Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world-famous singer Tito Merelli, known as Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as the star of the opera. Tito arrives late, and through a hilarious series of mishaps, he is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead – and in a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Merelli’s costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds and lives up to his idol, but Merelli regains consciousness and gets into the identical costume, ready to perform. Now two opera singers are running around in the same costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo.

TWO ON THE AISLE, THREE IN A VAN Runs Feb. 17-26

OXACT_Two on the AisleTWO ON THE AISLE, THREE IN A VAN
Oxford Area Community Theatre
Feb. 17-26
Oxford Community Arts Center

Directed by Kayleigh Swatzell

A hilarious look at theater from the inside out. The show follows a local summer theater troupe through the point of view of the unsung heroes who call the show, run the spotlights, sew the costumes, count the tickets, and suffer through every flubbed line, forgotten prop, and missed cue. In the end, Two on the Aisle, Three in a Van continues to prove the old adage that somehow, some way, the show must go on. And it does—just not always as planned.

Disney’s NEWSIES the Musical Runs Feb. 17-26

KRT_NewsiesDisney’s NEWSIES the Musical
Kincaid Regional Theatre
Feb. 17-26
[Falmouth, Ky.]

It’s time to carry the banner with Disney’s Newsies! Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right!

Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots). Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.

MR. RICKY CALLS A MEETING Runs Feb. 17-19

CBTC_logoMR. RICKY CALLS A MEETING
Cincinnati Black Theatre Company
Feb. 17-19
National Underground Freedom Center [Downtown]

Joe Louis, Paul Robeson, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Jackie Robinson, and Brooklyn Dodgers owner Branch Rickey meet in 1947 to discuss a strategy for dropping a baseball bombshell: promoting a black to the major leagues. That is the premise of this brilliant and timely play. Issues raised include compensation for the possible demise of the Negro leagues and the advisability of one at a time integration. If you want freedom of opportunity, do you play by the white’s rules or do you demand that he play by yours?
