AVENUE Q Runs Jan. 24-Feb. 9

AVENUE Q
Dayton Playhouse
Jan. 24-Feb. 9
[Dayton]

Directed by Ray Gambrell

Set in a shabby New York City neighborhood on Avenue Q, the musical follows the journey of Princeton, a recent college graduate, who moves into the area. As he settles into his new apartment, he discovers that the neighborhood is far from ordinary. The residents, both human and puppet characters, face the challenges of adulthood, including finding jobs, navigating relationships, and searching for the meaning and purpose of life. Avenue Q is often praised for its bold and innovative storytelling, as well as its ability to connect with audiences through its relatable themes and catchy musical numbers. While it may be unconventional in its use of puppets and its adult-oriented content, the show has gained a dedicated following and has become a memorable and celebrated part of contemporary musical theater. Rated R.

DIE MOMMIE DIE! Runs Jan. 17-26

DIE MOMMIE DIE!
Beavercreek Community Theatre
Jan. 17-26
[Beavercreek]

DIE MOMMIE DIE! is a comic melodrama evoking the 1960s “Grande Dame Guignol” films that featured aging stars such as Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and Lana Turner. Ex-pop singer Angela Andrews is trapped in a hateful marriage with film producer Sol Sussman. Desperate to find happiness with her younger lover, an out-of-work TV actor named Tony Parker, Angela murders her husband with the aid of a poisoned suppository. In a plot that reflects Greek tragedy as well as Hollywood kitsch, Angela’s Elektra-like daughter Edith convinces Angela’s emotionally disturbed son Lance that they must avenge their father’s death by killing their mother.
