(CINCINNATI) — The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park’s joyous, time-honored celebration of the true spirit of the holidays achieves the quarter-century mark this season as U.S. Bank presents Charles Dickens’ iconic story A CHRISTMAS CAROL. The beloved tale, enjoyed each season by multiple generations of Cincinnatians, will be performed for its 25th year in the Playhouse’s Robert S. Marx Theatre from Nov. 25 through Dec. 30.

Dickens, considered to be one of the greatest writers of all time, wrote the instantly successful A CHRISTMAS CAROL in 1843. His most popular work among a prolific output of classics, A CHRISTMAS CAROL is credited for revitalizing the celebration of Christmas as we know it today. So renowned is the story in popular culture that “Scrooge” has become a synonym for a mean, tight-fisted person. A CHRISTMAS CAROL has also inspired countless television, film and stage adaptations, from classic interpretations to contemporary and even cartoon versions.

The Playhouse’s version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, adapted by Howard Dallin, brings Dickens’ narrative to vivid life with spectacular effects that illuminate Ebenezer Scrooge’s time-traversing pilgrimage with the spirits one magical Christmas Eve. From his kind-hearted sister Fan and first love Belle to his generous employer Fezziwig and humble clerk Bob Cratchit, Scrooge is repeatedly shown the saving grace of love and concern for humanity. The heartwarming message of A CHRISTMAS CAROL helps to make it one of the Playhouse’s most popular productions each season and a perfect way to introduce children to the joys of theatre.

The cast of the 25th anniversary production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL features a mix of new and familiar actors. Bruce Cromer, the longest-tenured of the four actors who have filled Ebenezer Scrooge’s miserly shoes, returns to the role for the 11th time this season. (Cromer previously portrayed long-suffering clerk Bob Cratchit for eight years.) Also returning are Avery Clark as Young and Mature Scrooge/Ghost of Christmas Future, Craig Wesley Divino as Fred, Joy Farmer-Clary as Belle/Catherine Margaret, Annie Fitzpatrick as Mrs. Fezziwig/Patience, Ryan Wesley Gilreath as Bob Cratchit/Schoolmaster Oxlip, Kelly Mengelkoch as Mrs. Cratchit/Laundress, Gregory Procaccino as Jacob Marley/Old Joe, Douglas Rees as Mr. Fezziwig/Ghost of Christmas Present, Nick Rose as Mr. Cupp/Percy/Rich Man at Fezziwig’s and Stephen Skiles as Mr. Sosser/Topper/Man with Shoe Shine/Guest at Fezziwig’s. New to A CHRISTMAS CAROL this season is Cincinnati native Kathleen Wise, who is making her Playhouse debut as Ghost of Christmas Past/Mrs. Peake.

Members of the Playhouse’s Bruce E. Coyle Acting Intern Company — Law Dunford, Kyle Powell, Serena Ryen, Robert Carlton Stimmel, Erin Ward, Renika Williams and Lilian Wouters — will play carolers, party guests and others.

Nine Tristate children also appear in A CHRISTMAS CAROL; this season, six new actors join the three veteran junior cast members. Returning are Nathan E. Goodlett as George/Charles/Apprentice at Fezziwig’s, Livvy Stubenrauch as Fan/Guest at Fezziwig’s and Ethan Verderber as Peter Cratchit/Gregory/Apprentice at Fezziwig’s. New to the production this year are Ella Gallagan as Belinda Cratchit/Guest at Fezziwig’s, Ari Elizabeth Johnson as Want/Guest at Fezziwig’s, Aidan McCracken as Ignorance/Matthew/Rich Son at Fezziwig’s, Ashley Taylor as Martha Cratchit/Guest at Fezziwig’s, Austin Vaughan as Boy Scrooge/Guest at Fezziwig’s/Bootblack and Henry Charles Weghorst as Tiny Tim.

“It is a recurring joy to bring Charles Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL to life every holiday season,” says Michael Evan Haney, who is directing the production for the 23rd time. (Haney has been associated with A CHRISTMAS CAROL since 1991, its first year. He played the first Bob Cratchit for two seasons.) “I love watching the children filing into the Playhouse dressed in their holiday finery to experience this play for the very first time. I feel proud that this production has become a tradition for so many Cincinnati families.”

