ART Runs Nov. 4-6

oxact_art-logoART
Oxford Area Community Theatre
Nov. 4-6
Oxford Community Arts Center

Directed by S. Michael McVey

Described by Newsweek as sounding “like a marriage of Moliere and Woody Allen,” Art won the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play and the 1996 Olivier Award for Best Comedy. Navigating the complexities of aesthetics, maturity, and evolving friendships, Art concerns three long-time friends, Serge, Marc, and Yvan. Serge, indulging his penchant for modern art, buys a large, expensive, completely white painting. Marc is horrified, and their friendship is challenged as a result of their differing opinions about what constitutes “art.” Yvan, caught in the middle of the conflict, tries to please and mollify them both to preserve the friendship.

Loft Theatre [Dayton]

Directed by Margaret Perry

Plucky novice Mary is causing trouble again, teaching her own unorthodox views on God to the third graders at Saint Aloysius Catholic Elementary School, where she’s hardly a favorite with her conservative Mother Superior. Mary’s aspirations of becoming a nun are in further jeopardy when her childhood sweetheart reappears and declares his love. Will she give up a life of Sisterhood for the man of her dreams? Or will she choose another path and listen to an eccentric priest who proclaims her to be the world’s next savior in this delightful comedy that puts the “fun” in fundamentalism.

Beavercreek Community Theatre
Oct. 28-Nov. 6

Directed by Doug Lloyd

The cult film classic has a new life as a zany musical. The Blands want to open a restaurant, but they need cash. Suppose they lure weirdos to their apartment to kill and rob them? Soon, they are a financial success, but disposing of the bodies is a problem. Enter the devious apartment super, Raoul, with a proposition: he will take care of the corpses for a cut (when he’s not performing at a tacky nightclub). The partnership runs amuck and Mary ultimately bops Raoul with her deadly frying pan. Now the Blands have the money they need and they celebrate with a gourmet meal – guess who’s the main course.
