THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF THEATRE, ABRIDGED Runs Feb. 27-March 8

THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF THEATRE, ABRIDGED
Troy Civic Theatre
Feb. 27-March 8

Directed by Mike Maxson

Cast list |

Presented in the same style as The Complete Works of Shakespeare, Abridged, this madcap, nonstop comedy will lead audiences through the history of live theatre, from its beginnings in ancient Greece, to the grand musicals of today. William Shakespeare, theatrical diva Sarah Bernhardt, and the intellectual Constantine Stanislavsky attempt to hold the show together despite the many obstacles they endure – including each other – but when the producer appears onstage, things only get worse when the cast finds out they are trapped in a play within a play. Just as they are nearing the end, the trio learn the playwright hasn’t even written an ending, and they are forced to seek the audience’s help in finding a creative conclusion to the show. This interactive farce will keep you in stitches at every turn!

LES MAMELLES DE TIRESIAS + MAHAGONNY SONGSPIEL
UC College-Conservatory of Music Opera Double Bill
Feb. 26-28
Cohen Family Studio Theater [University Heights]

Directed by Jose Maria Condemi
Conducted by William Langley

The juxtaposition of these two works by contemporaries Francis Poulenc and Kurt Weill highlights two major artistic movements of the first half of the 20th century — surrealism and expressionism. The texts for these compositions are taken from two poet-playwrights, each towering proponents of these styles – Guilliaume Apollinaire of surrealism and Bertolt Brecht of expressionism. Both operas offer sardonic and poignant commentaries on modern society.

You will meet an unruly bunch of bright, funny sixth-form (senior) boys in a British boarding and their vastly different educators. In The History Boys, Alan Bennett raises—with gentle wit and pitch-perfect command of character—not only universal questions about the nature of history and how it is taught but also questions about the purpose of education today.