In addition to Haney, the creative team for A CHRISTMAS CAROL includes James Leonard Joy (set designer), David Murin (costume designer), Kirk Bookman (lighting designer), David B. Smith (sound designer/composer), Steve O’Shea (lighting contractor), Cindy Witherspoon (costume coordinator), Rebecca N. Childs (music director) and Dee Anne Bryll (choreographer). The stage manager is Andrea L. Shell, and second stage managers are Brooke Redler and Jenifer Morrow.

The production is presented by U.S. Bank. The design sponsor is American Modern Insurance Group. Artist sponsor/Ebenezer Scrooge is AAA and Provident Travel, and artist sponsor/Tiny Tim is Skidmore Sales and Distributing. Additional support is provided by The Stona Fitch Family.

2016-2017 Season Announced by The Drama Workshop

TDW_VERTThe Drama Workshop is thrilled to announce its 2016-2017 season. Featuring a selection of classic comedies, musicals, and dramatic fare, theater-goers will be sure to enjoy themselves at TDW’s intimate, 96-seat performance venue.

Leading off the season in August, 2016, will be Michael Frayn’s farcical classic, NOISES OFF. Frayn takes the ‘play-within-a-play’ concept, and turns it on its ear, as we follow the hapless efforts of a British touring company trying to stage the comedy, “Nothing’s On”.  With a lead actress who can’t remember her lines, a dim-witted leading man, a gorgeous ingénue who can’t keep up with the insanity around her, and a director who’s trying to keep calm and carry on, nothing is going right. Widely known for featuring both sides of the set, which changes between acts, this audience favorite will be directed by Dennis Murphy and will run August 12 through August 28, 2016.

Following next will be the dramatic comedy, THE LION IN WINTER, by James Goldman.  At Christmas in 1183, an aging and conniving King Henry II plans a reunion where he hopes to name his successor. He summons his scheming but imprisoned wife, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine; his mistress, Princess Alais, whom he wishes to marry; his three sons, all of whom desire the throne; and the young but crafty King Philip of France. With the fate of Henry’s empire at stake, everybody engages in their own brand of deception and treachery to stake their claim. TDW welcomes Francis Boyle to their stage to direct this Tony-award winning play, running from October 7 through October 23, 2016.

In December, the cast of TDW’s award-winning 2013 production of NUNSENSE will return to perform a holiday variety show in NUNCRACKERS, by Dan Goggin. NUNCRACKERS is the first TV special taped in the Cable Access Studio built by Reverend Mother in the convent basement.  Featuring all new songs including Twelve Days Prior to Christmas, Santa Ain’t Comin’ to Our House, We Three Kings of Orient Are Us and It’s Better to Give than to Receive, this show is filled with typical NUNSENSE humor, some of your favorite carols, and a “Secret Santa” audience participation. We’re certain this NUNSENSE Christmas Show will make you laugh, and maybe tug at your heartstrings. It’s the perfect way to insure that your holiday season is merry and bright! NUNCRACKERS will be directed by Lizanne Ingram, and runs December 2 through December 18, 2016.

The first show of 2017 will be the Neil Simon classic comedy THE ODD COUPLE. Oscar Madison has the perfect life – nobody tells him what to do, whether it’s to clean his house or empty his refrigerator of months-old leftovers. But when his obsessively neat friend Felix Unger shows up on his doorstep, having been thrown out of his apartment by his wife, Oscar takes him in – with predictable results. Can two friends live together without driving each other crazy? We all know and love the classic movie and television series. The Drama Workshop’s version of this memorable classic will be directed by Ray Persing, and runs from February 24 through March 12, 2017.

TDW’s 2016-2017 season will close with the heartfelt tribute, ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE. Written by Ted Swindley, ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE has enjoyed great success all over the United States, including a successful run off-Broadway. More than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963, the show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in l961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The musical play, complete with down home country humor and even some audience participation, includes many of Patsy’ unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight…27 songs in all.  The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger, which were consistently signed “Love ALWAYS… Patsy Cline.” Directed by Robert Weidle, ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE runs from April 28 through May 14, 2017.

