Know Theatre of Cincinnati Presents The AFGHAN WOMEN’S WRITING PROJECT

Adapted by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek

Know Theatre is pleased to announce our next mainstage production, the AFGHAN WOMEN’S WRITING PROJECT (AWWP). Know Theatre commissioned playwrights Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek to curate a performance piece from the writings available on the project website (www.awwproject.org). Ms. Martin & Ms. Hynek will also co-direct the piece. The staged reading will show March 8 – March 11, 2012. Following the Friday, March 9 performance, Executive Director Elizabeth Lehr of The AFGHAN WOMEN’S WRITING PROJECT will lead a post-show discussion.

AWWP’s mission is to empower Afghan women to share their voices with the world. Despite deteriorating security, women determined to tell their own stories gather online and in “writing huts” in undisclosed locations in Kabul and Herat to receive mentoring from American women authors and professors, and to participate in writing workshops and reading salons. AWWP’s online magazine is the vehicle through which their stories are shared. The project also aims to promote greater economic independence for these women by strengthening their self-confidence, computer literacy and writing skills, and to encourage the inclusion of women’s voices in Afghanistan’s national dialogue. The project reaches out to talented and generous women author/teachers here in the United States and engages them, on a volunteer, rotating basis, to teach Afghan women online from Afghanistan. The goal of the project is to encourage the women to develop their voices and share their stories, something that was not permitted during the years when Afghanistan was Taliban-held.

“When I stumbled upon a review of the first staged performance of these pieces I was intrigued by the concept,” says Producing Artistic Director, Eric Vosmeier. “Once I spent some time on the site, I knew I wanted our audiences to hear these women. The stories are touching and horrifying, funny and thoughtful. They are inspiring in so many ways. And when you realize that some of the writers put their lives in danger just to write, let alone to find a way to upload their stories to the site, you know that these stories deserve to be heard by as many people as possible.”

In 2010, the Afghan Women’s Writing Project held two highly successful readings of poems and stories by these Afghan women writers: the first in Los Angeles on March 8th and the second in Washington, D.C., on May 24th.

Know Theatre is proud to partner with Women Writing for a Change and Women Helping Women for this production and will be scheduling special post-show discussions with these groups after select performances. More information coming soon.

Additional Information
The AFGHAN WOMEN’S WRITING PROJECT began as an idea during novelist Masha Hamilton’s last trip to Afghanistan in November 2008. Masha first visited the country in 2004, and was awed and inspired by the resolute courage of the women she met. When she returned, she saw doors were closing and life was again becoming more difficult, especially for women. She began to fear we could lose access to the voices of Afghan women if we didn’t act soon. The Afghan Women’s Writing Project is aimed at allowing Afghan women to have a direct voice in the world, not filtered through male relatives or members of the media. Many of these Afghan women have to make extreme efforts to gain computer access in order to secretly submit their writings, in English, to the project.

Elisabeth Lehr, Acting Executive Director of AFGHAN WOMEN’S WRITING PROJECT, is a college history instructor and writer. She brings to the AWWP extensive management experience in higher education, the creative arts, and non-profit organization, along with in-depth knowledge and respect of Afghan history and culture, and a passion for women’s words. Elisabeth began her association with AWWP as Workshop Director in February 2010, and completely overhauled and updated the workshop portal. In August 2011 she moved to the position of Associate Director and became Acting Executive Director in December 2011.

David A. Centers Earns LCT Award for Children’s Theatre Production, Disney’s MY SON PINOCCHIO, JR.

(CINCINNATI, FEB. 14, 2012) – David A. Centers, scenic designer for The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati, has been recognized with a League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) Award for the company’s production of Disney’s My Son Pinocchio Jr.

Centers’ set design for Pinocchio journeys all the way from Geppetto’s Toy Shop to inside the belly of a whale as Pinocchio undergoes a magical transformation from a wooden puppet to a real boy. According to one panelist, “Centers presents a beautifully turned out set with enough heft and scale to fill the large stage at the Taft Theatre. Detailed and captivating, with the flying elements for young audiences, it supports the story with professional polish.”

Centers, a graduate of Cincinnati’s School for Creative and Performing Arts with degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and New York University, designs most of the productions for The Children’s Theatre. He also works throughout the region, including at Cincinnati Opera and Dayton’s Human Race Theatre Company. His designs have been seen at opera, theatre and ballet companies nationally, as well as internationally with La Traviata at the Sakai Opera Company in Osaka, Japan.

