program in every single role. From sound design to directing to acting, this is the only time where EVERYTHING is done by the students. And that’s beautiful. At the end of the day, this is what we all want to do with our lives. This is what we will be doing when we graduate. How amazing we get an opportunity to start practicing that now.”

Senior Sienna Glaze, who is a choreographer, remarked on the importance of learning the skill of leadership. She says, “As a choreographer, I am grateful to be trusted to run a rehearsal room by myself. It has helped me grow in my own leadership and confidence which, I feel, is vital to entering the professional world outside of college.”

The showcase is not only seen as vital to the students most involved. First-year Bri Willingham, who is in the Choreographers’ Workshop, says, “I love that Xavier Theatre gives students the ability to showcase their talent and artistry, it is one of the factors that led me to commit to Xavier University.
