americUS fuses theatre, jazz, poetry and hip hop to weave together experiences of modern life

CINCINNATI – The award-winning, multi-cultural performance ensemble Universes will bring its groundbreaking style of live storytelling to Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park with the world premiere of americUS. With support from The Rosenthal Family Foundation, this infusion of slam poetry, music, dance and theatre runs from Feb. 1 through March 8, with opening night on Feb. 6 at the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre.

The Universes ensemble originated in The Bronx in 1995, inspired by the urban music and poetry scene that took over New York City in the ‘90s. Having performed off-Broadway, internationally and at major stages across the country, Universes has been praised by critics for their singular and unforgettable performance style. The production of americUS, which was commissioned by the Playhouse, brings Universes to Cincinnati for the first time.

“When I first saw Universes perform, I was simply blown away by their performance style, the variety of what they do, and the depth of feeling and thought that they can engender within the audience,” says Blake Robison, artistic director. “This show promises to be unlike anything seen before on Playhouse stages.”

An unfiltered, honest portrait of contemporary America, americUS is directed by Joan Herrington, who has worked with Universes in past productions, and will feature an ensemble cast including Universes’ co-founders Steven Sapp and Mildred Ruiz-Sapp as well as Gamal Chasten and Asia Mark.

americUS is an exploration of what it means to be in America at this time — what our joys are, what our challenges are and how we find our way in the midst of some very crazy days,” says Herrington. “Everything Universes does has contemporary relevance and this piece is no different.”

Sapp and Ruiz-Sapp are excited to engage with the community and hope that audiences take something away and feel empowered to open a dialogue about the issues presented in the show.

“It’s exciting because it’s a new audience, it’s new grounds to walk through, new people to meet and interact with,” says Ruiz-Sapp. “We’re going to walk into it like we’ve been there before, like it’s family, like these are the people that we’re living with and the people that are us. No differences, no barriers, no boundaries, no borders.”

SERIALS!, Know Theatre’s iconic Monday night theatre party, returns for its triumphant 10th iteration this winter. Taking over our Underground performance space will be an eclectic group of familiar friends and new faces with entirely new stories to tell. Cincinnati Artist’s Theatre Teams with Clifton Players to Present Inaugural Production

IMG_3643The Clifton Players have officially joined forces with Cincinnati Artist’s Theatre, a newly formed collective of Cincinnati-based theatre artists led by CCM Alumni Landon Hawkins, Gabriella DiVencenzo, and Ella Eggold.

In January, CAT will present three performances of TOO MUCH LIGHT MAKES THE BABY GO BLIND (30 Plays in 60 minutes).

Having opened in 1988 and still playing today as the longest-running show in Chicago history, Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind is an ensemble experiment in presenting “30 Plays in 60 Minutes.” Each two-minute play is performed in random order with an interactive audience. An onstage 60-minute timer keeps everyone honest.

This absurd piece written by Greg Allen and The Neo-Futurists is the first play performed by Cincinnati Artist’s Theatre (CAT). The members of CAT have been working in the Cincinnati artistic community for years, but this will be their first performance as a collective. They’ve teamed with some of the founding members of the Clifton Players to bring you a season of incredible work at The Liberty Exhibition Hall in Northside. Let the madness begin!

The cast includes: Brianna Bernard, Gabriella DiVencenzo, Landon Hawkins, Graham Lutes & Carter Lacava.

Performances are January 18, 20, and 24 at 8pm. Performances take place at the Liberty Exhibition Hall, 3938 Spring Grove Avenue in Northside.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students/ artists and can be purchased online at

Mariemont Players presents Evelyn in Purgatory a dark comedy by Topher Payne at the Walton Creek Theater, 4101 Walton Creek Road (just East of Mariemont), January 10-26, 2020.

A sort of Breakfast Club for teachers, Evelyn in Purgatory shows what happens when teachers land in their own version of detention. A claim of improper behavior by a failing student lands Evelyn Reid in the New York Public School’s Reassignment Center, one of a series of empty offices in the Department of Education Building. There she encounters a group of teachers who must sit and wait for their cases to be reviewed. Some are guilty, some are not, but all have long since lost any hope of returning to a classroom.  Over the course of the school year, these colleagues form an unlikely alliance, reminding each other of forgotten passions, emerging to face life outside in unexpected new directions. They also learn French, workshop a screenplay…and learn some troubling secrets about each other.

Evelyn in Purgatory is directed by Jennifer Keith, produced by Patrick Kramer Betsy Bossart, and features the talents of Heather AbbottChessie VigranCathy RossAimée WardChuck IngramEvan Blanton, and Robert Weidle.