Tickets for TDW’s 2016-2017 season will be available beginning in February 2016.

Knows 18th Season Continues with a Unique Original Musical, ANDY’S HOUSE OF [BLANK]

KNOW’S 18TH SEASON CONTINUES
WITH A UNIQUE ORIGINAL MUSICAL
ANDY’S HOUSE OF [BLANK] by Paul Strickland and Trey Tatum directed by Bridget Leak

A new musical about small towns, summer jobs, and second chances that happen  over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

KTC_Andys House of Blank logoAndy always was an unusual man, running a store that was part Emporium of Oddities and part Museum of Unmailed Love Letters. When Sadie, his old school crush, comes back to town for her father’s funeral, she shows up at the store with a mysterious machine. And then she shows up over and over and over again. In this brand new, small town, mystery spot musical, originally developed as part of Know Theatre’s Serials program, Paul and Trey recount the strange events of the summer they met as teenagers working at Andy’s House of [blank]. As they piece together their hazy memories, the two uncover a story of unrequited love and what it means to change your world.

Know Theatre continues its 18th season (“We’re Adults Now!”) by reliving summer jobs of the past in this developmental production of the brand new, fulllength version of Andy’s House of [blank], which had previously been mounted in five 15minute installments at Know’s biannual, episodic theatre party, Serials, in the winter of 2015.

With this production, Know reinforces its commitment to supporting local artists in the development of new works. It also marks the second time a show has graduated from Serials to further life on Know’s stages. Says Artistic Director Andrew Hungerford,

“One of the many things that I love about Serials is that it provides a fantastic incubator to fast track new works from the page to the stage. When we saw Andy’s House unfold during Serials: Thunderdome last winter, we knew that it was something special. It’s incredibly gratifying to be able to provide a playground for artists like the team behind Andy’s House, and to work with them to develop the show beyond an episodic experiment into a fully realized production.”

Regarding their collaboration and the inspiration for the show, cocreators Paul Strickland and Trey Tatum explain,

TREY: I met Paul during the 2014 Cincy Fringe [and] we learned that we grew up 45 minutes apart from each other. I was terrified about [Serials! 2] Thunderdome, so I reached out to Paul and asked if he wanted to write a musical with me.

PAUL: I knew I wanted to be involved in Serials but had NO ideas that I thought would be sustainable in that format. I began the process [with Trey] not really knowing how well I’d collaborate (I’ve often worked solely on my own and my exwife has assured me I don’t work well with others) but, despite the growing pains and difficulties that come with ANY good collaboration, this was the most fun I’ve ever had making a script.

TREY: At our first meeting, Paul was clear that he wanted the musical to be set in a shop of curiosities.

PAUL: I had visited the Abita Mystery House just outside of New Orleans, an oddities shop and roadside attraction and the owner is remarkably but somehow-still-not-entirely self-aware.  [Trey] and I talked for more than an hour about outsider art and oddity shops all over the country. It occurred to me that I’ve never heard of a musical that really capitalized on what is so lovely about roadside attractions, one of my great loves and passions in life. That’s where the show began for me.

TREY: Writing with Paul is almost easier than writing on my own. The pile of good ideas is bigger, my weak points just happen to be Paul’s strong points. Thematically, ideas about obsession and the lengths we go to be desirable to others came out slowly over time. We had outlined episodes 13 and were stuck (this was before episode one even went up) and we went on a long walk thru Covington and refused to go back home until we figured out the ending. That was when we really settled on obsessions as a guiding force in the story.

About the fun they’ve had throughout the process and the opportunity to develop the show further, Director Bridget Leak remarks,

“Trey and I have been using the hashtag #bestfriendsclub because that is how that project was developed, in our kitchen over dinner and drinks. The Serials process was about cramming as many rehearsals as we could into each week, but we always made sure that it was fun (and booze was there). This fully realized production is an opportunity to really play with the theatricality of the environment a curiosity shop with dead animals mounted on the walls and to really take the time and care to develop the love story between Andy and Sadie, AND to keep it fun if this process doesn’t feel like us hanging out in the kitchen playing (with booze), there’s no point in doing it!”

