For the holidays, TCT will treat audiences to a Cinderella Christmas. With plenty of audience participation, side-splitting humor, and outlandish characters, boys will love this classic fairytale set to pop music just as much as girls!

AN EVENING WITH GROUCHO Quick Review

AN EVENING WITH GROUCHO presented Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park through Dec. 17. I attended the opening night performance.

If you never had a chance to see Groucho Marx perform in person, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park is giving you a month of opportunities to see the next best thing: Frank Ferrante.

Once Ferrante dons the iconic greasepaint mustache and eyebrows shortly into the performance, it is easy to forget you are not watching Marx. Personal stories of Groucho and the Marx Brothers are interspersed with classic comedy bits and songs.

Although listed with a run time of 90 minutes, Ferrante’s masterful improvisational skills and quick wit make his interactions with the audience a highlight of the evening – and adds about 30 minutes to the run-time. This, however, is not a complaint. 🙂

With the audience seated on three sides of the stage, there were times when it was hard to hear the dialogue if the actor had his back to your section of the audience. Ferrante could really use a microphone.

AN EVENING WITH GROUCHO is laugh-out-loud funny, with the jokes coming at breakneck speed and expertly delivered with great zeal and respect for the comic legend.

My rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Seen as deluded and dangerous by Macy’s vocational counselor, who plots to have Kris shanghaied to Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Kris ends up in a court competency hearing. A 1940S RADIO CHRISTMAS CAROL Runs Dec. 8-10

BBTC_1940s Radio Christmas Carol logoA 1940S RADIO CHRISTMAS CAROL
Bound Book Theater Company
Dec. 8-10
Mt. Washington United Methodist Church

Directed by Judy Berrens
Music directed by Dennis Andrew Betz
Produced by Cheryl Boettger

Cast: Kent Smith as Clifton Feddington, Gary Hopkins as William St. Claire, Dan Nieman as Charles “Cholly” Butts, Neil Geoppinger as Fritz Canigliaro, Anthony Schaeffer as “Little” Jackie Sparks, Sarah Bizub as Judith Davenport, Shana Mccoy as Margie O’Brien, Laurel Ellis as Sally Simpson, Michael Gunter as Isadore “Buzz” Crenshaw, Dennis Andrew Betz as Toots Navarre, Kelly Geoppinger as Esther Lewis Pirnie & Eddie Zigmann as Harold J. Mullins
Chorus: Erin Zigmann, Terry Dean & Betty Coulter

It’s Christmas Eve, 1943, and the Feddington Players are now broadcasting from a hotel room in Newark, NJ, and set to present their contemporary “take” on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Whether it’s the noisy plumbing, missed cues, electrical blackouts, or the over-the-top theatrics of veteran actor, but radio novice, William St. Claire, this radio show is an entertaining excursion into the mayhem and madness of a live radio show. St. Claire’s escalating foibles and acting missteps propel the show to a simultaneously comedic and heart-wrenching dramatic climax: St. Claire has an on-air breakdown, and begins to connect his own life with that of the classic Dickens tale. In order to “save the show,” the company improvises an ending to Charles Dickens’ classic as a film noir mystery, featuring a hardboiled detective, a femme fatale, and an absurd rescue of Tiny Tim (and the Lindbergh baby) from the clutches of a Hitler-esque villain named Rudolf. Includes dinner which is served one hour prior to curtain.