Grammy Award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell) adds original songs to the classic Pinocchio film score that includes “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “I’ve Got No Strings.” Performances for Disney’s My Son Pinocchio Jr. continue through Feb. 18. CAA & Kenton County School District Chosen to Participate in Kennedy Center’s Partners in Education Program

The addition of 12 Partnership Teams
from across the nation recently announced

Birmingham, AL; Orlando, FL; Rockford, IL; Notre Dame, IN;
Cleveland, MS; Red Bank, NJ; Santa Fe, NM; Reno, NV; Cincinnati, OH;
Charleston, SC; Appleton, WI; Milwaukee, WI

Teams will be inducted at the Partners in Education Institute
April 25-28, 2012 at the Kennedy Center

In April 2012, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will host the 13th Partners in Education Institute. The four-day intensive is designed for arts organizations and school districts interested in partnering together to initiate or expand professional development programs for teachers. The Kennedy Center selected 12 teams of arts organizations and school systems from across the nation – including the Cincinnati Arts Association and Kenton County School District – to participate in the Partners in Education Institute, April 25-28, 2012. The Institute promotes partnerships in communities across the nation between arts organizations and local schools, focusing on the development of education programs for teachers. The information learned at the Institute has proven invaluable to past participants who leave the Kennedy Center with more confidence in their ability to develop their own professional development programs for teachers.

While at the Kennedy Center, each team develops a plan specific to their community for the partners to establish or expand arts-based professional development programs for teachers. Teams receive a detailed planning guide, attend performances, and meet with national education leaders and guest artists while at the Kennedy Center. The new teams will join the 100 teams from 45 states and the District of Columbia already participating in the Partners in Education program, now in its 22nd year. At the Institute, participants will examine the variety of educational offerings for teachers developed and refined at the Kennedy Center since 1976. The newly-selected teams met the criteria for selection by effectively demonstrating the potential for the arts organization and school system to initiate or expand programs for teachers and the stated commitment by both partners to collaborate on developing programs.

“CAA is delighted to broaden and expand what is already a strong relationship with Kenton County Schools,” said Steve Finn, Director of Education and Community Relations, Cincinnati Arts Association. “We are truly excited to attend the Partners in Education institute where both organizations will acquire additional training and skills in support of not only our collaborative relationship, but also the children of the Tri-state. We look forward to working with Kenton County Schools over the next few years to develop exciting new professional development programs for their teachers. We are also thrilled that CAA will have access to a variety of Kennedy Center programming as part of the Partners in Education program.”

“We are beyond thrilled and honored to be collaborating with CAA in the Partners in Education Institute at the Kennedy Center!” said Debbie Brown, Gifted & Talented Coordinator, Kenton County Schools. “For many years, we have experienced countless CAA programs, and have appreciated the quality of not only the performances, but also the exceptional details in the study guides/teacher resources. This new commitment in partnership is a clear investment in the support of our teachers to provide professional development that will in turn foster quality resources and programs for our students. We are so grateful that CAA recognizes the value in supporting our teachers and students through the arts. We look forward to the endless possibilities that may arise from this new connection with the Kennedy Center!”

The Kennedy Center’s workshops for Washington, D.C.-area teachers serve as a focus for the Partners in Education Institute. Since its establishment in 1972, the Kennedy Center’s Education Department believes the inclusion of the performing arts in a broad-based curriculum improves the quality of a child’s educational experience. The Kennedy Center’s Education Department is committed to its leadership role in promoting higher standards of national performing arts education programs and policy. For more information about the participating teams and the Partners in Education program, visit http://www.kennedy-center.org/education/partners.

Clifton Players’ DISGRUNTLED EMPLOYEES Earns Two LCT Awards for Acting

Buz Davis as Gus, Rachael Christianson as Valentine, Micheal Bath as Lubbock, Adam Marzheuser as Alex & Reggie Willis as Mr. Barcroft.

(CINCINNATI, FEB. 14, 2012) – Cast members Reggie Willis and Buz Davis picked up League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) Awards for their performances in the Clifton Players production of disgruntled employees. A regional premiere by Cincinnati actor/playwright Kevin Crowley, disgruntled employees is a dark comedy set among the mail sorters in a Tornado Alley branch of the United States Post Office.

Both Willis and Davis earned their awards in the category of featured actor in a play. LCT panelists described their performances as “highly individualized portraits, textured, consistent and very funny.”

Willis portrays Mr. Barcroft, the office’s nutty supervisor. “Willis plays damaged authority figures with ease, and he is on his game,” said one panelist. “I liked all his scenes, as he is just fun to watch.”

As Gus, the long-time bureaucrat who’s finally been pushed to the dark side, Davis gives a “strong performance” described as “delightful to watch.” According to one panelist, “He’s intense, an any-second-now-I-will-go-off banana peel personality — violent, philosophical, funny.”

The play was workshopped under Artistic Director Lloyd Richards at the National Playwrights Conference, where it received the Charles MacArthur Fellowship Award for comedy. It has subsequently been performed in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Produced at the Clifton Performance Theatre, disgruntled employees continues through Feb. 26. Details are available at http://cliftonperformancetheatre.com.

The League of Cincinnati Theatres was founded in 1999 to strengthen, nurture and promote Cincinnati’s theatre community. LCT provides its member companies and individual members with education, resources and services to enhance the quality and exposure of the theatre community in Cincinnati and increase community awareness, attendance and involvement. More information about the League can be found at www.leagueofcincytheatres.info.