ANDY’S HOUSE OF [BLANK] will feature the original cast from its run at Serials! 2: Thunderdome. Cocreators Paul Strickland and Trey Tatum revive their semiautobiographical roles of Paul and Trey, who revisit the experiences they had one summer working at Andy’s House and provide the instrumental backing for all songs. Reprising his role as the heartbroken shop owner, Andy, is Christopher Michael Richardson, a Member of the Bruce E. Coyle Acting Intern Company at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park during the 2014/2015 Season. Rounding out the cast is Erika Kate MacDonald as Sadie, the former love interest of Andy’s who appears with a strange machine and then keeps showing up again and againfor the first time.

Opening October 30th, Andy’s House of [blank] will completely transform Know Theatre’s Underground space into the titular emporium and museum for this oneofakind MainStage presentation…that’s actually on our SecondStage. It’s just the kind of unique and creative programming you’ve come to expect from Your Theatrical Playground.

All-City Boychoir Festival comes to Aronoff Center

All-City Boychoir Festival comes to Aronoff Center
with free singing opportunity for more than 300 boys

MISC_Cincinnati Boychoir logSummary: The All-City Boychoir Festival is a day-long music-making experience for any boy from the 1st through 12th grades. In partnership with the Cincinnati Arts Association, the festival will be offered free of charge to any boy who wishes to participate, and held in the Procter & Gamble Hall at the Aronoff Center.

  • Who: any boy from 1st through 12th grade
  • When: Saturday, November 7, 1:00 pm – 6:00 PM
  • Where Aronoff Center for the Arts – Procter & Gamble Hall
  • How Much: Free of charge to all
  • Presented by: The Cincinnati Boychoir

In 2012, the Cincinnati Boychoir began to offer a one-day singing opportunity to any boy from the city who wished to participate. The Cincinnati Boychoir was founded as a part of the Cincinnati Public Schools, and the All-City Boychoir Festival was intended, specifically, as a way of providing a boychoir experience for boys on a short-term basis. The event is an exciting and fun way to experience music for boys from all backgrounds.

In 2013 and 2014, the Festival was held at Memorial Hall, but the facility became too small to hold the rapidly growing event.

Now the newest resident company at the Aronoff Center, the Cincinnati Boychoir has partnered with the Cincinnati Arts Association to be able to offer the Festival not just free of charge, but in the Aronoff Center’s spectacular Procter & Gamble Hall. Because of this partnership, the Boychoir is now able to invite to the Festival boys through grade 12. This year there will be an added emphasis on training for boys whose voices are changed or changing.

Concurrent with the Festival for the boys and young men will be a continuing education session for school teachers; teachers can earn .3 CEUs for their participation.

No advance preparation is required of the boys. Each boy will receive a free t-shirt and Graeter’s cookies during the workshop. The final concert, at 5:00 pm, is free and open to the public. The concert will feature music from around the world, and Baoku Moses on drums. Graeter’s Ice Cream is an in-kind sponsor of the event.

The Cincinnati Boychoir is one of the premiere professional boychoirs in the United States. Located in the urban arts core of Cincinnati at the Aronoff Center for the Arts, the Boychoir reaches approximately 200 young men each year from more than 90 schools in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Since 1965, the Cincinnati Boychoir has been dedicated to the musical, intellectual, and emotional development of these young men and has served as one of the foremost music education and performance organizations in the region; boys attend weekly rehearsals, retreats, music theory classes, and the annual SongFest Summer Music Camp for Boys at Xavier University. Each year, the Cincinnati Boychoir presents approximately thirty annual performances in the Greater Cincinnati region, and has performed concerts and completed residencies both at home and abroad; most recently, the Boychoir undertook three three-day residencies with boychoirs in England (June 2013), a week-long residency at the Hotchkiss School in northwest Connecticut (June 2014), and a two-week tour of Australia in 2015.
