THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO Runs Dec. 5-13

TMLT_Last Night of BallyhooHE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO
Presented by Middletown Lyric Theatre
Dec. 5-13
Middletown

Directed by Charley Shafor

Cast: Ken Jaffe as Adolf Freitag, Bette Kooris as Boo Levy, Elizabeth Long as Reba Freitag, Breanna O’Day as Sunny Freitag, Matthew Schnuth as Peachy Weil, Amanda Wilson as Lala Levy & Nathan Greer as Joe Farkas

THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO takes place in Atlanta, Georgia, in December of 1939. Gone with the Wind is having its world premiere, and Hitler is invading Poland, but Atlanta’s elitist German Jews are much more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo, the social event of the season. Especially concerned is the Freitag family. The family gets pulled apart and then mended together with plenty of comedy, romance and revelations along the way. Events take several unexpected turns as the characters face where they come from and are forced to deal with who they really are.

Artie Shaugnessy is a songwriter with visions of glory. Toiling by day as a zoo-keeper, he suffers in seedy lounges by night, plying his wares at piano bars in Queens, New York where he lives with his wife, Bananas, much to the chagrin of Artie’s downstairs mistress, Bunny Flingus, who’ll sleep with him anytime but refuses to cook until they are married. On the day the Pope is making his first visit to the city, Artie’s son Ronny goes AWOL from Fort Dix stowing a home made-bomb intended to blow up the Pope in Yankee Stadium. Also arriving are Artie’s old school chum, now a successful Hollywood producer, Billy Einhorn with starlet girlfriend in tow, who holds the key to Artie’s dreams of getting out of Queens and away from the life he so despises. But like many dreams, this promise of glory evaporates amid the chaos of ordinary lives.

AN O HENRY HOLIDAY – GIFTS OF THE SEASON Runs Nov. 13-23

BVCT_logoAN O HENRY HOLIDAY – GIFTS OF THE SEASON
Presented by Brookville Community Theatre
Nov. 13-23
Brookville

Directed by Sharon Henry

Cast: G. Michael Robinson, Alain Alejandro, Harry Shepard, Joyce Luther, Dimitri Markov, Don Cordes, Kathy DeVorak, Alisea Brown, Stephanie Long, Debbi Robbins, Christie Lamb, Jen Bell, Laura Robbins, Larry Henry, Jim Hocker & Addison Hern

THE GIFT OF THE MAGI is probably one of the most beloved stories for Christmas. It, along with two other tender stories by O. Henry, THE LAST LEAF and the lesser known CHRISTMAS BY INJUNCTION are dramatized here, set in the framework of O. Henry’s life which in itself is a story.

In the early 1900s he was one of the most widely read authors in America. O. Henry, whose real name was William Sydney Porter, was known, however, to have spent some time in jail for allegedly embezzling from an employer, and it is believed that he started writing there in order to support his daughter. Based on these events, the play opens with him jailed on Christmas Eve. Each story he tells — the first to his jailer, the second to his daughter, and the third as he is writing it — comes alive with the actors taking over their character’s lines. As he literally breathes life into them, they maintain the wit, charm and sweetness with which they were written.
